Download or read book The End of the Road written by John Barth and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As young Jake Horner’s mind became an increasingly paralyzing cobweb of dark thoughts, he turned for help to an extraordinary doctor—part saint, part evil-genius, a weird combination of faith healer, magician, and devil. And in so doing Jake found himself following a drastic prescription that was to draw him into a strange, compulsive relationship. It is around the startling results of Jake Horner’s “cure” and its amazing mastermind—a doctor almost surely designed to become one of the most remarkable characters in modern fiction—that this brilliant, imaginative novel hinges. John Barth is a young writer of unusual talent whose uncanny insight into the dark mazes of the human mind has given The End of the Road a haunting and troubling reality.

Download or read book Rennie s Way written by Verna Mae Slone and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An intriguing mix of family history, lore, mountain culture, and folkways, skillfully bound together with an all-but-transparent thread of fiction.” —Library Journal When Rennie Slone’s mother dies in childbirth, the twelve-year-old girl is unexpectedly thrust into adulthood. She must keep house for her father, an itinerant preacher who finds little time for family, and raise her newborn sister—a task that becomes Rennie’s lifelong passion. Against all odds, she is determined that Sarah Ellen will have the education she herself has had to give up. This first work of fiction by Verna Mae Slone, firmly grounded in her own background, is set in the 1920s and 1930s in a closeknit community in eastern Kentucky, where family roots run deep. At its center stands as strong and resilient a heroine as any in American literature. The story of Rennie’s struggles and Sarah Ellen’s growth into womanhood form a richly textured picture of the simple, sturdy mountain people—their labor to wrest a living from the land, their neighborly care for one another, their shared joys, their quarrels with the outside world, and their distinctive dialect. We see the people of Lonesome Holler raising and preserving food, gathering for bean stringings, molasses stir-offs, play parties, and pie socials, pitching in to clear a neighbor’s land, assisting at a difficult birth, and helping to bury the dead. Verna Mae Slone, a native of Knott County, Kentucky, is the author of several books, including the bestselling memoir, What My Heart Wants to Tell. “Slone’s style, which includes dialogue written in dialect, is lively. Readers drawn to regional tales will enjoy learning about Lonesome Holler.” —Publishers Weekly

Download or read book Imagined Human Beings written by Bernard Jay Paris and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1997-10-01 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of literature's greatest gifts is its portrayal of realistically drawn characters--human beings in whom we can recognize motivations and emotions. In Imagined Human Beings, Bernard J. Paris explores the inner conflicts of some of literature's most famous characters, using Karen Horney's psychoanalytic theories to understand the behavior of these characters as we would the behavior of real people. When realistically drawn characters are understood in psychological terms, they tend to escape their roles in the plot and thus subvert the view of them advanced by the author. A Horneyan approach both alerts us to conflicts between plot and characterization, rhetoric and mimesis, and helps us understand the forces in the author's personalty that generate them. The Horneyan model can make sense of thematic inconsistencies by seeing them as the product of the author's inner divisions. Paris uses this approach to explore a wide range of texts, including Antigone, "The Clerk's Tale," The Merchant of Venice, A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Wuthering Heights, Madame Bovary, The Awakening, and The End of the Road.

Book excerpt: This sweeping story chronicles one young man’s experience with family and fighting during the Civil War. Drew Rennie is a rebel in more ways than one. Since childhood, he has defied the stern, unforgiving grandfather who reared him and who made no secret of his hatred for Drew’s Texan father. And when the Civil War began, Grandfather’s sympathies with the North, the smoldering feud erupted into a violent quarrel. Now, eighteen-year-old Drew has returned to Kentucky with Morgan’s Raiders, a seasoned veteran with two years of experience fighting for the South. And even though Morgan’s disastrous defeat at Cynthiana clearly reflects the Confederacy’s growing weakness, it never occurs to Drew, his spur-jingling friend Anse Kirby, or young Boyd Barrett to stop fighting. In disorder, without adequate supplies and weapons, and harried by Union soldiers, they battle their way south to join Forrest’s army. Ride Proud, Rebel! is the dramatic story of the long, agonizing retreat of the Army of the Tennessee from Harrisburg, Mississippi, where Boyd was wounded, to the rout of Selma and final surrender. Based on unpublished sources and written by a master storyteller, Drew’s adventures as a scout for Forrest during the last year of the Confederacy make not only a gripping tale but also graphically portray the courage and strength of men who met defeat with honor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Floating Opera and The End Of The Road are John Barth's first two novels. Their relationship to each other is evident not only in their ribald subject matter but in the eccentric characters and bitterly humorous tone of the narratives. Both concern strange, consuming love triangles and the destructive effect of an overactive intellect on the emotions. Separately they give two very different views of a universal human drama. Together they illustrate the beginnings of an illustrious career.
