Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since it was first published in 1982 The American Community College has become the primary resource that faculty, administrators, trustees, and researchers look to for a comprehensive analysis of the most recent findings and up-to-date information on the American community college. Throughout this important book, Arthur M. Cohen and Florence B. Brawer describe how community colleges fit into the American educational system, the services they provide, and the effects they have on the community. This completely revised and updated edition contains information about recent changes in the community college landscape, including consolidation of faculty power, mandatory testing and placement of students, the greater prominence of developmental education, and the attention given to state-level directives regarding institutional functioning and funding. The authors also present the current information on a number of other topics, including student flow, instruction, student services, and curricular functions. In addition, The American Community College includes updated tables and graphs that reflect the most current data and incorporate new examples of the services that colleges provide. The American Community College is a comprehensive book that will be useful to anyone concerned with the role and purpose of two-year institutions in American higher education. The descriptions and analyses of each of the institution's functions can be used by administrators who want to learn about practices that have proven successful at other colleges, curriculum planners involved in program revisions, faculty members seeking ideas for modifying their courses, trustees and officials concerned with college policies regarding curriculum and student services, and graduate students preparing for careers in these institutions.

Book Restoring the American Dream

Download or read book Restoring the American Dream written by Richard D. Kahlenberg and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, where social mobility has been considered a birthright, community colleges are essential to that promise. But America's one thousand community colleges, which educate nine million students, often fall short of their potential. The lion's share of the blame lies with policies that systematically shortchange community colleges financially, asking twoyear institutions to educate those students who tend to have the greatest needs, using the fewest financial resources. What can be done? With the support of the William T. Grant Foundation, a twentyonemember Century Foundation Working Group analyzed the problem over a twoyear period, and now offer a bold set of recommendations. Among them, the group calls for the creation of a new body of research that will establish, for the first time, what it costs to provide a strong community college education. Such studies, which are commonplace at the K-12 level, could provide guidance to policymakers on the amount of money to invest in community colleges, and could provide support to community college leaders on where best to invest. Much better research could greatly improve decisionmaking, the Working Group suggests, substantially boosting the life chances of community college students, and jumpstarting social mobility in America. This volume includes the report of the Working Group, along with three background papers: Bruce Baker and Jesse Levin, "Estimating the Real Cost of Community College" Anthony P. Carnevale, Artem Gulish, and Jeff Strohl, "Educational Adequacy in the TwentyFirst Century" Richard D. Kahlenberg, Robert S. Shireman, Kimberly Quick, and Tariq Habash, "Policy Strategies for Pursuing Adequate Funding of Community Colleges"

Book excerpt: The only overview of research on the uniquely American community college system, which is increasingly becoming the site of entry for students seeking a higher education. This new volume shows why America's community colleges increasingly find themselves at the epicenter of social conflict, surrounded by unresolved questions such as: In a country based on the notion of equal opportunity, shouldn't all high school graduates have access to higher education? Are access and excellence really compatible? What is the real work of community colleges? Is it to provide transfer programs for students going on to baccalaureate colleges or training workers for careers in business and industry? In this comprehensive guide, readers will find not only a solid grounding in the latest research on these difficult questions but also a thoughtful analysis of the social forces that gave rise to American community colleges and still shape them today.
