Elle vise à déterminer si, et de quelle façon, les interactions sociales qui ont lieu au sein d’une communauté médiée par des technologies peuvent amoindrir les difficultés associées à la distance pédagogique et ainsi favoriser l’apprentissage du processus de recherche universitaire. Le cadre de référence de cette étude est constitué de deux concepts essentiels : la distance dans un contexte de formation (Jacquinot, 1993; Moore, 1993; Moore et Kearsley, 2011) et la présence (Jézégou, 2010b, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2019; Shin, 2002). À partir de ces concepts nous avons élaboré un cadre d’analyse que nous avons nommé « présence transactionnelle globale dans une communauté de cycle supérieur ». Cette étude vise à documenter un portrait global et émergeant de ces éléments dans un contexte peu étudié, soit celui de la formation à la recherche dans le deuxième cycle universitaire. Située dans une perspective à la fois interprétative et compréhensive avec une portée exploratoire, mais aussi descriptive et explicative, cette recherche repose sur une étude de cas menée au sein d’une communauté de recherche et d’entraide dans une université francophone d’Amérique du Nord. Cette communauté a pour but le développement des compétences scientifiques chez les étudiants gradués, le soutien à leurs travaux de recherche ainsi que leur intégration progressive aux milieux professionnels. Les données étudiées proviennent principalement d’entrevues semi-structurées réalisées auprès de 15 étudiants et de quatre membres du corps professoral faisant partie de la communauté, mais aussi d’observations des activités menées dans le cadre de rencontres en mode synchrone (présentiel ou en ligne) et des discussions ayant lieu dans des forums thématiques asynchrones. Une méthode d’analyse mixte de contenu a été utilisée incluant la quantification des cooccurrences des thèmes et l’analyse interprétative du discours des participants. L’étude montre que, dans un contexte de formation à la recherche dans le deuxième cycle universitaire, les interactions au sein de la communauté favorisent une augmentation de la présence transactionnelle et, ce faisant renforcent le sentiment de proximité et de disponibilité des autres membres de la communauté. L’étude met en lumière l’importance de l’interaction avec les pairs pour soutenir la formation des étudiants-chercheurs, et ce, à plusieurs dimensions : apprentissage du processus de recherche universitaire, enculturation scientifique, socialisation, aspects psychologiques et besoin de conseils et d’orientation. Elle dégage huit pratiques pédagogiques fructueuses pouvant contribuer au développement des compétences scientifiques chez les étudiants-chercheurs : les cliniques de recherche, les présentations de fin d’étape, les formations, les ateliers de rédaction, les symposiums fermés, les forums, les débats et le club de lecture. Enfin, elle cerne neuf conditions favorables au succès d’une communauté d’apprentissage médiée par des technologies pour la formation à la recherche dans les cycles supérieurs : l’adhésion à l’approche socio-constructiviste, le partage de la responsabilité entre les professeurs et les étudiants, la définition d’un périmètre disciplinaire, la planification des activités en considération à la fois des étudiants en présence et à distance, l’équilibre entre encadrement individuel et collectif, la mise en place d’une structure qui favorise la participation (fréquence et durée des activités), le développement des habiletés pour donner des rétroactions critiques et constructives, la construction d’une base de connaissances commune et la promotion de la notoriété des actions de la communauté.
