Observation and monitoring of the distribution and dynamics of mangroves is central to a wide range of scientific investigations conducted in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Recent advancements in remote sensing data availability, image-processing methodologies, computing and information technology, and human resource development have provided an opportunity to observe and monitor mangroves from local to global scales on a regular basis. The spectral, spatial, and temporal resolution of remote sensing data and their availability have improved, making it possible to observe and monitor mangroves with unprecedented spatial thematic and temporal details. This journal Remote Sensing Special Issue reprint dedicated to the observation and monitoring of mangroves using remote sensing from local to global scales. The Issue broadly covers the application of remote sensing using optical (multi-spectral and hyperspectral), radar, and Lidar data obtained from multiple platforms including ground, air, and space. Book excerpt: This book uses five decades of map data, air photos, and medium to high-resolution satellite imagery to track the expansions of aquaculture and the loss of both estuarine and mangrove land covers in Ecuador. The results are staggering. In some regions, Ecuador has lost almost 50% of its estuarine space and approximately 80% of its mangrove forest. The current estuarine land cover bears no resemblance to the historic estuarine land cover. The analysis is complete from 1968 to 2014. The analysis covers all the major estuaries of mainland Ecuador. The research expands beyond purely land cover into the land use of the estuaries and the implications of the land cover transitions. The author lived in Ecuador's estuarine environments for almost two years studying this area. During this time he conducted mapping workshops with local residents, conducted 100 interviews with local actors, conducted six group discussions with fisherfolk syndicates, conducted eight presentations, worked on a shrimp farm. He was employed by the Ministry of the Environment on a Prometeo fellowship for one-year researching estuarine health and worked on mangrove replanting projects in the estuaries. In addition to the remote sensing data, the author provides a contextual framework to the analysis. It is not just hard numbers that are presented, but a remote sensing analysis tied to local actors that tell a coherent almost 50 -year estuarine story at the national, provincial, and local scales The book is intended for researchers, academics, graduate students, NGOs, and government actors including those who work in development, environment, and policy implementation. It is suitable supplemental reading for students in courses related to the coastal zone, land use change, and remote sensing. The electronically supplementary material includes all the related data to underpin the analysis as well as all the resulting GIS files.

Book excerpt: Mangrove forests are critical to mitigating climate change and provide many essential benefits to their ecosystems and local environments but are under threat due to deforestation. However, monitoring mangroves through remote sensing can help pinpoint and alleviate the causes of their deforestation. Machine learning can be used with remotely sensed low-resolution satellite or high-resolution aerial imagery to automatically create mangrove extent maps with higher accuracy and frequency than previously possible. This study explores and offers recommendations for two practical scenarios. In the first practical scenario, where only low-resolution hyperspectral satellite imagery is acquired, we implemented several classical machine learning models and applied these results to data acquired in the Clarendon parish of Jamaica. We found that utilizing extensive feature engineering and hyperspectral bands can result in strong performance for mangrove extent classification, with an accuracy of 93% for our extremely randomized trees model. In the second practical scenario, we explored when there is full coverage of both low-resolution satellite and high-resolution aerial imagery over a survey area. We created a hybrid model which fuses low-resolution pixels and high-resolution imagery, achieving an accuracy of 97% when applied to a dataset based in Baja California Sur, Mexico, offering another high-performance method to automatically create mangrove extent maps if both high- and low-resolution imagery is available. Overall, the methods tested over these two scenarios provide stakeholders flexibility in data and methods used to achieve accurate, automatic mangrove extent measurement, enabling more frequent mangrove monitoring and further enabling the protection of these important ecosystems.
