Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: B, University of Ibadan (Centre for Petroleum Energy Economics and Law), course: Environmental Law and Policy I, language: English, abstract: Access to energy in the form of electricity undoubtedly plays an important role in nation’s growth, economic development, healthcare delivery, addressing energy poverty, supporting urbanization, delivering competitive energy to developing and developed countries alike and generally human well-being. There are different sources of electricity; and generation of electricity from them equally affect human well– being and the environment. Some of the notable sources of electricity or energy are: solar, fossil fuels, biogas, solid biomass, nuclear, hydropower. This work attempts to examine the environmental safety of coal use vis-a -vis power provision in Nigeria. Coal is a fossil fuel formed from decomposition of organic materials subjected to geological heat and pressure for millions of years. It is considered a non– renewable energy source because it cannot be replenished within human time frame. Coal is a combustible black or brownish – black sedimentary rock normally occurring in rock strata in layers or vein called coal beds or coal steams. The United States Energy Information Administration highlighting the importance and cheaper cost of coal in energy mix states that global consumption is likely to increase by 48%from 6 .7 million metric tons to an estimated 9. 98 billion short tons by 2030. Coal as an energy source contributes about 30% of the United States of America electricity generation, 93% of South Africa electricity generation, and 79% of the People’s Republic of China electricity generation. Going by this statistics and the fact that coal is cheap source for electricity generation, it is safe to assert that Nigeria has the potentials to produce cheaper electricity to solve its dearth of electricity generation and supply using coal. As such, the book will help policy makers devise energy and sustainable strategies to achieve low carbon development in Nigeria.

Book Qualitative Comparative Analysis QCA

Download or read book Qualitative Comparative Analysis QCA written by Jenniver Sehring and published by CIFOR. This book was released on with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This working paper gives an overview of Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), a method that enables systematic cross-case comparison of an intermediate number of case studies. It presents an overview of QCA and detailed descriptions of different versions of the method. Based on the experience applying QCA to CIFOR’s Global Comparative Study on REDD+, the paper shows how QCA can help produce parsimonious and stringent research results from a multitude of in-depth case studies developed by numerous researchers. QCA can be used as a structuring tool that allows researchers to share understanding and produce coherent data, as well as a tool for making inferences usable for policy advice. REDD+ is still a young policy domain, and it is a very dynamic one. Currently, the benefits of QCA result mainly from the fact that it helps researchers to organize the evidence generated. However, with further and more differentiated case knowledge, and more countries achieving desired outcomes, QCA has the potential to deliver robust analysis that allows the provision of information, guidance and recommendations to ensure carbon-effective, cost-efficient and equitable REDD+ policy design and implementation

Book Energy Resources in Africa

Download or read book Energy Resources in Africa written by Herick Othieno and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides information on the distribution of the available energy resources throughout the continent and how it is linked to the development of individual states. Africa is considered one of the poorest continents in the world, mainly because its development has historically depended on imported resources including technical expertise. This view and its associated resource management strategy are based on the perception that Africa lacks sufficient energy resources to drive its development agenda. Analyses of individual countries’ energy potentials, exploitation levels and distribution mechanisms are provided with a view to identifying additional factors that are stifling Africa’s economic development. One critical factor is the relationship between available energy resources and the energy mixes chosen by different states, and how these can be exploited to produce the right blend of energy for various applications such as industrial, transport, domestic, and recreational uses. The authors provide an in-depth analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of different energy sources in terms of their environmental, industrialization and distribution costs, impacts, and the development options best suited for improving Africa’s economic situation. This analysis is based on the assertion that Africa is indeed blessed with abundant energy resources, which have not been effectively exploited. The book not only reviews Africa’s energy situation in general, but also reveals that, while there are certainly circumstances peculiar to individual countries, the similarities, especially within Sub-Saharan African countries, outweigh the differences. That being said, the challenges and available opportunities in each country should be viewed with due consideration given to the prevailing national resource management environment. Many initiatives in Africa fail because of the many loopholes in the management structures, which allow corruption, theft, and mere selfishness to thrive. In addition to the negative impacts of these factors on implementation activities, there is also a general lack of institutional support for initiatives that could otherwise be very progressive. Thus, taken together, these retrogressive practices stifle African energy development plans. The book offers a valuable guide for developers, investors, researchers and environmentalist, providing in-depth insights on the relationship between available energy resources and development trends in Africa. "By harnessing the wind and sun, your vast geothermal energy and rivers for hydropower, you can turn this climate threat into an economic opportunity." US President Obama's address to the African Union (2015)

Book Analysis on the Impact of Energy Consumption and Green Growth in Nigeria

Download or read book Analysis on the Impact of Energy Consumption and Green Growth in Nigeria written by Basiru Haliru and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to clean and modern energy constitutes a colossal challenge confronting not only Nigeria but also Africa as a whole. This is due to the fact that energy is an indispensable requirement for the socio-economic development of any nation. The primary aim of this research is to evaluate the impact of energy consumption on green growth in Nigeria, with a focus on renewable energy. To achieve this objective, time series data spanning over four decades (1980-2021) were collected from both domestic and foreign reputable organizations, including the World Bank's World Development Indicators (WDI), the International Energy Administration portal, and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) through its annual statistical bulletin. The study adopted the Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) to investigate the influence of energy consumption and selected variables such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Openness (OPN), and Carbon Tax (C02 tax) on Green Growth in Nigeria. The findings from this research revealed that green growth has a statistically significant positive relationship with its first lag and current value at a 1% level of significance. Furthermore, it was discovered that there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between electricity (energy) consumption and green growth in Nigeria. However, the results indicated a negative and statistically insignificant relationship between foreign direct investment and green growth. Based on these results, it is highly recommended that the Nigerian government pays more attention to the development of renewable energy sources. This variable is crucial in determining green growth and is essential for the progress of the modern economy. Thus, the government must shift its focus from carbon emissions caused by energy production to more modern green energies that foster economic growth. Additionally, the research demonstrated that the more electricity is consumed, the greater the demand for it, necessitating the government to ensure the stability of electricity supply. This may be the result of the entry of new industries, plants, and other related activities.
