Readers will experience the Civil War & learn of a state's involvement in the Civil War, of which little has been written, but of which there is much to be proud. Unknown to many, no state in the Union Army had a greater involvement than Iowa. From the very first skirmish at Monroe Station, Missouri, through the very last engagement at Horse Creek, Kansas, every major episode of the Civil War that Iowa troops were involved in is covered by using their first-hand accounts from letters, diaries, battle reports & war correspondence to newspapers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaching Atlanta in July of 1864, William Tecumseh Sherman knew he was facing the most important campaign of his career. Lacking the troops and the desire to mount a long siege of the city, Sherman was eager for a quick, decisive victory. A change of tactics was in order. He decided to call on the cavalry. Over the next seven weeks, Sherman's horsemen - under the command of Generals Rousseau, Garrard, Stoneman, McCook, and Kilpatrick - destroyed supplies and tore up miles of railroad track in an attempt to isolate the city. This book tells the story of those raids. After initial successes, the cavalrymen found themselves caught up in a series of daring and deadly engagements, including a failed attempt to push south to liberate the prisoners at the infamous prison camp at Andersonville. Through exhaustive research, David Evans has been able to recreate a vivid, captivating, and meticulously detailed image of the day-by-day life of the Union horse soldier. Based largely upon previously unpublished materials, Sherman's Horsemen provides the definitive account of this hitherto neglected aspect of the American Civil War.

Download or read book Storming Vicksburg written by Earl J. Hess and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most overlooked phase of the Union campaign to capture Vicksburg, Mississippi, was the time period from May 18 to May 25, 1863, when Ulysses S. Grant closed in on the city and attempted to storm its defenses. Federal forces mounted a limited attack on May 19 and failed to break through Confederate lines. After two days of preparation, Grant's forces mounted a much larger assault. Although the Army of the Tennessee had defeated Confederates under John C. Pemberton at Champion Hill on May 16 and Big Black River on May 17, the defenders yet again repelled Grant's May 22 attack. The Gibraltar of the Confederacy would not fall until a six-week siege ended with Confederate surrender on July 4. In Storming Vicksburg, military historian Earl J. Hess reveals how a combination of rugged terrain, poor coordination, and low battlefield morale among Union troops influenced the result of the largest attack mounted by Grant's Army of the Tennessee. Using definitive research in unpublished personal accounts and other underutilized archives, Hess makes clear that events of May 19–22 were crucial to the Vicksburg campaign's outcome and shed important light on Grant's generalship, Confederate defensive strategy, and the experience of common soldiers as an influence on battlefield outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Consists of 54 letters written in 1861 by newspaper correspondent Franc B. Wilkie. Part I, "The Iowa First: Letters From the War," was originally published, under that same title, in 1861. The pamphlet, now exceptionally rare, brought together the reports Wilkie sent back to the Dubuque Herald as he accompanied the First Iowa Infantry from its training camp in Keokuk, Iowa, through to the Battles of Dug Springs and Wilson's Creek, south of Springfield, Missouri (August 2 and 10, 1861). Part II of the book presents for the first time in book form Wilkie's continued correspondence on affairs in Missouri, as it was originally published in the New York Times. While Part I bubbles with the excitement of camp life among the home town boys on their first military expedition, Part II takes a more sedentary and cynical look at military affairs in Missouri under the troubled command of Major General John C. Fr?mont, with occasional forays by Wilkie into the field (Lexington, Shelbina, Springfield, Milford). Series editor Michael E. Banasik again provides extensive annotations, a detailed roster of the First Iowa Infantry, casualty figures for the major military engagements that Wilkie covered, biographies of major participants, and other important background material"--Publisher's website.
