The Etonian trusts that it will require no comments from him to recommend his liter ary bantling to the perusal of the public, inde pendent Of those that are Etonians, when they advert to the distinguished patronage under which his work makes its appearance; that of the most excellent and royal consort of one of our late noble Princes. To Englishmen the house of Hanover is dear; and may the same affection ever flow towards those who are en grafted on its illustrious stock. The author de tests flattery but he cannot fail from remark ing in this place, that the exalted personage, who so kindly condescends to permit the dedi cation of this work to her, has ever been, like her great prototype Queen Charlotte, a pattern. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Eton (Keate's Time) My five brothers, I know, agree with me as to how much of their happiness in after-life they owe to Old Eton and all its freemasonry and friendship in every clime and in every place. My sixth brother - who was preparing for Eton (not that it wanted much preparation in those days), and who missed going there by having an appointment Offered at Woolwich (then a matter of nomination) though he passed a very successful career as R. H. A. And staff-college man and very young General, - always had one regret, in all the places where he served in various parts of the world in both hemispheres, that his mother who was left a widow, and his two elder brothers who were left his guardians, did not foresee the grand advantage which they themselves enjoyed, and send him to the old school, if it had been only for one half, in order to be enrolled in the 'few, the happy few, ' the band of brothers' who could call themselves Eton Fellows. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eton School Days: Or Recollections of an Etonian That one there, replied Burke, indicating a boy who had just taken a small cutty pipe, rather dirty than otherwise, out of his pocket, and was regarding it affectionately. He was handsome-looking, about thirteen; but there was a bad expression about his face. He dressed rather loudly; he had a blue frock-coat on, a pair Of shepherd's-plaid trousers of a very large check, and an Eton blue tie confined by a fine cameo ring. He was considered by his tutor one Of the idlest and worst boys in the school. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Memories of Eton Sixty Years Ago Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memories of Eton Sixty Years Ago Classic Reprint written by Arthur Campbell Ainger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Eton Sixty Years Ago No book of this kind can be written without mentioning names, and dwelling on the different methods and peculiarities of those mentioned. Almost without exception they have passed away, but their relations and friends remain. Every effort has been made that nothing should be here written which could reasonably give offence or cause annoyance to others. The illustrations are not intended to present a complete survey of Eton, but only a few views of buildings, etc., which no longer exist, or of landscapes no longer visible as formerly, with portraits of some of the masters mentioned in the text. The rhymes inserted here and there are also in the nature of illustrations, depicting in some cases a phase of Eton life which has passed away. They need not be taken too seriously. Book Eton Classic Reprint

Download or read book Eton Classic Reprint written by A. Clutton-Brock and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eton Sir Henry Maxwell Lyte's "History of Eton College" is the standard work on the subject, and my obligations to it are too general to be acknowledged in detail. I am also indebted to Mr. Sterry's "Annals of Eton College," a delightful book containing many interesting facts not to be found elsewhere; to Messrs. Willis and Clark's "Architectural History of the University of Cambridge;" to Mr. Leach's "History of Winchester College," and to the Rev. F. St. John Thackeray's interesting memoir of Dr. Hawtrey. It is the object of the books contained in this series to give an account of the present condition of the schools of which they treat. It has therefore been necessary to compress the history of those schools into as small a compass as possible. It has been difficult to do this in the case of Eton, where the history is both long and full of interesting details, and I am conscious that much is omitted in the earlier chapters of this book which readers might expect to find there. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collegers V. Oppidans: A Reminiscence of Eton Life Lock-up (subarea?) boat. The lock-up boat is a private skiff chartered for the boating-season at a cost of 51. It is distinguished from the chance boat in that the subscriber to the latter pays 21. Ton, but must take his chance of any boat that happens to be unhired at the time he wants to row or scull, and has not the exclusive right to any particular boat. The cost of a lock-up, may be shared by two friends, that of a chance boat cannot be. The word lock up, taken in another sense, indicates the hour at which boys must be back to their tutors' houses of an evening. This hour varies according to the season - the extremes being pm. At midsummer, and 5 pm. During November and December. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Eton and Etonians, Including My Life at Eton, 1854-1863, and Some Reminiscences of Subsequent Cricket, 1864-1874 Since the foundation of the Eton College Chronicle in 1863, the results of the principal competitions, matches, and sports which occur every year have been duly recorded, and are accessible to every one, but the corresponding records of the years preceding 1863 are curiously difficult to obtain in many cases. I have, therefore, made a point of giving the names of the principal performers and winners in the athletic world, as I believe these will be interesting to many old Etonians. Download or read book Recollections of an Eton Colleger written by C. H. M. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of an Eton Colleger: 1898 1902 During the few years that I had the honour of enjoying the bounty of King Henry the Sixth as a Colleger of Eton, I met many people, wholly or partially ignorant of Eton life and its ways, who were most anxious to know how we got on in College. They asked many questions, and I gathered from their general tenor that the world at large, or such part of it as was at all interested in Eton, believed that the Collegers were badly housed, badly fed, and generally had a most rotten time of it, if I may use schoolboy slang. Looking back on my school-time, I can say with perfect sincerity that, far from being badly housed and badly provided for, I have never spent such happy years as those with Mother Eton in the classic shades of College. Book Memoirs of Eminent Etonians Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memoirs of Eminent Etonians Classic Reprint written by Edward Creasy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Eminent Etonians I have endeavoured to prepare and collect in this volume a series of memoirs of the most eminent men who have been connected with Eton, by education or office, during the four centuries that have elapsed since the foundation of the College to the present time. The project is one which Rawlinson and many others have, in the course of the last eighty years, undertaken and announced, but it has never before been completed. It is, indeed, more difficult than it would appear at first sight. The "Alumni Etonenses" of Harwood, the "Registrum Regale" of the Rev. G. H. Dupuis, and Allen's Manuscripts, which are preserved in Eton College Library, make it easy to ascertain all the eminent Etonians who have been educated on the foundation, and who afterwards became members of the sister foundation of King's College, Cambridge.
