Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in the midst of the Civil War, its battlefields were being dedicated as hallowed ground. Today, those sites are among the most visited places in the United States. In contrast, the battlegrounds of the Revolutionary War had seemingly been forgotten in the aftermath of the conflict in which the nation forged its independence. Decades after the signing of the Constitution, the battlefields of Yorktown, Saratoga, Fort Moultrie, Ticonderoga, Guilford Courthouse, Kings Mountain, and Cowpens, among others, were unmarked except for crumbling forts and overgrown ramparts. Not until the late 1820s did Americans begin to recognize the importance of these places. In Memories of War, Thomas A. Chambers recounts America's rediscovery of its early national history through the rise of battlefield tourism in the first half of the nineteenth century. Travelers in this period, Chambers finds, wanted more than recitations of regimental movements when they visited battlefields; they desired experiences that evoked strong emotions and leant meaning to the bleached bones and decaying fortifications of a past age. Chambers traces this impulse through efforts to commemorate Braddock's Field and Ticonderoga, the cultivated landscapes masking the violent past of the Hudson River valley, the overgrown ramparts of Southern war sites, and the scenic vistas at War of 1812 battlefields along the Niagara River. Describing a progression from neglect to the Romantic embrace of the landscape and then to ritualized remembrance, Chambers brings his narrative up to the beginning of the Civil War, during and after which the memorialization of such sites became routine, assuming significant political and cultural power in the American imagination.

Download or read book Reminiscences of the War Classic Reprint written by Abraham R. Howbert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War Since the President's proclamation of August 20, 1866, referring to the great rebellion, declared the, insurrection at an end, a vast number of those who were intelligent observers or actors in the events of that period have passed away, and a new generation of men has appeared on the stage of action. To them the rebellion and its stirring incidents are matters of history, of which they know nothing from observation, or from information acquired during that eventful period. Whatever will throw light on these must be of deep interest to thoughtful minds at present, and for all future time. They impart lessons, and are fraught with results, which should be understood by every citizen of the United States. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War of 1861-1865 Yielding to the suggestions of many companions and friends, who read my war reminiscences in The Buchanan News and Fincastle Herald, I have concluded to publish them in pamphlet form. They do not pretend to anything more than a personal illustration of what passed before the eyes of the writer, who bore an inconspicuous part in the bloody drama that was written on the pages of American history, 1861 to 1865. This second edition is published fifty-two years after the incidents herein mentioned occurred. In the past half century, the checkerboard of personal events in the writer's life is radiant with events of peril, pathos and pleasure, mingled with success and misfortune that has ebbed and flowed, rendering his life somewhat similar to Thackaray's "Story of Philip On His Way Through the World," who helped him, who kicked him, and who passed him by. If spared to reach my four-score years it is probable I will write and leave them as a legacy for the next generation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a War-Time Statesman and Diplomat 1830-1915 My long life is drawing toward its close. The portions of it that will have interest for those who are to come after me, I suppose are chiefly those which illustrate the character of the times and the characteristics of the persons concerned in them. So I set down my recollections of some of them here. Some of them have already been narrated in my Life and Letters of William H. Seward. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War, 1861-1865 Although many histories have been written and tradition has furnished its part toward the perpetuation of the memory of the exciting times of the civil war, very much occurred that has never been recorded. Monuments may be erected and histories written, but unless the veterans now living get busy and refresh their memories, and the memories of their comrades very much that happened, and ought to be preserved in durable form will with the passing of the main actors pass into oblivion. The Confederate Soldiers now living are all old men, and each one could, and ought to contribute items of information that would be interesting to the children and adults of future generations. These scenes, anecdotes, incidents and historical facts ought to be written by the soldiers themselves, for by no other means can a correct history of the war period be handed down to posterity. Book excerpt: "The early morning fog surrendered to the rising sun, as we marched into the wilderness. The last vestiges of civilization faded out of our sight, as the sunlight illuminated the woodland canopy and freshly blossomed trees that surrounded us."A quote from a Civil War soldier? A journal entry of a Civil War reenactor? Or both? With that simple statement, Jeffrey Williams begins his journal, and his journey through Civil War reenacting. In the pages that follow, he has skillfully woven historical information with present day reenacting. We are allowed to see moments of grandeur and moments of chaos. We see the realism of a medical demonstration, so well executed that the onlookers are made to realize the horror of war and its aftermath. We see the frustration of vehicles being stuck in the mud, supplies being short, tempers being short, and everything in general going wrong. This is the story of the American Civil War as told through the eyes of a veteran Civil War reenactor and historian. Whether you are a long-time reenactor, a beginner, or just someone who has a great interest in the history of the American Civil War, this book will cause you to laugh loudly sometimes, shake your head in bewilderment at other times, and smile knowingly when you "get the message." In the end, it will strengthen your faith in the overall goodness of mankind.
