Book Sustainable Heavy Metal Remediation

Download or read book Sustainable Heavy Metal Remediation written by Eldon R. Rene and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an assortment of case-studies pertaining to the use of sustainable technologies for heavy metal removal and recovery from mining and metallurgical wastes, construction and demolition wastes, spent catalysts and electronic wastes. Wastewaters from diverse industrial and mining activities have caused pollution problems, but these sectors also serve as a hotspot for metal recovery. Several metal removal technologies based on physical, chemical and biological processes have been successfully implemented in full-scale operation, while metal recovery, which is beneficial for economic and environmental reasons, is still limited due to challenges arising from downstream processing. For instance, microbial recovery (bioleaching) of metals from their ores is an established technology with a number of full-scale applications. Bioleaching of electronic wastes to recover metals is also a highly promising technology with low environmental impact and high cost-effectiveness; yet, this technology is still at its infancy. As the individual chapters of this book focuses on the applications and limitations of different technologies, this book will serve as an excellent resource for chemical engineers, environmental engineers, mining engineers, biotechnologists, graduate students and researchers in these areas.

Book Treatment and Recovery of Heavy Metals from Acid Mine Drainage Using Polymer Chelation and Membrane Filtration

Download or read book Treatment and Recovery of Heavy Metals from Acid Mine Drainage Using Polymer Chelation and Membrane Filtration written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process considered in this study is based on the use of sequestering or chelating agents, with emphasis on water-based macromolecular compounds, which demonstrate selectivity for the extraction of copper, lead, zinc, and cadmium, coupled with an appropriate membrane that would effectively separate the organic metal complex and allow the metal-free aqueous phase to permeate through the membrane as a treated effluent. The process design has the objectives of generating a concentrate which would contain close to 100 percent of the metal chelates in the solution which could then be acidified in order to recover the metals from the chelants, allowing both the metals and the chelants to be reused. The method of the polymer binding-membrane filtration was evaluated for the removal of heavy metals from acid mine drainage. The experimental studies were done on bench-scale level using both actual and synthetic mining effluents. The report includes test results, discussion, and recommendations for future work.

This book was released on 2023-07-19 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HYBRIDIZIED TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE TREATMENT OF MINING EFFLUENTS The main goal of this book is to review the principles, development, and performances of hybridized technologies that have been used for the treatment of mine effluents. Recent developments consist of the integration/hybridization of technologies to achieve the effective removal of pollutants from acid mine drainage (AMD) effluents in a stepwise manner such as to ensure that the cost of the process is minimized, and the resulting water is fit for purpose. This book presents eight specialized chapters that provide a state-of-the-art review of the different hybridized technologies that have been developed over the years for the treatment of mine effluent, including AMD. The successful implementation and challenges of these technologies are highlighted to give the reader a perspective on the management of such waste in the mining industry. In this innovative book, readers will be introduced to The limitations of passive and active treatment processes as stand-alone technologies while appraising the functioning and performances of these technologies when combined to address their challenges; The numerous approaches that have been considered over the years for effective combination of these technologies are explored taking into account their successful implementation at large scale as well as the long-term sustainability. Book Best Practice Guide on Metals Removal From Drinking Water By Treatment

Download or read book Best Practice Guide on Metals Removal From Drinking Water By Treatment written by Mustafa Ersoz and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water Set - buy all five books together to save over 30%! The EU Drinking Water Directive sets a range of standards for metals and related substances in drinking water, many of which are concerned with health protection. A number of these standards are very stringent and require compliance to be assessed at the point of use. Because of the difficulties associated with monitoring, historic practices in many countries have concentrated on the quality of water within the distribution network. As a result, the magnitude of problems with some metals and related substances in drinking water is not fully appreciated in all European countries, and the extent and nature of corrective actions differ widely. This Best Practice Guide on Metals Removal From Drinking Water By Treatment describes drinking water standards and regulations, and explains the impact of a range of water treatment processes on metal levels in drinking water. Its objectives are to provide a basis for assessing the extent of problems and to identify appropriate water treatment options. The Guide provides a reasoned guide to selection of key water treatment processes. Each chapter focuses on a specific water treatment process and has been written by experts in that particular process. Best Practice Guide on Metals Removal From Drinking Water By Treatment provides practice-based knowledge for water engineers and scientists in large and small water utilities, regulatory agencies, health agencies and local municipalities (from cities through to small rural communities). It also supports university level teaching in degree schemes that relate to water management. This Guide is one of a series produced by the International Water Association’s Specialist Group on Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water. The series is an up-to-date compilation of a range of scientific, engineering, regulatory and operational issues concerned with the control and removal of metals from drinking water.

Book Metal Removal and Recovery from Mining Wastewater and E waste Leachate

Download or read book Metal Removal and Recovery from Mining Wastewater and E waste Leachate written by Suthee Janyasuthiwong and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal contamination in the environment is a persisting global issue. The metal reservoirs in the earth have declined due to society’s needs and due to uncontrolled mining activities. Therefore, the idea to recover metals from waste streams has emerged. In this thesis, cost competitive technologies such as adsorption using agro-wastes and precipitation using an inverse fluidized bed (IFB) reactor were investigated, with special emphasis on the recovery of base metals. Groundnut shell showed good potential for metal (Cu, Pb and Zn) removal. From artificial neural network modeling, the performance of the sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) was found to be strongly pH dependent; the removal efficiency of Cu and Zn in the IFB at pH 5.0 was >97%. Electronic waste is a good candidate as secondary metal resource. The recovery of Cu from computer printed circuited boards (PCBs) using biogenic sulfide precipitation was investigated as well. Using this technology, Cu could be recovered at ~0.48 g Cu/g PCBs.

Book Treating Acid Mine Drainage from Abandoned Mines in Remote Areas

Download or read book Treating Acid Mine Drainage from Abandoned Mines in Remote Areas written by John J. Metesh and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the results and conclusions gained from the three demonstration projects. The paper concentrates on the characteristics of the processed material, equipment production, and the cost of the operation. Samples taken from windrows during the crushing operation were tested to determine hardness and gradations before and after crushing. The test results are included in the appendix. Cost varied from $6.38 to $18.83 per cubic yard, including roadbed preparation, crushing and blading. Rocks and boulders to‍?16-inch (406 millimeter) maximum size were crushed. The processed material has a maximum size of 2 to 3 inches (50 to 75 millimeters).‍?The product produced by the crusher offers a viable alternative for aggregate on a road surface, particularly as a road surface cushion material, where the quality and expense of standard crushed aggregate are not warranted.
