When the operator went aboard on March 3,1986, he immediately attempted to 'turn over' the engine to check the conditions of the batteries and an explosion occurred when he turned the key in the ignition switch. The operator and two other persons aboard at the time suffered flash burns to their heads, hands and arms.There was pollution of the waters when fuel was involuntarily discharged as the vessel sank, but the gasoline was quickly dispersed by the actions of the wind and of the river. The "Tiptoes" was salvaged but was then consideredtobe a constructive total loss.

At 2310, March 24, during final preparations for departure, an explosion occurred in the accommodation which resulted in the death of one crew member and injuries to four other persons.The accommodation and wheel-house were completely destroyed and she sank at her berth becoming a total loss. Her estimated value was $450,000. Pollution as a result of this incident was minimal consistingofslight seepage of diesel fuel oil from the submerged fuel tanks.

Book excerpt: The "Margaret and Robert" was heading for Lurcher Shoal, N.S. from Yarmouth, N.S. to set lobster traps at the onset of a new season. Shortly after clearing Yarmouth Harbour, an initial slight port list increased progressively until water was being shipped over the gunwale. The lobster traps broke free and, although the vessel returned to the upright positon, only the stem and house-top were above water. After losing their liferaft, the crew were successfully rescued from the house-top by the fishing vessel "Leanna" and transported to Yarmouth. The vessel reportedly sank at 0754 November 24, 1986. At the time of sinking there was no apparent pollution and no injuries were sustained. However, 3 weeks later, during confirmation of the position of the vessel, a small slick of fuel oil was observed. The vessel was valued at approximately $55,000.
