Book Some Reminiscences of Three Quarters of a Century in India Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Reminiscences of Three-Quarters of a Century in India They would sharpen their swords under the impression that, the British having perpetrated so great a folly, at the bidding of a few Bengalee Baboos, the time had come for them to parcel out the country amongst them selves. Such would be their sentiments. Every sane and healthy-minded man will turn from the contempla tion of such a catastrophe, carrying with it dishonour and disgrace, with horror. From what source, it may be asked, would such a Government derive its strength Certainly not from the Army, where they would find no co-operation. With the civil European element withdrawn, the Army would be perfectly indifferent, chaos would reign all round, and all security of life and property would vanish. And this transformation is to be brought about at the bidding of a few faddists. A very healthy sign is beginning to be apparent in the awakening of the Government to the knowledge that drastic measures are called for as the only remedy for the troubles these would be reformers have brought about, and considering the vast interests at stake, it is to be hoped that the executive will continue to use their powers freely, in awarding severe punishment to all those who disturb the peace of the country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of an Indian Police Official It is to be regretted that old Anglo-Indian Officials, especially those whose lives have been passed in the interior as Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, and the like, do not more often employ the time, that we are told hangs so heavily on their hands after retirement, in jotting down some of their experiences for the benefit of the public in England, whose ideas of Official life in India, of the mode in which the country is governed, and of the idiosyncrasies of its people are still of the crudest. Especially as to the "seamy side" of the character of the mixed population could police officers contribute much that would not only be very good reading, but that would also prove highly instructive to their younger brethren just commencing life. General Hervey, who was for many years employed in the Department for the Suppression of Thuggee, has recently set an admirable example of what might be done in that direction. Download or read book Indian Home Memories Classic Reprint written by Henry Cotton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Home Memories I belong to an anglo-indian family, and am saturated with Indian traditions and associations. My father and grandfather were in the Indian Civil Service before me, and one of my sons is now a member of that Service. I was myself in the Civil Service for thirty-five years. My life in India was not devoid of incident; I have had the honour to rise to high office, and for four years after my retirement I sat as a Member of the House of Commons. I have made many friends, and, I am sorry to say, not a few enemies. In these pages, which are an unvarnished record, I submit my memoirs to the judgment of the public, and venture to hope that they may add to the number of my friends and not increase the ranks of those who are enrolled upon the other side.
