Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of a Board of United States Naval Engineers on the Herreshoff System of Motive Machinery, 1881 Sir: The undersigned, appointed a board by the department's order, of November 5, 1880, to proceed to Bristol, R.I., and there make such trials with the steam-yacht Leila, embodying the latest improvements in the Herreshoff system of motive machinery, as would enable them to give an opinion of its applicability to naval vessels of the Leila's dimensions, and of the advisability of so applying it - reporting the same to the Bureau of Steam Engineering, accompanied by such data and drawings as would enable the department to follow the reasons for the opinions expressed and the recommendations made - have the honor to state that we proceeded as directed, and made a careful study of the system in question, collecting the required data and drawings, and making such experiments as appeared proper to us for a complete elucidation of the qualities of the Herreshoff system of motive machinery. The entire expense of this investigation was borne by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, which furnished the vessel and crew, placing both at our disposal for the purpose of the experiments, and leaving us entirely untrammeled in their conduct, but supplying every facility for making them. The great cost of such trials, which is quite serious for individuals, prevented us from availing ourselves of this liberality any farther than was absolutely necessary for the requisite experimental determinations. We varied the conditions of the machinery as much as possible without resorting to costly alterations or readjustments, and believe our experiments will be found sufficiently exhaustive, not only for the immediate purpose, but also for the solution of some important problems in steam-engineering not hitherto experimentally examined. The steam-yachts of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company have long been celebrated for their high qualities. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinguishing feature of the Herreshoff system of marine steam machinery, is the safety coil boiler, which has been brought to great perfection and patented by the Herreshoff Brothers. The boiler consists of a spiral coil made of iron tube arranged with proper spaces between the coils for the escape of the products of combustion. The coil is made of conical form and surrounds the combustion chamber, presenting an effective heating surface to the fire. The heated gases proceeding from this chamber are made to pass through the spaces of a flat coil at the top, which heats the feed water before its entrance to the boiler proper. The feed water is forced in at the cooler end of the flat coil, through which it passes to the top of the main coil, and descending, is finally discharged into a vertical cylinder, which is called the separator, and in which the steam and water discharged from the coil are divided, the water falling to the bottom, the steam being taken from the top and passed through a super-heating coil located above the main coil, which completely dries and superheats the steam.

This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report Made to the Bureau of Steam-Engineering, Navy Department, March 3, 1883 Sir : The Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, of Bristol, R. I., having kindly placed at my disposal, for the purpose of making a limited number of experiments, the steam-yacht Siesta, just built by them for Mr. Hulbert H. Warner, of Rochester, N. Y., I accepted the offer and was able to satisfactorily complete the trials that form the subject of this report, which is respectfully submitted for the information of the Bureau. I regret I had not the assistance of a board of naval engineers, and that the trials could not be longer in their duration and more varied in their conditions. The limit of time was fixed by the fact that the vessel had to be delivered to her proprietor as soon as completed; and the want of the assistance of a board of naval engineers was supplied as far as possible by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company assigning me a sufficient number of the best qualified persons in their employ for the purpose. During the experiments the carpenters were on board finishing the joiner work, but in all other respects the hull and machinery were in proper condition for trial. The duration of each experiment was confined to the shortest time in which reliable results could be secured, with the view of making as many experiments under different conditions as possible, and it is believed no better distribution of the limited time could be effected. Of course the entire, and by no means inconsiderable, expense was borne by the Messrs. Herreshoff, who showed in this their well-known liberality and their desire for the improvement of steam machinery. To them, therefore, the reader is indebted for the very valuable and interesting facts which these trials have established. Among them the entirely novel one of the great influence exercised on the economy of the compound engine by the more or less short cutting off of the steam in the large cylinder. Certainly, the variation of the cut-off of the large cylinder, that of the small cylinder remaining constant, does not theoretically affect the measure of expansion with which the steam is used, but it so affects the distribution of the steam in the two cylinders as to cause a very important difference in the economic result. This fact was first pointed out by me in a report on the Herreshoff system of motive machinery as applied to the steam-yacht Leila, made to the Bureau of Steam-Engineering on June 3, 1881, and it receives in these experiments with the motive machinery of the Siesta the strongest confirmation.
