Book Reminiscences Of The Civil War Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Reminiscences Of The Civil War Illustrated Edition written by General John B. Gordon and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few generals of the Confederate States Army had such a glittering career as John Brown Gordon, although without any formal military training he rose from captain of a company of Georgia mountineers to the rank of Major-General. He was described by the Robert E. Lee as one of his finest commanders and that his actions were “characterized by splendid audacity”. He was distinguished in many the early battles of the Army of North Viginia; First Bull Run, Malvern Hill; holding the vital “Bloody Lane” at Antietam he was shot five times as he encouraged his men. After a period of recuperation he plunged back into the fray and won further laurels at battles at Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House and the final surrender at Appomattox. His memoirs are justly famous and are an acclaimed classic. “For many years I have been urged to place on record my reminiscences of the war between the States. In undertaking the task now, it is not my purpose to attempt a comprehensive description of that great struggle, nor an elaborate analysis of the momentous interests and issues involved. The time may not have arrived for a full and fair history of that most interesting period in the Republic’s life. The man capable of writing it with entire justice to both sides is perhaps yet unborn. ... I have also recorded in this volume a large number of those characteristic and thrilling incidents which illustrate a unique and hitherto unwritten phase of the war, the story of which should not be lost, because it is luminous with the noblest lessons. Many of these incidents came under my own observation”--Introduction.

Book excerpt: "For many years I have been urged to place on record my reminiscences of the war between the States. In undertaking the task now, it is not my purpose to attempt a comprehensive description of that great struggle, nor an elaborate analysis of the momentous interests and issues involved. The time may not have arrived for a full and fair history of that most interesting period in the Republic's life. The man capable of writing it with entire justice to both sides is perhaps yet unborn. He may appear, however, at a future day, fully equipped for the great work. If endowed with the requisite breadth and clearness of view, with inflexible mental integrity and absolute freedom from all bias, he will produce the most instructive and thrilling record in the world's deathless annals, and cannot fail to make a contribution of measureless value to the American people and to the cause of free government throughout the world ... I have also recorded in this volume a large number of those characteristic and thrilling incidents which illustrate a unique and hitherto unwritten phase of the war, the story of which should not be lost, because it is luminous with the noblest lessons. Excerpt: ... of the hill, where we piled it up, and each morning took a portion of it to fill our load. On account of the distance from home and the severity of the winter, I boarded near my work with a farmer's family by the name of Crawford. The family consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Crawford, elderly people, and three grown sons, one of whom was married. We called his wife "Chatty." Mrs. Crawford was in poor health and Chatty took charge of the house. She was a little body, but what she lacked in size, she made up in energy. She was a fine cook and housekeeper. Mrs. Crawford, whom we called "Grandma," occupied a large room on the first floor, in which the old-fashioned fireplace had been allowed to remain. Another boarder with us that winter, was a young man named Foster Seaman, a fine singer. In the evenings, seated before the open fireplace in Grandma's room, he would entertain us for an hour while we were getting thawed out.
