Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War: Or Incidents Which Transpired in and About Chambersburg, During the War of the Rebellion It was in Chambersburg that John Brown, then known only as Dr. Smith, the prospector of Maryland ores, planned his mad raid on Harper's Ferry and fought the first skirmish of the war two years before the divided sections could realize that war was upon them, and the blackened walls and broken columns and withered shades which told of Chambersburg's desolation in 1864, were measurably the sequel of the innocent hospitality given to the unknown John Brown five years before. There is, therefore, much of the thrilling romance of the war's history that centres in and about Chambersburg, and itis unfortunate that it has not been preserved by some competent historian. The unwritten chapters of the war which relate to Chambersburg, would make a volume of surpassing interest, and add much to the as yet imperfect history of the greatest war of modern times. With the exception of a few unpretentious scraps of history about the Lee invasion and the burning of Chambersburg, there has been nothing written in any way calculated to preserve in history the trials and sacrifices of the faithful border people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865 My War Reminiscences as originally written were not intended for publication. During all the years subsequent to the close of the War I had been asked from time to time by my daughters, Lottie and Edith, to write down the stories I had told them of my war experiences; I had written from time to time in complying with their wishes, descriptions of many of the movements and battles, and as I progressed the work became interesting to myself, until it finally assumed the form of a complete story from the beginning to the end, and still it was my purpose that there should be but an edition of two volumes, typewritten and bound, for my daughters only. My friends had seen something of the story, and suggested that it should be given to the public in some form, and to this I finally agreed, and its first appearance was in a revised form for the Nashua Telegraph, published in weekly chapters. Since its publication I have had numerous letters from many sources, urging that it should be published in book form. These letters from well known people throughout the state and country have been so highly commendatory I have found courage to submit the work for public approval. In the preparation of this book I have received most valuable assistance from Miss Lottie B. Plummer, my Deputy and co-worker in the Probate Office, who has typewritten the entire work from dictation. I am also indebted to many of my old comrades of the 3rd N. H. Regiment for assistance and suggestions, especially to Maj. J. Homer Edgerly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once again, the soldiers, officers, and commanders tell the story in this third volume of Kevin Campbell’s comprehensive work on the Gettysburg Campaign, Journey to Armageddon. The hardships, comradery, short rations, and the dance with the enemy’s bullets and shells are all here. Blistering sun, drenching rains, chocking dust, sticky mud, played out horses and men, and the high-level, often inharmoniousness communications between army commanders and their governments are presented in these pages. Fortunately, not all is despair and doom. Included are the sometimes-humorous interactions with the civilians met along their journey and the acrimony that frequently filled encounters between hungry soldiers and the administrators of the villages and towns they passed through. The tales told by these hardy men about the events of their existence are significant elements within the story of the Gettysburg Campaign, which author Kevin Campbell tells in a clear and concise prose. Most historians who write of the great crusade gloss over these events in favor of the more prominent proceedings in and around Gettysburg. These often-ignored events and much more are incorporated into his complete treatment of the Union and Confederate armies on their journey to Armageddon.

Book My Recollections of the War of the Rebellion Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Recollections of the War of the Rebellion Classic Reprint written by William B. Lapham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections of the War of the Rebellion The incidents related in this little volume are chiefly confined to the regiment and batterv to which I belonged, and yet what. Is true of one organization whether in camp or in the field, is to a certain extent, true of others. The drill, the guard duty and the camp sports are essentially the same, and since war means killing, the methods adopted for this purpose in every action, are practicallv the same. The Twenty-third Maine Regiment served its term of enlistment in doing guard dutv on the Potomac, from Alexandria to Harper's Ferry. It had no en gagcment with the enemy, and yet the death rate was uncommonly large, thereby indicating the character of its service The Seventh Maine Battery joined the army of the Potomac in the march to the Wilder ness, and participated in all the subsequent engage ments of that gallant army. There were a number of men, including the writer, who served in both of these organizations and had the varied experience incident to both. There were no two organizations that left the State to aid in putting down the rebel lion, that contained a greater proportion of first class men than the two under consideration. Besides a large number of independent farmers, there were college graduates, merchants, mechanics. Teachers and other professional men. They enlisted from purely patriotic motives, and served with an eye single to the preservation of the Union. More than thirty years have elapsed since the regiment was organized, and many 'of those who survived the war, have since gone the way of all the earth. The scope oi this work will admit of only brief mention of any of them, but if such brief mention shall in any manner serve to keep green their memories and preserve the record of their sacrifices and heroic deeds, its preparation and its publication will not have been in vain.
