The growing interest in Quantitative Microbial Risk assessment (QMRA) for safe drinking water requires such data. These MEC or MIC values have been calculated from research on elimination of viruses, bacteria and bacterial spores and protozoa (oo)cysts (Cryptosporidium and Giardia) by these treatment processes published in the international literature. The data have been selected on the base of different quality criteria related to information on applied experimental conditions and used methods. Furthermore the studies have been categorized on base of their similarities with ‘real world’ conditions (selected micro-organisms, scale and conditions of the tested processes). The international literature data revealed a high variation in elimination. The major parameters and process control parameters affecting elimination are described. Book excerpt: Recent and forecasted advances in microbiology, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry have made it timely to reassess the current paradigm of relying predominantly or exclusively on traditional bacterial indicators for all types of waterborne pathogens. Nonetheless, indicator approaches will still be required for the foreseeable future because it is not practical or feasible to monitor for the complete spectrum of microorganisms that may occur in water, and many known pathogens are difficult to detect directly and reliably in water samples. This comprehensive report recommends the development and use of a "tool box" approach by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency and others for assessing microbial water quality in which available indicator organisms (and/or pathogens in some cases) and detection method(s) are matched to the requirements of a particular application. The report further recommends the use of a phased, three-level monitoring framework to support the selection of indicators and indicator approaches.Â

There are many treatment options to eliminate pathogenic microbes from drinking-water. Finding the right solution for a particular supply requires sifting through a range of sometimes competing processes. Processes for removal of microbes from water include pretreatment, coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation, and filtration. Pretreatment processes include application of roughing filters, microstrainers, off-stream storage, or bank infiltration, each with a particular function and water quality benefit. Filtration can be accomplished using granular media filters, slow sand, precoat filters, membranes, or other filters. Oxidants may be added to water for a variety of purposes, including control of taste and odor compounds, removal of iron and manganese, Zebra Mussel control, and particle removal, among others. For control of microbes within the distribution system, disinfectants must interact with bacteria growing in pipeline biofilms. Models for removal of particles and microbes by granular media filtration, and equations for predicting microbial inactivation by disinfectants, can aid in the understanding and prediction of the effectiveness of treatment processes for microbial pathogens. Water Treatment and Pathogen Control is intended to provide a critical analysis of the literature on removal and inactivation of pathogenic microbes in water to aid the water quality specialist and design engineer in making important decisions regarding microbial water quality. Book excerpt: Pathogens in drinking water and their associated waterborne diseases are of great concern to the public health. More work related microbial detection and removal is needed. In this research, new methods using lanthanum-based chemical flocculation for concentration of bacteria and virus in water was successfully developed. The results showed that compared to traditional flocculants, LaCl3 had the highest recovery efficiencies for bacteria and viruses detection based on microrespirometric assay, real-time PCR enumeration and infectivity assay. Compared to direct cartridge filtration using Nanoceram® and 1MDS, the lanthanum-based chemical concentration method coupled with modified membrane filtration procedures has advantages in eliminating the use of expensive cartridge filters with improved virus detection efficiency. A mixture of bacteriophages isolated from municipal wastewater was used to control and remove biofilms. The results showed that P. aeruginosa phages effectively controlled and removed the bacterial biofilms. A combined use of phages and chlorine inhibited P. aeruginosa biofilm formation and removed pre-existing biofilms to a greater extent. Phages were also used to remove P. aeruginosa selectively in water filtration systems. The results indicate that for clean GAC filter, phage treatment not only effectively removes P. aeruginosa cells on the surface of filter media but also those located in the interior. The addition of phage did not affect the nitrification in the anthracite filtration system while the conversion of nitrite was affected to some extent in the GAC filter.
