Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Early Operations of the Burmese War: Addressed to the Editor of the United Service Journal On its publication, remarks were made by various persons, and angry complaints by the navy I, for one, spoke to Colonel Snodgrass on the subject; and his answer was, That his work was a journal of Sir Archibald Campbell's army; that he did not understand naval tactics and that he thought some naval man had better publish an account of their proceedings adding, however, that the naval force employed was comparatively small and, you know that, at one time, you were the only naval officer doing duty at Rangoon. This was all well and true, on the part of the Colonel but, the public having read and approved his work, it was scarcely probable that they would read and approve all, or any, of the nine hundred and ninety-nine accounts that might follow it; and, consequently, the naval man, whoever he might be, that should undertake the task, would have an additional difficulty to overcome to obtain a hearing. Book Our Burmese Wars and Relations with Burm

Download or read book Our Burmese Wars and Relations with Burm written by W. F. B Laurie and published by . This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an updated expansion of the author s earlier memoir of the two Burmese Wars - in the second of which he served. Remarking that at the time of writing (1879) the general British population had little knowledge of their Empire s recently acquired Burmese domains, the author includes remarks and descriptions of the country and its customs as well as his purely military narrative. The first Burmese war, claims the author, was no aggressive conquest but a pre-emptive campaign fought to defend Bengal from Burmese invasion, while the British annexation of Burmese territory in the second war denied the fiends engaged in the Indian Mutiny of 1857 the opportunity of using Burma as a base.

Book A Daughter s Memoir of Burma

Download or read book A Daughter s Memoir of Burma written by Wendy Law-Yone and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wendy Law-Yone was just fifteen when Burma's military staged a coup and overthrew the civilian government in 1962. The daughter of Ed Law-Yone, the daredevil founder and chief editor of The Nation, Burma's leading postwar English-language newspaper, she experienced firsthand the perils and promises of a newly independent Burma. On the eve of Wendy's studies abroad, Ed Law-Yone was arrested and The Nation shut down. Wendy herself was briefly imprisoned. After his release, Ed fled to Thailand with his family, where he formed a government-in-exile and tried, unsuccessfully, to foment a revolution. Exiled to America with his wife and children, Ed never gave up hope that Burma would one day adopt a new democratic government. Though he died disappointed, he left in his daughter's care an illuminating trove of papers documenting the experiences of an eccentric, ambitious, humorous, and determined patriot, vividly recounting the realities of colonial rule, Japanese occupation, postwar reconstruction, and military dictatorship. This memoir tells the twin histories of Law-Yone's kin and his country, a nation whose vicissitudes continue to intrigue the world.
