Book Resilient Health Care

  • Author : Erik Hollnagel
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2019-07-23
  • ISBN : 1317065166
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Resilient Health Care written by Erik Hollnagel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health care is everywhere under tremendous pressure with regard to efficiency, safety, and economic viability - to say nothing of having to meet various political agendas - and has responded by eagerly adopting techniques that have been useful in other industries, such as quality management, lean production, and high reliability. This has on the whole been met with limited success because health care as a non-trivial and multifaceted system differs significantly from most traditional industries. In order to allow health care systems to perform as expected and required, it is necessary to have concepts and methods that are able to cope with this complexity. Resilience engineering provides that capacity because its focus is on a system’s overall ability to sustain required operations under both expected and unexpected conditions rather than on individual features or qualities. Resilience engineering’s unique approach emphasises the usefulness of performance variability, and that successes and failures have the same aetiology. This book contains contributions from acknowledged international experts in health care, organisational studies and patient safety, as well as resilience engineering. Whereas current safety approaches primarily aim to reduce or eliminate the number of things that go wrong, Resilient Health Care aims to increase and improve the number of things that go right. Just as the WHO argues that health is more than the absence of illness, so does Resilient Health Care argue that safety is more than the absence of risk and accidents. This can be achieved by making use of the concrete experiences of resilience engineering, both conceptually (ways of thinking) and practically (ways of acting).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) presents a complex and challenging landscape for healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, who play a crucial role in the holistic care of patients with this condition. As the prevalence of CRF continues to rise globally, there is an increasing need for comprehensive resources that address the intricacies of nursing assessment, diagnosis, care planning, and intervention in CRF management. This book, "Nursing Diagnoses, Care Plans, Assessments, and Interventions for Chronic Renal Failure (CRF)," is designed to meet this need by providing a thorough exploration of key topics relevant to nursing practice in the context of CRF. Each chapter delves into essential aspects of CRF care, from understanding the pathophysiology and etiology of the condition to implementing evidence-based interventions and addressing special considerations in patient care. In Chapter 1, readers will find an overview of CRF, including its anatomy, physiology, etiology, and pathophysiology, laying the foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the condition. Chapter 2 focuses on nursing assessment in CRF, covering the physical assessment of the renal system, diagnostic tests, and assessment of fluid and electrolyte imbalances. Chapter 3 delves into nursing diagnoses in CRF, providing insights into common nursing diagnoses, prioritization strategies, and the development of care plans tailored to the individual needs of CRF patients. Chapter 4 expands on care planning, offering evidencebased interventions and patient education strategies to promote optimal outcomes. Pharmacological interventions in CRF management are discussed in Chapter 5, with a focus on medications, administration, monitoring, and management of complications. Non-pharmacological interventions, including dietary management, fluid and electrolyte management, and dialysis therapy, are explored in Chapter 6. Chapter 7 addresses special considerations in CRF care, such as psychosocial assessment, management of complications (hypertension, anemia, bone disease), and palliative care and end-of-life issues. Lastly, Chapter 8 emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and ethical considerations, highlighting the importance of teamwork, legal and ethical principles, and cultural competence in CRF care. We hope that this book serves as a valuable resource for nurses and healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with chronic renal failure. By integrating evidence-based practice with clinical expertise and compassionate care, we aim to enhance the quality of care and improve outcomes for individuals living with CRF.

Book Resilience in Palliative Care

Download or read book Resilience in Palliative Care written by Barbara Monroe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-09-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book of its kind, Resilience and Palliative Care - Achievement in adversity takes the increasing international literature on resilience and applies it to palliative and end-of-life care. The book offers an overview of all key aspects of palliative care, presented through a resilience perspective. Why do some patients and families break down while others surmounts the challenges facing them? What interventions strengthen individual, family and community coping? This book aims to facilitate change with people facing the crisis of death, dying and bereavement. Much of the existing literature has focused on risk, problems and vulnerability; the emerging concept of resilience focuses on strengths and possibilities. The 'total pain'/'total care' approach pioneered by Dame Cicely Saunders and St Christopher's Hospice now needs reinterpreting in the light of changing contexts and challenges. The realities of demographic change and resource-constrained health and social care environments have generated an increasingly risk focused approach to service delivery. A narrowly medicalised approach has inevitable limitations; professional care alone will be unable to meet need and demand in the face of ageingpopulations, changing patterns of illness and the need for equity. The resilience approach offers a counterbalance that harnesses the strengths of individuals and the communities in which they live and in which most of their dying will take place. Resilience thinking emphasises the importance of publichealth and creates a partnership between patients, professionals and community structures, seeking to build community capacity and to deliver a preventive health care that will leave future generations less afraid of the dying and bereavement that will confront all of us.This book offers insights into how, at all levels of planning and delivering palliative care, there is the opportunity to maximise coping, build an infrastructure for self-help, and increase the capacity of strengthened teams and organisations.

Book Resilience and Aging

Download or read book Resilience and Aging written by Andrew V. Wister and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Older aged adults face many adversities over the later life course. This edited volume will address the ways in which seniors bounce back from different types and combinations of adversity – termed “resilience”. While research has been accumulating that identifies inherent abilities and external resources needed to adapt and navigate stress-inducing experiences among aging and older adults, gaps remain in understanding the unique elements and processes of resilience. A series of chapters included in this book will address several overarching questions: why do some older individuals/families/communities adapt to adversity better than others; what are modifiable behavioral protective/risk factors related to resilience; and how can we foster resilience at the individual/community level and which approaches show the most promise? The spectrum of aging-related challenges and responses addressed in this book include: mental health; physical/functional health problems; multimorbidity; socio-economic deprivation; social isolation and loneliness; cultural dimensions of loneliness; housing/homelessness problems; and environmental disasters. This book presents cutting-edge science at the conceptual, methodological, empirical and practice levels applied to emerging resilience sub-fields in gerontology. It will also present potential areas of future research, policy and practice linked to these areas. During a period of the most rapid population aging in the US, Canada and many other nations, coupled with heightened global socio-political change, extending our knowledge of resilience will help society to make important adjustments to maximize health and wellness of older individuals. Supporting and enhancing resilience through technological, social and/or community-level advances in geroscience will help those facing adversity to thrive by harnessing, stretching, and leveraging a wide array of potential resources. The promotion of healthier older populations has far-reaching consequences for health care and social/community support systems, both in terms of public health including pandemic response, and the development and implementation of innovations in treatment and practice guidelines.

Book Resilience in Aging

    Book Details:
  • Author : Barbara Resnick
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2010-10-14
  • ISBN : 1441902325
  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book Resilience in Aging written by Barbara Resnick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-14 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The many significant technological and medical advances of the 21st century cannot overcome the escalating risk posed to older adults by such stressors as pain, weakness, fatigue, depression, anxiety, memory and other cognitive deficits, hearing loss, visual impairment, isolation, marginalization, and physical and mental illness. In order to overcome these and other challenges, and to maintain as high a quality of life as possible, older adults and the professionals who treat them need to promote and develop the capacity for resilience, which is innate in all of us to some degree. The purpose of this book is to provide the current scientific theory, clinical guidelines, and real-world interventions with regard to resilience as a clinical tool. To that end, the book addresses such issues as concepts and operationalization of resilience; relevance of resilience to successful aging; impact of personality and genetics on resilience; relationship between resilience and motivation; relationship between resilience and survival; promoting resilience in long-term care; and the lifespan approach to resilience. By addressing ways in which the hypothetical and theoretical concepts of resilience can be applied in geriatric practice, Resilience in Aging provides inroads to the current knowledge and practice of resilience from the perspectives of physiology, psychology, culture, creativity, and economics. In addition, the book considers the impact of resilience on critical aspects of life for older adults such as policy issues (e.g., nursing home policies, Medicare guidelines), health and wellness, motivation, spirituality, and survival. Following these discussions, the book focuses on interventions that increase resilience. The intervention chapters include case studies and are intended to be useful at the clinical level. The book concludes with a discussion of future directions in optimizing resilience in the elderly and the importance of a lifespan approach to aging.
