Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allen's stated purpose for this students' handbook was to assemble "such of the remains of the earliest Latin-primarily inscriptions-as are most important as monuments of the language, with enough explanation to make them fairly intelligible." This reprint of the 1880 edition of Remnants of Early Latin covers the earliest inscriptions and literary remains of Latin during the Republican period (ca. 100 B.C.). A short introduction (pp. 3-13) serves as a grammar of Early Latin, listing about 60 phonetic and inflexional pecularities in which it differs from standard classical Latin, with examples of old Saturnian verse. Part I follows with 150 inscriptions of varying lengths, taken from coins, cups, epitaphs, dedicatory and other inscriptions, with extensive commentaries in the footnotes. Part II collects remains from various literary sources-including old prayers from Cato's De Re Rustica and fragments of the Laws of the Twelve Tables, again with commentary. Also features an index of all early Latin words cited in the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remains of Old Latin, Vol. 1 of 3: Ennius and Caecilius In a good many laces the Greek model or source of an old Latin agment is known or deduced; in such cases the Greek original has been quoted or referred to at the beginning of the relevant item on the Latin page, but not'translated. Again', in some cases the source which quotes a substantial fragment shows how the old Latin poet not only drew upon some older Greek source, but also inspired some later Latin poet; thus we have fragments of Ennius which imitated Homer and were imitated by Virgil. In such cases the passages from the original Greek author, from the old Latin poet, and from the later Latin poet, have been given in full, both in text and in translation. Book Remains of Old Latin Vol 3 of 4

Download or read book Remains of Old Latin Vol 3 of 4 written by Eric Herbert Warmington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remains of Old Latin, Vol. 3 of 4: Newly Edited and Translated; Lucilius, the Twelve Tables IN the introduction to the first volume of this series of Remains of Old Latin it was stated (pp. Vii - viii) that there would be three volumes; that, of literary remains, fragments of poets only would be included; and that the third volume would contain Lucilius and old Latin inscriptions. But a change in plan has now been made, so as to include the Twelve Tables of Roman Law, without excluding inscriptions of a readable length down to 80 b.c. The series there fore contains four volumes instead of three, Lucilius and the Twelve Tables being assigned to this volume - the third - the inscriptions to the fourth. Pages vii - viii of the introduction to volume I, and the title pages of volumes I and II, no longer describe the scope of the series accurately. This is to be regretted, but the change is for the better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Emergence of Latin American Science Fiction

Download or read book The Emergence of Latin American Science Fiction written by Rachel Haywood Ferreira and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early science fiction has often been associated almost exclusively with Northern industrialized nations. In this groundbreaking exploration of the science fiction written in Latin America prior to 1920, Rachel Haywood Ferreira argues that science fiction has always been a global genre. She traces how and why the genre quickly reached Latin America and analyzes how writers in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico adapted science fiction to reflect their own realities. Among the texts discussed are one of the first defenses of Darwinism in Latin America, a tale of a time-traveling history book, and a Latin American Frankenstein. Latin American science fiction writers have long been active participants in the sf literary tradition, expanding the limits of the genre and deepening our perception of the role of science and technology in the Latin American imagination. The book includes a chronological bibliography of science fiction published from 1775 to 1920 in all Latin American countries.
