Book Evaluation of Trenchless Renewal Methods for Potable Water Distribution Pipes

Download or read book Evaluation of Trenchless Renewal Methods for Potable Water Distribution Pipes written by Abhay A. Jain and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undoubtedly, potable water pipes, as part of an underground infrastructure system, play a key role in maintaining quality of life, health and well being of human kind. As these potable water pipes reach the end of their useful life, they create high maintenance costs, loss of flow capacity, decreased water quality, and increased dissatisfaction. Trenchless renewal methods (TRMs) are a medium to renew deteriorated potable water pipes, thus decreasing leakage loss, emergency maintenance costs and customer complaints. TRMs also maintain the quality of the water leaving the treatment plant. America's drinking water systems faces an annual shortfall of at least $11 Billion to replace the aging facilities that are near the end of their useful lives and to comply with existing and future federal water regulations (ASCE, 2009). Due to applicability, capabilities and limitations of specific trenchless renewal methods, it is sometimes difficult to select an appropriate method for a particular pipe conditions and based on the project surface and subsurface characteristics. To assist with solving this problem, this research presents a comparison of trenchless renewal methods as well as a decision support system and a cost module to select a suitable trenchless renewal method based on the particular pipe problems and field characteristics.

Book Testing of Innovative Pipe Renewal Liners for Renovation of Potable Water Distribution Pipelines

Download or read book Testing of Innovative Pipe Renewal Liners for Renovation of Potable Water Distribution Pipelines written by Olukayode Awe and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trenchless renovation has been in operation since the 1970's in North America and the United Kingdom. However, it has not been widely accepted due to cost effectiveness concerns. Many Canadian cities are faced with the problem of aging and deteriorating water distribution network due to one or a combination of pipe breaks, leakages, or aesthetic water quality problems, resulting from aging and internal corrosion. Various polymer-based products such as Cured-in Place Pipe (CIPP) lining have been widely employed in structural water main rehabilitation applications. On the other hand, only a few technologies deal with non-structural systems, usually meant to serve as barrier coatings thereby protecting the iron water mains. This thesis presents the results of a laboratory testing program designed to investigate the renewal of potable water mains via the use of polyurea and epoxy-polyurethane lining in two separate locations in Ontario. The effectiveness of using these polymeric linings are investigated, available and new cleaning technologies are discussed, and thereafter properties of the tested liner material are verified. There are two primary objectives for this research. They include 1) evaluation of the lining products, which are installed using new technologies, and 2) development of testing protocol to address construction Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) concerns for the new technologies. Employing a spray-on liner in trenchless technology applications provide several challenges including unknown pipe life, unknown corrosion rate in pipes, and pipe-liner material interaction (in form of bond). This research incorporated some trial sites to gather field data related to the primary objectives described above. The trial site is located at the 3M Oxford street facility, located in London, Canada. The field installation of liners into pipe sections are put into practical demonstration and samples are tested for as per quality control. Finally, it is concluded that using an effective pipe cleaning method eradicates lining faults and improves adhesion to the host pipe. Also, a strategic QA/QC test protocol is developed.

Book An Investigation of Water Pipeline Renewal Practices

Download or read book An Investigation of Water Pipeline Renewal Practices written by Abbas Abed Salman and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, the use of trenchless technologies is gradually increasing due to the growing need to replace and renew aging utility infrastructure and the need for more flexible solutions for the installation of new pipes. In the United States of America, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2017 assessed that America's infrastructure is close to failing. It faces an annual shortfall of at least $11 billion to replace the aging facilities that are near the end of their useful lives. In this research, surveys and interviews of professionals working in trenchless technologies for the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT) No-Dig Show in California were carried out and the results were analyzed. The surveys focused on the structural lining system classification, the required data to design water pipe rehabilitation method, the most recent growth in trenchless technologies for water main rehabilitation methods, and the safety of renewal methods. Another interview and residential survey was conducted to calculate the social cost of the open cut method. The surveys focused on major hindrances, traffic disruption, property damage, and safety requirements. Survey results indicate that the cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) method will be the method of choice compared with other pipe replacement and renewal methods.

Book Renewal of Potable Water Systems Using Cement Mortar Lining

Download or read book Renewal of Potable Water Systems Using Cement Mortar Lining written by Keith Bertrand Moggach and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Canadian cities are faced with the problem of an aging and deteriorating iron water distribution network - pipe breaks, leakage, and/or aesthetic water quality problems. Public confidence in municipalities' ability to deliver safe, clean drinking water to customers has been eroded, especially in areas of water distribution networks receiving coloured water events that result from the internal corrosion of aging iron watermains. Cement mortar lining is one of the most widely used non-structural watermain rehabilitation methods for the prevention of coloured water events due to internal iron pipe corrosion; however, it is also thought/claimed to be a means of controlling corrosion pin-hole leakage. This thesis presents the results of a laboratory testing program designed to investigate the renewal of potable watermains via the use of cement mortar lining. The specific focus of this thesis is the ability of the cement mortar lining to bridge corrosion pin-holes and prevent water loss from the watermain, and the effects of mortar application on the corrosion protection provided to the iron watermain by cement mortar lining.

Book Prioritizing Water Pipe Replacement and Rehabilitation by Evaluating Failure Risk

Download or read book Prioritizing Water Pipe Replacement and Rehabilitation by Evaluating Failure Risk written by Sang Hyun Lee and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential to human life is water. Drinking water, in particular, is of utmost significance for all living creatures including man. An examination of the transmission process of drinking water reveals the high importance of pipe lines. The water pipe lines delivering water today encounter serious problems. Corrosion has caused deterioration in pipe lines, which contributes rust to drinking, a serious water quality problem. In addition, pipe line failures have caused social issues, such as suspension of water supply. This study developed a model to estimate the life expectancy and residual life of a pipe based on the assessment of failure risk in order to evaluate the current failure possibility and predict when the pipe will reach the point of failure. The developed model for estimation of residual life by failure risk was used to assess the failure risk of water pipes based on the general data and pipe sources of the Chang Won City water pipes. The efforts to diagnose and evaluate water pipes are limited to the assessment of current pipe conditions, which is why they can easily determine the priority of rehabilitation based on the current pipe conditions but have hard time getting information about how the pipes have deteriorated to the point of requiring rehabilitation. The objectives of this study are: (1) develop a model for estimating corrosion rates and residual thickness of water pipes, (2) assess loads and stress affecting water pipes, (3) to estimate damage risk, and (4) calculate safety factors. Results of the study could help reduce rehabilitation costs and secure water quality after renovation. Thus it would contribute to the safe and stable operation and management of pipe networks by increasing the life of water pipes.

Book Testing and Design Life Analysis of Polyurea Liner Materials

Download or read book Testing and Design Life Analysis of Polyurea Liner Materials written by Siavash Ghasemi-Motlagh and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Certainly, water pipes, as part of an underground infrastructure system, play a key role in maintaining quality of life, health, and wellbeing of human kind. As these potable water pipes reach the end of their useful life, they create high maintenance costs, loss of flow capacity, decreased water quality, and increased dissatisfaction. There are several different pipeline renewal techniques available for different applications, among which linings are most commonly used for the renewal of water pipes. Polyurea is a lining material applied to the interior surface of the deteriorated host pipe using spray-on technique. It is applied to structurally enhance the host pipe and provide a barrier coating against further corrosion or deterioration. The purpose of this study was to establish a relationship between stress, strain and time. The results obtained from these tests were used in predicting the strength of the polyurea material during its planned 50-year design life. In addition to this, based on the 10,000 hours experimental data, curve fitting and Findley power law models were employed to predict long-term behavior of the material. Experimental results indicated that the tested polyurea material offers a good balance of strength and stiffness and can be utilized in structural enhancement applications of potable water pipes.
