Book Rendering Divine Names on Coins

Download or read book Rendering Divine Names on Coins written by David Bentley and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Jesus glanced at the temple coin, he said, “Render to Caesar.” This book’s title and theme are based upon Jesus’ command to give allegiance to both the state and God. Coauthor David Bentley is the historian-theologian who reads and translates the coins’ messages. Coauthor Brad Yonaka is the geologist-scientist who finds the copper, silver, and gold coins which are on display in nearly one hundred photo-figures throughout the text. Our God is represented by the Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam); his divine name has appeared on coins since biblical times. Even the most theologically astute readers will be surprised by our introduction of Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila as “tabernacle-makers” not “tent-makers.” Greek and Roman gods and goddesses, a few ancient Persian empires, the Islamic caliphs, and Qur’anic messages are present in this book. Each stamped their impressions on civilization. When Lincoln added “In God We Trust” during the Civil War, was it as Jesus commanded, a combination of honoring divine and governmental authorities? Or was it a counterfeit trust in dead presidents or self?

Download or read book Divine Currency written by Devin Singh and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how early economic ideas structured Christian thought and society, giving crucial insight into why money holds such power in the West. Examining the religious and theological sources of money's power, it shows how early Christian thinkers borrowed ancient notions of money and economic exchange from the Roman Empire as a basis for their new theological arguments. Monetary metaphors and images, including the minting of coins and debt slavery, provided frameworks for theologians to explain what happens in salvation. God became an economic administrator, for instance, and Christ functioned as a currency to purchase humanity's freedom. Such ideas, in turn, provided models for pastors and Christian emperors as they oversaw both resources and people, which led to new economic conceptions of state administration of populations and conferred a godly aura on the use of money. Divine Currency argues that this longstanding association of money with divine activity has contributed over the centuries to money's ever increasing significance, justifying various forms of politics that manage citizens along the way. Devin Singh's account sheds unexpected light on why we live in a world where nothing seems immune from the price mechanism.

Book The Epistle of Jesus to the Church

Download or read book The Epistle of Jesus to the Church written by James D. Quiggle and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Epistle of Jesus to the Church is a commentary on the book of Revelation that assumes Jesus was the author and John the reporter of the words and events described. Here one will not find an explanation of an anti-Roman message written by John in hidden codes and apocalyptic motifs to fool Roman authorities. John the apostle and prophet was the faithful scribe, who did not create the message but faithfully and accurately described all that he saw and heard. This commentary follows the principle that the Scriptures explain themselves, because the Revelation is a word from Jesus to his church--a word that is grounded in the Scriptures. The Epistle of Jesus to the Church has been written with teachers, students, and pastors in mind. The interpretation of the book of Revelation is thorough; difficult passages are addressed, and plausible answers are provided to the questions posed by in-depth study of the biblical book. This is a commentary for personal study or classroom instruction, one that may be confidently used to preach and teach the Revelation of Jesus to the church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From even before the time of Alexander the Great, the Greek gods spread throughout the Mediterranean, carried by settlers and largely adopted by the indigenous populations. By the third century b.c., gods bearing Greek names were worshipped everywhere from Spain to Afghanistan, with the resulting religious systems a variable blend of Greek and indigenous elements. Greek Gods Abroad examines the interaction between Greek religion and the cultures of the eastern Mediterranean with which it came into contact. Robert Parker shows how Greek conventions for naming gods were extended and adapted and provides bold new insights into religious and psychological values across the Mediterranean. The result is a rich portrait of ancient polytheism as it was practiced over 600 years of history.
