At present, the increasing amount of scientific and technical literature makes it im possible for scientists and technical workers to follow up on all of the new literature related to their fields. In addition, the problems of acquisition, preservation, dissemination and bibliographic access to this literature are acute. Since scientific and technical research forms a large part of the work of the Department of Agriculture, we in agriculture must share in the solution of these problems. The information retrieval Task Force able (agricultural Biological Literature Exploitation) was formed to study these problems and find a solution applicable to the field of agriculture. The task force was urged to consider the application of electronic computers to the storage and retrieval of information. This report is presented with the philosophy that the advent of automation does not change the basic responsibility of any library. Automation 's relationship to libraries is one of means and not purpose. The importance of this new tool is that new services are becoming economically feasible. The main goal is that through automation, the National Agricultural Library may help provide an intellectually stimulating environment for our research scientists as well as all our library users.
