Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broadside playbill for Byron's Marino Faliero; also advertises: J. Parry's High notions; Mystification, an afterpiece in two acts; I. Bickerstaff's Love in a village; and The kind imposter, an operatic drama founded on Colley Cibber's She would and she would not. Broadside occupies the left side of the sheet, on the right side is printed a letter from the Theatre Royal to the audience regarding the performance of Marino Faliero, dated April 30, 1821. The same letter (sometimes with a different date) was used to accompany playbills for other performances of Marino Faliero. Today sometimes found separated, the letter and the playbill were apparently originally issued as a unified whole (see European Magazine, May 1821, page 452). The letter is probably by Robert William Elliston, the manager of the theatre.

Book excerpt: Although known primarily for his poetry, Lord Byron (1788-1824) also had a keen interest in the theatre and wrote a number of verse dramas, mostly during his Italian exile. While these plays went largely unnoticed during Byron's lifetime, they have since been recognized by critics for their sublime poetic and dramatic qualities. This collection brings together six of Byron's finest plays: Manfred, Cain, Heaven and Earth, Marino Faliero, Sardanapalus, and The Two Foscari.
