Book excerpt: Excerpt from New York as It Was Sixty Years Ago: Reminiscences New york as it was sixty years ago, and the great changes that have been made since, can be but faintly realized or understood by reading only still, the writer will endeavor to present a picture of the city as it existed in his boyhood days. The people did not live so fast then, but enjoyed themselves as thoroughly, had more real com fort, and were possessed of more sociability, every man knowing his neighbor and calling him friend. There were many places in the city at which their leisure hours could be passed pleasantly. The Battery was then a large, Open park, containing many fine shade-trees, and fronted by handsome dwellings on State street and Market field street, affording a delightful place for a promenade of a warm day or evening, not the least pleasant feature of which was the sniff of old ocean in the breeze from the harbor in front, the islands in the bay and the far-off hills of Staten Island and New Jersey furnishing the picturesque. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old New York: Or, Reminiscences of the Past Sixty Years, Being an Enlarged And; Revised Edition of the Anniversary Discourse, Delivered Before the New York Historical Society, November 17, 1857 It was considered desirable, on the occasion of inaugurating the new and beautiful edifice erected by the liberal contributions of the merchants and professional gentlemen of this city, for the permanent deposit of the manuscripts, books, and other property of the New York Historical Society, that the chief elements of civil and social development which have marked the annals of this metropolis, should be sketched in their origin and progress. As this could be most effectually done through personal reminiscences, the author of this brief historical record was chosen to perform the duty; partly because he is one of the few surviving early members of the Institution, and partly on account of the intimate relations he has sustained to many prominent citizens in all departments of life and vocation. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Years Memories of Art and Artists I have to apologize to the readers of this little book of memories for appearing before the public as a writer, for I have no claims to literary merit. My friends have urged me to this because they say I am one of the very few links remaining to connect the older generation of artists with the present schools, and they have thought what I might say of the long past and succeeding years might be of interest at the present time to students in art. Much of this story was written some six or seven years ago and put aside as of no value, but again I was urged to go on, and now have recorded my im pressions and clear recollections of times past. If I have persevered it is partly because I would like to inaugurate in my family the fashion of memoir making. I will confess, too, that some of the in cidents of travel and sport are so real, even after the lapse of years, and the passing of the old activity, that I do not wish them to die with me. I seek to give them a fresh lease of life in the memory of those who have cared for me and will remaln behind, and I dedicate them to my wife and to my children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Years of the Theater: An Old Critic's Memories Macready, Forrest, the Keans, the Booths, Daven port and their contemporaries, will readily assent to the degeneracy of the modern theater in all matters of sheer artistry and histrioni'sm. It is only in scenic accessories, and in the lighter and less permanent varieties of drama that it has made any notable advance. Some attempt has been made herein to point out some of the main causes of this generally acknowledged decadence, and to indicate the most hopeful measures for its arrest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Editors, Reporters, and Printers: During the Last Sixty Years T is now several years since some of my friends of the Fourth Estate pressed upon me to commit to paper my Reminiscences of Printers and Printing in Glasgow. I then respectfully declined their request. Since that time I have again and again been urged by them to put on record these memories, but could not see my way to comply with their wishes. These continued solicitations, combined with the fact that recently I was waited upon by deputations from the Glasgow Branch of the British Typographia to give a Lecture on the above subject, led me to consider the matter more favourably. As this branch had done its first year's work well, and was anxious to do still better the second year, I felt it both my duty and privilege to acquiesce, and encourage this worthy effort for the improvement of the rising genera tion of compositors and printers in Glasgow; and also to stimulate the endeavour being made to sustain the credit of our city by training skilled journeymen able to fill with honour any position in composing or machine room. There were no goods in the country, and provisions were very scarce. Ihave rode ten miles back and forth, to purchase salt pork at twenty cents per pound, which was equal to half a dollar now. The men who composed the then late army, were taken from the pursuit of agriculture, and many an acre was left uncultivated accordingly; not even bread was to be had in sufficient quantity, until it could be raised. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Years of Recollections, Vol. 1 of 2 One day Ste-Beuve said to me, 'I never speak of a writer until I have found the central point of his work, the dominant trait of his character; that is why I have not taken you up before as the subject of an essay. My perception of you was not sufficiently clear, but now I may begin; I fancy "I've got hold of you."' 'Well, ' I replied, 'seeing that you have got hold of me, tell me what I am, give me a definition of myself.' 'It Is the simplest thing in the world. That which strikes one most forcibly in you is the "unity" of your life. You have travelled along roads, very different from one another, but the aim pursued was always the same. Book The Bancrofts

Download or read book The Bancrofts written by Marie Bancroft and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bancrofts: Recollections of Sixty Years Shortly after the close of our twenty years of management, in 1885, we devoted two volumes to an account of our careers both On and Off the' Stage. That work, after running through seven editions - a success as gratifying as it was surprising to two authors unused to the pen - was allowed to go out of print. Since then we have both been asked so often whether we had written, or why we did not write, our reminiscences, that the idea occurred to us of comprising within a single book the whole of our memories of sixty years. This is our apology for re-telling in a different way, and with that greater freedom which is born of the lapse of time, things which happened in the first half of that long period. In my task of compiling these memoirs I have been greatly aided by the words of my wife, which I have used wherever able to do so, and by the fact that every page has had the benefit of her help and counsel. For the egotism displayed in the following story I offer no excuse. Egotism is inseparable from autobiography.
