Book Tours of Hell

  • Author : Martha Himmelfarb
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2016-11-11
  • ISBN : 1512802778

Download or read book Tours of Hell written by Martha Himmelfarb and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the ancient Book of the Dead to Dante's Divine Comedy, the living have attempted to describe the world of the dead. Tours of Hell focuses on one form of that attempt: the tours of hell found in Jewish and Christian apocalypses of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Himmelfarb examines seventeen texts, preserved in five languages and spanning a thousand years of human history. These include Hebrew texts and Christian texts in Greek, Latin, Ethiopic, and Coptic, such as the Apocalypse of Peter and the Apocalypse of Paul family. Muslim texts, medieval visions, and other related literatures are also discussed. Himmelfarb details the common elements of the tour tradition, including such features as a hero or heroine figure, a heavenly revealer, and descriptions of the punishments awaiting those who arrive in hell. She convincingly refutes the accepted nineteenth-century critical view of the earliest of these tours, the Apocalypse of Peter, as a Christian form of an "Orphic-Pythagorean" descent to Hades. She place the work instead on the family tree of the tour apocalypse, a genre she traces back to the third century B.C.E. Book of the Watchers (1 Enoch 1-36). Linking the Apocalypse of Peter with later Jewish tours of hell, Himmelfarb reveals significant sin-and-punishment combinations that seem to point to a common source, which she theorizes to be a lost Jewish Tour work of the late Second Temple period. Rich and fascinating texts seldom before brought to light are treated in detail in this pioneering study. A comprehensive work on the apocalyptic tradition, Tours of Hell will be of great interest to scholars and students of religion, history, ancient and medieval literature, and Dante studies.

Book excerpt: From the beginning, Muley Tatum is a thorn in Marshal Carson's side. Muley is a hideous, grinning character that kills for virtually no reason, and he rides with whatever set of misfits he can persuade. Most are of outlaw nature, such as PossumTucker, who escaped jail to re-associate with the horrendous outlaw. But there is also a pair of brothers, trail riders up from Texas, that follow the devious man in black, looking for, they don't know what - perhaps a chance for something better than going back to herding cows in Texas. Carson was instilled as a U.S. Marshal by President Grover Cleveland, being solicited for the job by the Kansas governor and a territorial Judge, to bring reasonable law and order to the Dodge City area following the antics of the Earps, Luke Short, Mastersons, etc. The trails Carson follows to corral the demented Muley Tatum are many, all of them laced with death. But uniquely, Tatum has a generous kindheartedness toward women folk that came about when he was a youngster - but it's a weakness that could get him killed.

Book excerpt: Steve doesn't care who he was.He knows more than enough to realize it doesn't matter at all.Now living in what had once been the Creeplands and maintaining a thriving farm there, they are under constant siege from the Creep itself. It's still better than life in Lamals. And that's just how it is. After taking over the Citadel, removing Lynn from her place of power, stopping the Creep's advance, and starting to take over part of the Creeplands, he was certainly making a difference for himself, humans, and men everywhere. But with the problems that were close to home eliminated, he now needs to start working on external threats to his personal world. His Citadel and his two farms. Before he had only concerned himself with what was near and dear to him, but he'd overlooked that others saw him as a resource to be utilized.Or eliminated. On top of all of that, it's becoming clear that he's rapidly reaching the end of his task. A task he doesn't truly know or understand, but one that he apparently agreed to when he still had all his memories. A task assigned to him by a merciless voice that clearly thinks little of him.Family troubles are starting to look like a sweet memory and dream compared to what's on the horizon for him.His path could very well lead to the complete collapse of Lamals. At least, if he has anything to say about it.This time around, however, even his axe may not be up to the job and he'll have to resort to more drastic measures. After all, any problem can be solved with the right application of force.Even a road to hell paved with good intentions.Right?Warning and minor spoiler: This novel contains graphic violence, undefined relationships/harem, unconventional opinions/beliefs, and a hero who is as tactful as a dog at a cat show. Book Rethinking Hell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most evangelical Christians believe that those people who are not saved before they die will be punished in hell forever. But is this what the Bible truly teaches? Do Christians need to rethink their understanding of hell? In the late twentieth century, a growing number of evangelical theologians, biblical scholars, and philosophers began to reject the traditional doctrine of eternal conscious torment in hell in favor of a minority theological perspective called conditional immortality. This view contends that the unsaved are resurrected to face divine judgment, just as Christians have always believed, but due to the fact that immortality is only given to those who are in Christ, the unsaved do not exist forever in hell. Instead, they face the punishment of the "second death"--an end to their conscious existence. This volume brings together excerpts from a variety of well-respected evangelical thinkers, including John Stott, John Wenham, and E. Earl Ellis, as they articulate the biblical, theological, and philosophical arguments for conditionalism. These readings will give thoughtful Christians strong evidence that there are indeed compelling reasons for rethinking hell.

Book excerpt: Sophie Keyes has made a mistake that might destroy the universe. The Traveler has an offer: go back in time, fix your mistake, and save the world. Easy. Except that fixing Sophie's mistake means destroying her life, and Lincoln Marshall won't stand to see that happen. Not if he can time travel with them to find another way. Their attempt to jump into the past goes awry and dumps them into Reno 2006, where Elise Kavanagh is in hiding with James Faulkner. It's a delicate moment in the timeline, and if Lincoln takes a single wrong step, he'll change everything. He can't go to Elise for help. He can't speak to the woman he's loved for years, touch her again, kiss her... Not unless he's willing to bring the universe that much closer to destruction. For the Godslayer, Lincoln might be willing to lose it all. For the Traveler, it might be a step too far. War is breaking out in Reno 2006, and the consequences threaten to ripple through time--assuming that they don't make the entire world fall apart first. Book 3 of the A Fistful of Daggers series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacob Neusner, the preeminent Judaic scholar who is himself a Jew and a Zionist, here explores the issue he believes to be at the very heart of American Judaism: how two events remote from the experience of most American Jews have become the twin pillars upon which their world view is built. These two events, the murder of six million Jews between 1933 and 1945 and the subsequent creation of the State of Israel, form what Neusner calls the myth of the Holocaust and redemption. 'Stranger at Home' scrutinizes the paradox of a central myth generated out of events never witnessed and a place never inhabited by the majority of American Jewry. Written over a period of nearly twenty years, these systematically related essays begin with an analysis of the social and psychological problems confronting American Jews. The second and third set of studies concern the implications of the two elements that constitute the mythic vision that begins in death, the Holocaust, and is completed by rebirth, Israel. Finally the author offers his view of the actual and desirable role of Zionism for the Jewish community outside of Israel. Neusner's penetrating exposition sheds light on the search of an American minority culture for identity in the context of freedom and free choice and on the process of adaptation of an archaic religious tradition to modernity.

Book excerpt: The gates of hell shall not prevail. Decimated by war, revolution, and famine, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Russia was in critical condition in 1921. In The Gates of Hell, Matthew Heise recounts the bravery and suffering of German--Russian Lutherans during the period between the two great world wars. These stories tell of ordinary Christians who remained faithful to death in the face of state persecution. Christians in Russia had dark days characterized by defeat, but God preserved his church. Against all human odds, the church would outlast the man--made sandcastles of communist utopianism. The Gates of Hell is a wonderful testimony to the enduring power of God's word, Christ's church, and the Spirit's faithfulness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning reexamination of one of the essential tenets of Christian belief from one of the most provocative and admired writers on religion today “A scathing, vigorous, eloquent attack on those who hold that that there is such a thing as eternal damnation.”—Karen Kilby, Commonweal The great fourth-century church father Basil of Caesarea once observed that, in his time, most Christians believed that hell was not everlasting, and that all would eventually attain salvation. But today, this view is no longer prevalent within Christian communities. In this momentous book, David Bentley Hart makes the case that nearly two millennia of dogmatic tradition have misled readers on the crucial matter of universal salvation. On the basis of the earliest Christian writings, theological tradition, scripture, and logic, Hart argues that if God is the good creator of all, he is the savior of all, without fail. And if he is not the savior of all, the Kingdom is only a dream, and creation something considerably worse than a nightmare. But it is not so. There is no such thing as eternal damnation; all will be saved. With great rhetorical power, wit, and emotional range, Hart offers a new perspective on one of Christianity’s most important themes.
