I cannot close this report without mention of the disaster that Dr. Curry's death carried to every good and worthy enterprise and more especially to the cause of popular education in his loved Southland. Here in Virginia, as a teacher of young men, he spent many years of his useful career, --a period that he loved to dwell on, --and here he made his home during some years of his ministry of education in the South. Virginia, therefore, claims him as her son, and will ever cherish the memory of his noble life and his patriotic achievements. Dr. Curry's thorough knowledge of the problems of the South, his intimate acquaintance with the leaders of public opinion in this section and in the North, his catholic statesmanship, his courage, and his extraordinary powers of advocating his cause, enabled him, as the agent of the Peabody Fund, to accomplish results that are scarcely paralleled in history. His name is indissolubly associated with all important movements for the betterment of the school system of Virginia. We shall miss his wise counsel, his able championship of our cause, --in short, his masterful guardianship over the educational affairs of the South.
