Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Saratoga and Ballston The circumstances that led to the preparation of the following sketches, which appeared originally in the Daily Saratogian, cannot perhaps be better stated than by quoting an extract from the first article of the series in that paper, under date of June 10, 1874: "I have been frequently requested to prepare a series of sketches of 'Saratoga in ye Olden Time by people who have been kind enough to say that, from my having been acquainted from boyhood with many octogenarians who have now passed away, I could give a number of reminiscences gathered from those sources, which must prove of peculiar interest to the present generation of Saratogians. This may or may not be so. At any rate, I now purpose to write a series of weekly sketches, extending perhaps through six months, in which I shall endeavor to recall the interesting memories that cluster around the name of Saratoga. Milton's only village, Ballston Spa, with the attraction of its rare mineral springs, was once among the country's most popular tourist destinations. One of the largest and most elegant hotels in the world, the Sans Souci, vied with a host of others for the patronage of thousands of travelers who made the pilgrimage each summer to partake in the "healing waters." When the tourist trade faded, it was replaced by a massive expansion of industry that was situated along the town's waterways. Among the most significant of these concerns were the mills of the "Paper Bag King" George West, Isaiah Blood's ax and scythe works, and the mammoth tannery of Samuel Haight. Today, its proximity to the state capital and other cities makes the town an increasingly popular residential area, complemented by a quaint and bustling business district in Ballston Spa.

Book excerpt: Spa resorts were a favoured destination for affluent seekers after health and comfortable leisure in opulent surroundings from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, although in the railway age they began to suffer from competition from new fashions in leisure and tourism, especially the seaside holiday. During their heyday the leading spa resorts became hotbeds of political and diplomatic intrigue, and gathering-points for high society. As such, they also became important businesses, and distinctive, carefully-managed urban environments. ‘Taking the waters’ at a mineral springs resort fell into eclipse over much of the Western world in the mid-twentieth century, only to revive in more diffuse guise as ‘health and wellness tourism’ in the new millennium. This book examines an important body of practices and experiences from the perspectives of health, pleasure, conspicuous consumption and display, urban governance, culture and politics across a quarter of a millennium, drawing its examples not only from the British Isles, France, Spain and Central Europe, but also from the United States and Australia.
