Book excerpt: Shakespeare's actors did not receive a copy of the entire script but instead worked from "cue-scripts" or "part scripts" which contained only the lines and cues for a single character. The Renaissance Acting Editions provide cue-scripts for those who wish to experiment with the early modern acting process. Each play in the series consists of a set of cue-scripts and an unabridged prompt-script in modern font edited and prepared from William Shakespeare's First Folio of 1623. A "platt" (a.k.a. a "plot," a running list of entrances, exits, and major stage business) and instructions for assembling a cue-script roll are also included. These editions are not direct transcriptions of the First Folio texts. Original spelling, punctuation, and verse lineation have been retained throughout, but minimal revision has been done (e.g., correction of missing entrances and exits, restoration of simultaneous dialogue, etc.) to make the scripts more user-friendly.

Download or read book The Tragedie of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated edition of The Tragedie of Romeo and Juliet provides two valuable textual services to its readers. It restores the language of Shakespeare to that of the First Folio of 1623, with its idiosyncratic but illuminating spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. It also provides footnotes and annotations that are candid and plainspoken in their accounting of Shakespeare's themes, especially his frequent if oft-overlooked and underappreciated bawdy puns and allusions. An extensive introduction is included, as are appendices detailing typographical errors, stage directions, emended lineations and character tags from the First Folio.

These new editions have specific emphasis on the performance histories of the plays (on stage and screen). Features of each edition include: The original introduction to the Kittredge Edition Editor’s Introduction to the Focus Edition. An overview on major themes of the plays, and sections on the play’s performance history on stage and screen. Explanatory Notes. Performance notes. These appear separately and immediately below the textual footnotes and include discussions of noteworthy stagings of the plays, issues of interpretation, and film and stage choices. How to read the play as Performance Section. A discussion of the written play vs. the play as performed and the various ways in which Shakespeare’s words allow the reader to envision the work "off the page." Comprehensive Timeline. Covering major historical events (with brief annotations) as well as relevant details from Shakespeare’s life. Some of the Chronologies include time chronologies within the plays. Topics for Discussion and Further Study Section. Critical Issues: Dealing with the text in a larger context and considerations of character, genre, language, and interpretative problems.
