Book Report of Ice and Ice Movements in the North Atlantic Ocean Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Ice and Ice Movements in the North Atlantic Ocean The subject of ice and ice movements is one to which the Hydrographic Office has given special attention, mainly through its branches at Boston and New York, where reports are regularly received and transmitted to the meteorological division of this Office; here the information is carefully tabulated, and appears on the monthly pilotchart of the North Atlantic Ocean, on which the ice for the previous month is plotted, and a course laid down to clear it. This course, though some 200 miles longer than the shortest possible route (close to Cape Eace), is the most ecomical one that can be followed, not only clearing the ice region, but also avoiding that greatest menace to navigation, fog. At first these precautionary measures were deemed excessive by many captains, but the number is notably decreasing annually, and their wisdom is becoming apparent in the gradual approximation to the pilot-chart routes by the trans-Atlantic steamer lines. As the season advances, the force of the Boston and New York branch offices is greatly occupied in furnishing information on this important subject to captains, for whom, on the eve of sailing, all the latest ice reports are plotted on the charts, and the managers of the steam-ship lines are supplied with copies of all ice reports received. The opening of navigation in the St. Lawrence River and Gulf is an important matter in the New York market, and the subsequent movement of the ice is a subject of great interest to those wishing to charter vessels for that trade. The Office has made every effort to collect the latest and most reliable data concerning the movement of ice in the vicinity of the Grand Banks, and the officer in charge of the Boston branch, in a previous report, states that the marked decrease in the supply of information on the subject was due to the fact of the steamer lines adopting the routes recommended by this Office. It is hardly necessary to dwell upon the importance of the ice problem, or the benefit to be derived from a thorough understanding of it; and, in order that the maritime community might better appreciate the danger, and be aided in intelligently studying the best means of avoiding it, at the request of the Hydrographer, Ensign Hugh Rodman, U.S. Navy of the division of marine meteorology of this Office, was detailed by the bureau, and orders issued by the honorable Secretary of the Navy to proceed to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and St. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Ice Observation and Patrol Service in the North Atlantic Ocean: Season of 1951 The activities of the International Ice Patrol for the 1951 season are presented herein. This bulletin adheres to the same general pattern established in previous years except that the Table of Ice Reports returns to the former practice of listing all ice reports chronologically without regard to whether the particular report was north or south of any particular latitude. Similarly, the monthly digest of ice conditions incorporates all significant ice information in all latitudes. Obstructions other than ice, such as drifting buoys, derelicts, etc., have not been included in the Table of Ice Reports since their significance therein is doubtful. The oceanographic section was prepared by Oceanographer Floyd M. Soule, Lt. P. S. Branson and Lt. (jg) R. P. Dinsmore. Lt. (jg) Sam Pisicchio, U. S. C. G., prepared the sections pertaining to the conduct of the International Ice Patrol. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the International Ice Patrol in the North Atlantic: 2002 Season Comparing the 2001-2002 sea iceand iceberg observations to the historical record emphasizes the departures from normal and gives a greater appreciation for the variability of the ice distribution in the western North Atlantic. For sea ice, Sea Ice Climatic Atlas, East Coast of Canada, 1971-2000 (canadian Ice Service, 2001) provides a 30 year median of ice concentration at seven day intervals for the period from November 26 through July 16. Viekman and Baumer (1995) present an iceberg limits climatology from mid-march to July 30 based on 21 years of Ice Patrol observations from 1975 through 1995. They provide the extreme, median, and minimum extent of the Limit of All Known Ice for the period. Finally, the average number of icebergs estimated to have drifted south of 48°n for each month was calculated using 102 years (1900 through 2001) of HP records. The pre-season sea ice forecast (canadian Ice Service, which was issued in early December, predicted: one week later than normal freeze-up along the Labrador coast and in east Newfoundland waters due to slightly above normal air and sea surface temperatures in the region, movement of the ice edge into the Strait of Belle Isle during the first week of January 2002, sea ice reaching Cape Bonavista during the second week of February, maximum extent of the sea ice attained in mid-march, with the ice edge approximately at the latitude of St. John's for the entire month, and normal retreat of the southern ice edge in the spring. A series of six cis reconnaissance flights conducted in mid-october documented a population of 825 icebergs from 61°n to 66°n, with the highest concentration north of 62°n (desjardins, Although most of the icebergs were near the Baffin Island coast, more than 100 were offshore. Desjardins (2001) predicted that the first of these would reach 48°n during the month of February 2002. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Ice Observation and Ice Patrol Service in the North Atlantic Ocean: Season of 1936 No bergs were reported in the ice-patrol area (i. E. South of 49 N.) during June. Numerous bergs were reported in the Straits of Belle Isle to Cape Norman, and scattered bergs along track G for a distance of 220 miles to the northeast of Belle Isle. The international ice observation was discontinued on June 9, 1936. From June 18 to July 1, however, the United States Coast Guard cutter General Greene, the oceanographic vessel of the Inter national ice-patrol force, made a short oceanographic cruise along the Labrador coast north to South Wolf Island and thence to the southwest coast of Greenland between Cape Farewell and Arsuk Fjord (ivigtut). Ice conditions in these regions were extremely light for any season, but remarkably so for the month of June; no field ice at all along the Labrador coast and only scattered pieces around Cape Farewell. Cape Farewell, which is usually inaccessible due to pack ice and bergs, was easily attained this year. Bergs were less prevalent than normally. (see fig. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drift Ice and Currents of the North Atlantic: With a Chart Showing the Observed Positions of the Ice at Various Times OF the various dangers which beset the path of the mariner, perhaps there are none which excite to more vigilance than the known or expected proximity of ice. In some frequented por tions of the Atlantic Ocean the ice appears almost every year, in the various forms of field ice, oes and massive ice-islands, drift ed from the arctic regions by the constant action of the polar cur rents. These ice-bearing currents, in owing towards the south, must necessarily incline towards the western limits of the owing to the increased velocity of the diurnal rotation of {the earth's surface as we depart from the poles; a law well under stood as regards the currents of air which form the trade winds. Hence it is that on and near the Banks of Newfoundland these ice-currents are found to cross the usual track of vessels bound from the ports of Europe to northern America. The quantity of ice which appears on this route of navigation in different years, is exceedingly various. It is sometimes seen as early in the year as January, and seldom later than the month of August. From March to July is its most common season. It is found most frequently to the west of longitude and to the eastward of longitude 52 but icebergs are sometimes met with as far eastward as longitude and in some rare cases, even still further towards Europe. Experience has shown that the proximity of ice is far less hazardous than rocks and shoals; and this oating danger would be still less formidable were it not for the fogs and mists which it often causes. The thermometer has been often held up as afford ing sure indications of an approach to ice, by the reduction of temperature shown both in the air and water, and these indica tions are important and should by no means be neglected. But there may be many cases of approach to ice where a reliance upon the thermometer alone could not afford security.
