Book excerpt: A member of the famous artist-owned photo agency Magnum Photos, Swiss photographer René Burri (1933-2014) found himself wherever history was happening during the late twentieth century. His countless travels took him across Europe and the Americas to the Middle East to Japan and China to document the twentieth century's major events. His extraordinary sense for people and their personalities resulted in remarkably candid portraits of celebrities, such as architects Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, and Luis Barragán; artists Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso, and Jean Tinguely; and Che Guevara, whose 1963 portrait with a cigar is one of the world's most famous and widely reproduced photographic portraits. Published to coincide with a major exhibition at Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne, René Burri: Explosions of Sight draws from Burri's vast archive. With the museum, Burri staged both his first exhibition and his first major retrospective and maintained a close relationship throughout his life, entrusting it also with the conservation of his estate. The book brings together for the first time Burri's entire body of work, both photographic and nonphotographic, including previously unpublished archival documents, as well as book designs, exhibition projects, travel diaries, collages, watercolors, and objects Burri collected. In doing so, it offers a new and uniquely intimate view of one of the world's greatest photographers.

Book Ren Burri Cuba Y Cuba

Download or read book Ren Burri Cuba Y Cuba written by BURRI R and published by Smithsonian Books (DC). This book was released on 1998-04-17 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smithsonian Institution Press is pleased to join Motta Fotografia, one of Europe's foremost publishers of photography, in presenting a series showcasing the work of postwar masters. Each book includes more than forty duotone or color images and represents an original approach to a particular theme by one of the century's finest documentary or fine-art photographers. Reports of poverty and waves of refugees have given most Americans the impression that contemporary Cuba is paralyzed by communist austerity and drained by economic isolation. Yet in Cuba y Cuba, Rene Burri, a Swiss-born documentary photographer who has turned his lens on the island since the early 1960s, records a people emanating quiet pride even as they wait for change.

  • Pages : 0 pages

Book excerpt: Last year marked the fiftieth anniversary of the inauguration of Brazil's capital Brasilia. Designed by architects Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, it has since become one of the most famous and widely studied urban planning projects. Niemeyer's cathedral, Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida; his building for the national parliament, the Congresso Nacional; and the city's 707-foot television tower have become icons of twentieth-century architecture. The entire city, marked by its cross-shaped layout and vast open spaces, was named a UNESO World Heritage site in 1987. René Burri, an internationally celebrated Swiss-born photographer and member of the legendary Magnum agency, visited the city for the first time on a long journey around South America in 1958, when most of Brasilia was a vast building site. He returned many times over more than thirty years, documenting the growth and development of this urban utopia. Besides documenting the buildings in various stages of completion, Burri took portraits of Niemeyer and his workers and photographed Brasilia's street scenes and people: workers with their tools, machinery and building materials, pedestrians on the newly finished streets and squares, and aerial views from the air of the city's first slums abutting brand-new blocks of residential buildings. His images capture the strong sense of a new era and a vibrant atmosphere of hard work and strain; they reflect the huge dimensions of the landscape and the great scale of this project and its ambition to design and build a new capital--and fill it with life. Complete with an essay by eminent architect and scholar of architectural history Arthur Rüegg, René Burri. Brasilia marks the city's fiftieth anniversary and allows readers to look at an extraordinary city through the eyes of an exceptional photographer.

Book excerpt: In the early 1960s, Constantine Manos spent three years living in Greece and working as a photographer under the auspices of the prestigious agency Magnum Photos. A Greek Portfolio represents an impromptu pictorial account of Manos's travels through rural Greece and the Greek islands. The strength of these black-and-white duotone images, taken in small country villages and on secluded farms, lies in their portrayal of a way of life that had remained virtually unchanged for centuries before finally being overtaken by the modern world-a way of life that may strike viewers as at once humble and exalted in its quiet dignity and beauty. A Greek Portfolio was first published in 1972; the limited first edition has since become a much sought-after collector's item. Upon publication, the work received awards at Arles and at the Leipzig Book Fair. This new edition has been enhanced through the addition of eight previously unpublished images and a new foreword. A traveling exhibition of prints in this country will coincide with the publication of the new edition. There will also be a major exhibition at the Benaki Museum in Athens, Greece. Images from this work are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.

Book excerpt: In 1970, Ki Lun-Tai, an abbot in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, decided to become a Buddhist monk. He built a thatched hut in front of his house, adopted a schizophrenic as his disciple, and began to raise pigs and chickens with his new helper, whom he kept on a line of string, much like a leash. Within 20 years Li Kun-Tai, by now rechristed (by himself) Hieh Kai Feng, had 600 deranged helpers, most chained together, almost exclusively consigned to him by their families, distraught by the shame of having to look after lunatics, or socially unacceptable misfits. Ten years later, in 1999, Long Fa Tang - the Temple of the Dragon - was recognized as the largest chicken farm in Taiwan, with a milliin chickens laying eggs and defecating in almost equal proportions. They are tended by helpers from the 700 mental patients in the care of the Temple, wading through slurry, eggs and chicken corpses.

Magnum Streetwise is the definitive collection of street photography from Magnum Photos, and an unparalleled opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the true greats of the genre. An essential addition to the street photography canon, this volume showcases hidden gems alongside many of street photography’s most famous images. Magnum photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson pioneered modern concepts of street photography before the term was even coined. A rich seam of street photography runs through the heart of Magnum to this day, both in the work of recognized masters of the genre—including Elliott Erwitt, Martin Parr, Bruce Gilden, and Richard Kalvar—and in the work of those who may not think of themselves as street photographers, despite their powerful influence on the current generation of budding artists. Magnum Streetwise is a true visual feast, interleaving insightful text and anecdotes within an intuitive blend of photographer- and theme-focused sections. Ambitious in scope and democratic in nature, Magnum Streetwise is an unmissable tour through the photographs and practices that have helped define what street photography is—and what it can be.
