Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Pioneer Days in the West Perhaps I was surprised to find everything scrupulously clean and one had no reservation on that score. These Metis -were big powerful men and excellent axe men though the French Canadian foremen complained that they 'had a tendency, frequently, to take some days off. They used a good many words that were Cree and strangely enough, some that a Kildonan man told me were Gaelic. Their forebears worked for the Hudson's Bay Company for many generations and as most of the company men were Highland Scotsmen this was not so surprising. Atikokan, in 1903 was an important divisional point on what was then the main line of the c.n.r. There appeared to be no agricultural land in the district which consisted of swamp, rock and tundra. The hamlet was made up of a hotel, wholesale liquor store, general store and roundhouse with but one frame house and a number of shacks. Train and engine crews lived either at Rainy River or Port Arthur. There was but one eating place and the guests were served at a long table and at meal-time made up a family party. As was the general custom: at that time the food was not served directly but large bowls and platters were passed around and the boarders helped themselves. A general favorite in the district was an interesting and humourous character, Captain Wood, a civil war veteran and a mining engineer who still carried a Confederate bullet in his shoulder. Seated at breakfast with the Captain on the morning of my arrival I enquired as to the contents of a large bowl on the table. That, my friend, replied the Captain, is Atikokan antelope. The general round of smiles made me curious until I found it was rabbit hash. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Pioneer Life This is not much of a book. But I want you to buy this book, and! Read it. It is a simple story, told in a simple way, of the simple pioneer life as it was lived in the log-cabin homes, on the western frontier, in the long, long ago. And it is every whit true. Freck, the writer, is an old pioneer, one of the com mon people; and the story is written about the common people, and it is written for the common people. And you remember that Abraham Lincoln said, God loves the common people; this is why He made so many of them. Now, be good to yourself, and buy and read this book. This is all I have to say. Good-bye. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Pioneer It is with this end in view, to preserve the life of the old days in its many colors, that these recollections are penned. There was more to this life than has been touched by the parlor romancers or makers of moving-picture films. Per haps some day these memories may serve to illumine the historian delving in the human records of the past. And perhaps, also, and this is the author's dearest wish, they may inspire young readers to hold to the hardy traditions of the 'fifties and to keep this spirit alive in a country des tined soon to be densely peopled with newcomers from the long-settled parts of the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Days The stories of early frontier life here pre sented, which are taken from the early his tories of the West and from lives of the frontiersmen and pioneers written by con temporaries and eye-witnesses, introduce the reader to an intimate acquaintance with the Indian races of the country which lies east of the Rocky Mountains. The savage warrior and hunter is presented, stripped of all the decorations with which writers of fiction have dressed him. He is seen in his ferocity and gentleness, in his rascality and nobility, in his boyhood, manhood and old age, and in his wis dom and ignognce. The accuracy and truth of these descriptions of the life and adventures of the period cannot be questioned, and they give us a vivid and inspiring picture of the con ditions under which part of our country was opened up for civilization. The farmers had large ranches with immense flocks of cattle and sheep, and plenty of slaves to take care of them. In some places the wolves were so plentiful in the mountains that they had to gather the cattle in large flocks in the evening and kindle fires at certain distances, with slaves keeping up the fires all night to save the cattle from the wolves. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Pioneer in the Rock River Country One day I saw a big Indian shake her by the shoulder be cause she wouldn' t give him bread. She was ironing at the time and threatened him with a hot flat iron till he hurried out. Another came in one warm summer afternoon, shut the door behind him, and leaned against it, glowering at her. For once she was thoroughly frightened. He had with him a tomahawk, having a hollow handle and head, that could be used as a pipe. However, her wits did not desert her. Seeing the cat sleeping peacefully in the corner, she cried, How did that cat get in here! And catching up the broom she chased pussy around till she reached the door, when seizing the heavy iron latch she pulled it wide open, sending Mr. Indian into the middle of the room; she then pushed the door back against the wall and set a chair against it. The Indian stood still for a min ute, then uttered a grunt and took himself off, probably think ing she was too dangerous a person for him to attempt to bully. The Indians used to offer for sale venison, fish, and maple sugar, but the line was always drawn on the latter, for it was commonly reported that they strained the sap through their blankets. And you should have seen their blankets! About 1846 a company of civilized Oneidas, some of whom my father had known in the East, camped near by and manufactured a large number of handsome and serviceable baskets. From wild berries they would make dyes that never faded, and print them on the baskets with stamps cut from potatoes. Some of their designs were quite artistic. A small basket and a rat tle which they gave my year-old sister showed their good will. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This junction of the three rivers, establishing the head of navigation, became known in early times as the Three Forks, or more commonly, as the mouth of the Ver digris. In the days when river navigation played such a tremendously important part in the life of this west ern country, the mouth of the Verdigris maintained for many years an importance that long since has passed away and been forgotten. As a trading center and theatre of military and more peaceful operations in the winning of this country, it was second to none west of the Mississippi. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Pioneer I was born in Bartow County, Georgia, on the 22md day of January, 1829. Sometime during my in fancy, and at a period too early to be remembered, my father and his family moved to East Tennessee, where we lived until I was ten years old. About this time re ports concerning the Platte Purchase and its splendid farming land began to reach us. I do not now recall the exact channel through which these reports came, but I think some of our relatives had gone there and had written back urging us to come. My father final ly yielded and in the spring of 1839 sold his Tennessee farm and prepared for the long journey overland. I was old enough at the time to take some note of what passed, and I remember that my father received four thousand dollars for his land in Indiana shin plas ters. I recall also the preparations that were made for the journey - the outfitting of the wagons, gathering the stock together, and most important of all, the part assigned to me. I was provided with a pony, saddle and bridle and given charge of a herd of loose cattle and horses. We had a rude camp outfit and car ried along with us all the household plunder with which we expected to start life in the new country. As may be well imagined, there was not a great deal of it, although the family was large. In those days the peo ple had to be satisfied with the barest necessities. Some idea of the extent of this part of my father's worldly property may be given by saying that the entire outfit, including camp equipment, was loaded into two wagons. I shall never forget the morning we started. Everything had been loaded the day before, ex cept the articles necessary to the sojourn over night. We were up bright and early, had breakfast in little better than camp style, and were off before sun up. My father, mother, and the younger children took the first wagon, and one of my brothers and my sisters the second. I was upon my pony and in my glory. The wagons moved forward and I rounded up the cattle and horses and forced them along after the wagons. I was too young to feel any tender sentiment toward the old home or to appreciate the fact that I was leav ing it forever, but I remember that my father and mother often looked back, and as we passed over the hill out of sight, I saw them turn and wave a long farewell. Many times since I have thought of that scene and have learned to know full well its meaning to my father and mother. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Gentle Pioneer, Being the Story of the Early Days in the New West T was a grave little company which sat around the big fireplace of the Kennedy farm-house one night in March. Outside the wind howled and blustered, and even though a huge log fire Shot its flames in fine fashion up the wide Chimney, there was necessity for sand-bags at the door, and for heavy homespun curtains at the windows to keep out the insistent draughts which would make their way through every Chink and cranny. The younger children cuddled close together on the hearth, their mother from time to time looking up from her work to watch them thoughtfully; their father, Silent and moody, gazed into the snapping fire, while Agnes herself, old enough to understand better than her brothers and Sisters the cause of the unusual serious ness, paused more than once in her task of knitting to steal a glance at her parents.
