Book Repairing Bridge Substructures

Download or read book Repairing Bridge Substructures written by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road and bridge networks in OECD countries are ageing and substantial funds are needed for repair and rehabilitation. Underwater or underground damage to bridge substructures is often invisible, inaccessible, and hard to assess. A variety of measures and technologies for bridge substructures has proven practically effective despite difficult geological and environmental conditions. This report catalogs actual damage and defects of bridge substructures and provides several examples of inspection, repair, and strengthening technologies. It proposes measures to protect investment capital while insuring low operational costs. It is a resource book for policy makers and administrators responsible for bridge management. Book Advanced Composites in Bridge Construction and Repair

Download or read book Advanced Composites in Bridge Construction and Repair written by Yail Jimmy Kim and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced composite materials for bridge structures are recognized as a promising alternative to conventional construction materials such as steel. After an introductory overview and an assessment of the characteristics of bonds between composites and quasi-brittle structures, Advanced Composites in Bridge Construction and Repair reviews the use of advanced composites in the design and construction of bridges, including damage identification and the use of large rupture strain fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. The second part of the book presents key applications of FRP composites in bridge construction and repair, including the use of all-composite superstructures for accelerated bridge construction, engineered cementitious composites for bridge decks, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites for cable-stayed bridges and for repair of deteriorated bridge substructures, and finally the use of FRP composites in the sustainable replacement of ageing bridge superstructures. Advanced Composites in Bridge Construction and Repair is a technical guide for engineering professionals requiring an understanding of the use of composite materials in bridge construction. Reviews key applications of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in bridge construction and repair Summarizes key recent research in the suitability of advanced composite materials for bridge structures as an alternative to conventional construction materials

Book Bridge Evaluation Repair and Rehabilitation

Download or read book Bridge Evaluation Repair and Rehabilitation written by A.S. Nowak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation, repair and rehabilitation of bridges are increasingly important topics in the effort to deal with the deteriorating infrastructure. For example, in the United States about 40 percent of the nation's 570,000 bridges are classified, according to the Federal Highway Administra tion's (FHW A) criteria, as deficient and in need of rehabilitation and replacement. In other countries the situation is similar. FHW A estimates the cost of a bridge replacement and reha bilitation program at 50 billion dollars. The major factors that have contributed to the present situation are: the age, inadequate maintenance, increasing load spectra and environmental contamination. The deficient bridges are posted, repaired or replaced. The disposition of bridges involves clear economical and safety implications. To avoid high costs of replacement or repair, the evaluation must accurately reveal the present load carrying capacity of the struc ture and predict loads and any further changes in the capacity (deterioration) in the applicable time span. Accuracy of bridge evaluation can be improved by using the recent developments in bridge diagnostics, structural tests, material tests, structural analysis and probabilistic methods. There is a need for an international exchange of advanced experience to increase the research effi ciency. The Workshop is organized on the premise that the exchange of existing American and European experience in the area of bridge evaluation, repair and rehabilitation is beneficial for both parties involved.

Book Underwater Bridge Maintenance and Repair

Download or read book Underwater Bridge Maintenance and Repair written by Ronald L. Purvis and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis on underwater bridge maintenance and repair will be of special interest to bridge maintenance engineers and others involved with repair of bridge elements located below the waterline and in the splash zone. Procedures for correctly assessing the problem and engineering the repair within the constraints of individual situations, including bridge scour considerations, are described. Protection, maintenance, and repair of concrete, masonry, steel, and timber bridge foundation elements are also addressed. This synthesis updates the maintenance and repair portion of NCHRP Synthesis 88: Underwater Inspection and Repair of Bridge Substructures. This report of the Transportation Research Board identifies and describes current practices and innovative repair techniques for problems associated with settlement, scour, and deterioration of underwater bridge elements. The synthesis considers various types of protection, maintenance, and repair work on bridge substructures, both underwater and in the splash zone, and includes techniques, and their effectiveness. Current research in the topic area and critical research needs are also identified. A limited bibliography is also provided.
