Book Reminiscences Of The Nineteenth Massachusetts Regiment Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Reminiscences Of The Nineteenth Massachusetts Regiment Illustrated Edition written by Captain John G. B. Adams and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. The Nineteenth Massachusetts Regiment had a long and glorious history during the American Civil War, as the author states in his introduction— “For thirty-four years I have waited patiently for someone to write a history of the 19th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, but fearing that it may never be accomplished, I have concluded to send out this story. I do not dignify it by calling it a history. It is simply a soldier’s story, told by one of the "boys." Most of it is written from memory. The account of prison life is taken from an imperfect diary, kept by the writer while a prisoner of war. “ Captain Adams recounts the history of his illustrious regiment through the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville to perhaps their finest hour at Gettysburg, where five men of the 19th won the Congressional Medal of Honour. His own troubles in the war became worse upon his capture by Confederate soldiers after the battle of Cold Harbor, and, despite escaping, was recaptured. As he says, his is a soldier’s story. A very engaging one at that.

Not illustrated. 1883 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VII. THE CAMP AT NEWBERN. THE time that intervened between our return from Trenton and the active operations which began about the middle of March was the most quiet period of our service, and it seems the most appropriate interval to devote to such descriptive incidents and circumstances as may best set forth the experiences of the citizen soldier in the camp. Camp Rogers was a square of not less than eight hundred feet on each of its sides, --about as large as the enclosure between Broadway and Walnut, Fourth and Fifth Streets. Its symmetry, however, was slightly broken at the angle where it was bounded by the Trent. On its southerly border it rested on the road by which we marched to Trenton. At the central point of this side, three guard-tents were located, and this was the recognized official entrance to the camp. Directly opposite these tents, across the parade-ground which occupied the whole front of the camp, and was at least one hundred and fifty feet wide, was the company street of H, the central street of nine others. This street was nearly the same length as the depth of the parade-ground; that is, about one hundred and fifty feet. Our company was sheltered in six Sibley tents of a conical shape, sixteen feet in diameter at their bases, and about the same height, an opening of a foot being left at the top, with a cover over it for smoke and ventilation. These tents were of thick duck, and, after we became accustomed to their care, were really much more comfortable dwellings than would be supposed. They had one singular exposure, however: in some of our heaviest rains they would suddenly begin to leak for a foot or two upwards from their base. The rain dropped upon our faces as we lay asleep, and obliged us to have..

Download or read book Record of the Thirty Third Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry written by Andrew J. Boies and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Record of the Thirty-Third Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry: From Aug; 1862 to Aug; 1865 My object in presenting to the public the following pages is, to keep in memory some of the deeds of daring, acts of self-denial, unshrinking fortitude, patient endurance and pure patriotism of the "Brave Boys" who followed the flag upon the sanguinary fields of Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Lookout Mountain, Atlanta, and many other fields of blood and glory. It aims to give a true picture of the chivalrous exploits as dis played in the army during the three years of the Rebellion. It may be called the "Corporal's Diary." The material has been gathered from only one source, and can be relied upon as authentic. The work is not perfect. Exact order is not always adhered to in the arrangement. There is much that has been left out; but with my knowledge of the circumstances of the case 1 can only say that the Corporal has done the best he could. Had it been my plan to write a history, the diary contains enough material which might be easily expanded, and as I do not wish to assume the position of an Author, I hold in check my pen, and content myself with the modest title of Compiler. It being difficult to please everybody, and in fact, impossible, therefore I have not tried. These are simple facts - having been gathered while on the march and in the c& and I present them with the humble, yet sincere hope that they may do their part in fostering a true sense of the real dignity, and the immeasurable worth of all my comrades who showed their bravery, heroism and fortitude in the hour of our country's trial; when principles, and not mere preferences, were at stake.
