Book Reminiscences of Methodism in West Jersey Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reminiscences of Methodism in West Jersey Classic Reprint written by G. A. Raybold and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Methodism in West Jersey The title, Reminiscences, is more in ac cordance with the nature of this work, than either that of Annals, History, or Sketches; for the reason that our collection of facts is gathered chiefly from the remembrances of the aged; and presents, by way of memento, me moirs, either printed in the Minutes long ago, or gathered from the sources referred to, of those preachers and others who may be men tioned. To confirm our souls in the love of God and truth, in the love of Methodism and its institutions; to edify in righteousness all who may read; is a summary of our motives in gathering, and presenting to the church and the world these Reminiscences of Methodism. Download or read book Reminiscences of Early Methodism in Indiana written by John C. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Early Methodism in Indiana: Including Sketches of Various Prominent Ministers, Together With Narratives of Women Eminent for Piety, Poetry and Song The heroic age of the Methodist Episcopal Church is not ended. The fire still glows on her altars; zeal still flames in her heart. The men who traveled the primeval forests of the West by blazed trees, forded or swam, as occasion required, the numerous and unbridged streams, who often slept under the friendly woods, faring hard and working harder - these heroes of a rough time were the fathers of noble sons. If the sires were heroic, their children are not cowardly. If the fathers laid the foundations, their sons rear the superstructure. The sublime purpose which inaugurated the Methodistic movement still pushes the conquering march of her sacramental host. Her theology maintains its integrity; her worship retains its simplicity; her methods are more direct and efficient than those of any other church; her book of discipline makes no concession to popular sin. She stands as unshaken and unaltered among the opinions and customs of these changeful times as Gibraltar in the midst of the changeful waters. Book Lost Chapters Recovered From the Early History of American Methodism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lost Chapters Recovered From the Early History of American Methodism Classic Reprint written by Joseph Beaumont Wakeley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lost Chapters Recovered From the Early History of American Methodism The old book sheds light upon that part of our history where all before was dark as a starless midnight. It is the first record of the trustees and stewards of the old J ohn-street Church. It is a model book, both on account of its neatness and exactness. They were very particular in those days to re cord everything, small and great. What a reproof to the care less manner in which many church records are now kept. The old book is the basis of the work entitled, Lost Chapters Recovered. We do not publish all that it con tains, but make extracts from year to year, from the first to the conclusion. This work is something more than a mere local history. It describes the early and great men of Methodism, in whom the great Methodist family have a common interest. To make the chapters as complete as possible, I have not only followed the old book, but availed myself of other material that enriches the volume. Does the reader inquire where this old book has been? I answer, I cannot tell, only it has been lost for over half a century, and very recently discovered. The oldest ministers now in new-york and the oldest trustees had never seen the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Up from Methodism

Download or read book Up from Methodism written by Herbert Asbury and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2003-12-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1926, while a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune, Herbert Asbury, great-great-nephew of Francis Asbury, the first American Bishop of the Methodist Church, submitted a chapter of his profane work-in-progress, an almost spiteful memoir of his boyhood in the Ozark town of Farmington, Missouri, to H.L Mencken's American Mercury magazine. Mencken published "Hatrack," the story of the town's prostitute, in the April issue. The Mercury was then banned in Boston at the incitement of J. Frank Chase, the head of the New England Watch and Ward Society, who called the story "bad, vile, raw stuff." Mencken was arrested selling the magazine to Chase on Boston Common in a stunt designed to provoke the free-speech trials that followed. In its restrained, but unrelenting attack on religious bigotry, irrationality, and hypocrisy, the book that was published soon thereafter retains its transgressive power today. Its taunting title, playing on Booker T. Washington's early-century bestseller Up from Slavery, gives an idea of what Asbury thought he had escaped. In his mocking humor and plain-spun language, used to evoke a bygone South suffocating in its fear of pleasure and damnation, Asbury reveals his debt to another son of Missouri, Mark Twain.
