Download or read book Renovation Nation written by Fiona R. Allon and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is an intelligent, savvy account of home in all its manifestations. It's about our fetish for home and ownership. Why are Australians so obsessed with interest rates, home ownership, home beautification, investment properties, real estate? Fiona Allon looks at our own homes--why we renovate, why shows like The Block were so incredibly popular, why housing affordability has become one of the key political and social issues--and finds that we have become more inward looking than ever. She also looks at the national 'home', and at why we became so anxious about keeping some people out of the country, or away from places some thought they owned, like Cronulla Beach." -- Provided by publisher.
Download or read book Enacting a Public Theology written by Clive Pearson and published by AFRICAN SUN MeDIA. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of a public theology is to identify issues that require attention for the sake of a civil society and the flourishing of all. In diverse ways the writers of Enacting a Public Theology recognise that the present is a volatile moment in time. The publication explores the loss of confidence in the contemporary expressions of democracy; the climate emergency accompanies the dawn of the Anthropocene; the migration of people raises concerns to do with identity, belonging and where is home; the invasion of land wrongly described as terra nullius and then invaded demands a deepened praxis of reconciliation between first and second peoples; and lastly there is an urgent need to speak into the situation of those pushed to the margins because of HIV/Aids. Enacting a Public Theology represents the thinking of writers from Australia and Aotearoa-New Zealand. It is both local and global in its concern. Each one of the contributors participated in the triennial gathering of the Global Network of Public Theology held in Stellenbosch in 2016.
Download or read book Material Geographies of Household Sustainability written by Andrew Gorman-Murray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charting new research directions, this book constructs a series of imperatives for linking culturally informed research around household sustainability with policy and planning. The household, or 'home', is a critical scale for understanding activities that connect individual behaviours and societal attitudes. The focus on the household in this collection provides a window into the sheer diversity of homemaking and maintenance activities that entail resource use. These practices have affective or emotive dimensions as well as habitual aspects. Diversity, innovation and change at the household scale is often missed in policy approaches which assume that simplistic economic motivations drive demand and this can in turn be 'managed' through regulation or market pricing. The research challenge extends beyond describing existing unsustainable economies driving resource intensive behaviour to consider realistic options for transformations in cultural practices, material relationships and, ultimately, the political economies they sit within. Without change in these systems, government initiatives to promote ecological modernisation run the risk of simply green-washing the very economies of consumption that currently drive unsustainable practices. Social and cultural change at the household level is critical to promoting sustainability at a range of wider scales.

Download or read book Transnational England written by Monika Class and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of the modern English nation coincided with England’s increased encounters with other peoples, both at home and abroad. Their cultures and ideas—artistic, religious, political, and philosophical—contributed, in turn, to the composition of England’s own domestic identity. Transnational England sheds light on this exchange through a close investigation of the literatures of the time, from dramas to novels, travel narratives to religious hymns, and poetry to prose, all of which reveal how connections between England and other world communities 1780-1860 simultaneously fostered and challenged the sovereignty of the English nation and the ideological boundaries that constituted it. Featuring essays from distinguished and emergent scholars that will enhance the literary, historical, and cultural knowledge of England's interaction with European, American, Eastern, and Asian nations during a time of increased travel and vast imperial expansion, this volume is valuable reading for academics and students alike.
Download or read book War and National Reinvention written by Frederick R. Dickinson and published by Harvard Univ Asia Center. This book was released on 1999 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Japan, as one of the victorious allies, World War I meant territorial gains in China and the Pacific. At the end of the war, however, Japan discovered that in modeling itself on imperial Germany since the nineteenth century, it had perhaps been imitating the wrong national example. Japanese policy debates during World War I, particularly the clash between proponents of greater democratization and those who argued for military expansion, thus became part of the ongoing discussion of national identity among Japanese elites. This study links two sets of concerns--the focus of recent studies of the nation on language, culture, education, and race; and the emphasis of diplomatic history on international developments--to show how political, diplomatic, and cultural concerns work together to shape national identity.
