Book Reminscences of a Pioneer Missionary

Download or read book Reminscences of a Pioneer Missionary written by Chrysostom Verwyst and published by . This book was released on 1916 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of these memoirs, Chrysostom Verwyst, was an immigrant from North Brabant, Holland, who arrived in Boston in 1848 at the age of seven. His family had migrated with a group of fellow Catholics who had heard about the lands available in Wisconsin from a missionary priest returned home for a visit; however, the family was stranded in Boston without the funds to complete the trip. Almost half of Verwyst's narrative is taken up with the tale of how his family made its way to Hollandtown, Wisconsin, and carved a farm out of the woods and meadows of Brown County. These memoirs contain accounts of festive celebrations, costumes, agricultural practices, and local community life. Verwyst became a Catholic priest, attending seminary near Milwaukee during the Civil War. He served several Wisconsin communities during the second half of the nineteenth century: New London, Keshena, Hudson and environs, Seneca, Bayfield and La Pointe, Duluth and Superior. After joining the Franciscan order in 1883, Verwyst continued to attend communities in the Bayfield and Ashland areas. He also played a key role in establishing the Catholic Church as an active institutional presence in Washburn and Hurley. Following a three-year sojourn in St. Louis and Los Angeles, Verwyst returned to Ashland to attend missions in the Chippewa and St. Croix country. Finally, retiring to Bayfield, Verwyst spent his last years studying and composing works in the Chippewa language. The second part of his narrative examines not only his own life but the accomplishments of Catholic missionaries working among the diverse populations of northern Wisconsin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Pioneer: Or a Brief Memoir of the Life, Labours, and Death of John Stewart, (Man of Colour, ) Founder, Under God of the Mission Among the Wyandotts at Upper Sandusky, Ohio It will be readily seen by the reader, that this little memoir is not intended as the pan egyric of its pious subject; but merely as a record of interestingincidents, in which he had a prominent agency. Eulogy on his vir tues is not needed; for Heaven has awarded him a more substantial and enduring inheri tance. And though on earth his lot was one of poverty, persecution, and extreme adversity; the patience and resignation of Christianity bore him above the waves. And though un marked by a stone, his ashes obscurely re pose 1n the wilderness, we doubt not, his vir tues and his name stands registered in the Lamb's Book of everlasting life. Book The Pioneer Missionary

Download or read book The Pioneer Missionary written by J. G. Turner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pioneer Missionary: Life of the Rev. Nathaniel Turner, Missionary in New Zealand, Tonga, and Australia This book is not a history. If its scope and connecting links appear to give it somewhat of that character, it is but very partially, and only incidentally. The book purports simply to be the Life of a godly and useful man. The writer's inducements to publish it were, First, That a large circle of relatives and friends might have preserved to them in permanent form authentic reminiscences of one they honoured and loved; Secondly, That the story of his labours might serve in some degree to encourage and stimulate the succeeding race of toilers in the same service; and, Thirdly, That as the biography would afford glimpses of the formative age of the Christian Church in the Southern World, - its peculiar trials and signal triumphs, - it might awaken or revive the missionary spirit, both in England and Australia, where Christian sympathies and benevolence are unduly restricted by local claims. Special acknowledgments are thankfully made to the Rev. James Buller, to whose correspondence the biographer is indebted for portions of the material from which the chapters on New Zealand have been prepared. Book excerpt: 'Lest we Forget' is a modern edition of the memoirs and diaries of the first missionary couple to Ibadan in southern Nigeria, it was last published in 1871 under the title, "Seventeen years in the Yoruba country." The book chronicles the sacrifices of a missionary couple in that era (1840 - 1890). Starting with Anna's life in England shortly before her departure to Africa, the book goes on to describe the hardship and adventure of setting up home in Africa, the internecine wars that separated them from home for long periods of time and the challenges of church planting in the heathen culture. The book ends with her finally getting back to England to retire shortly after which the church in Nigeria commiserates with her husband on her home call. The purpose of the book is to rekindle the flame of missionary sacrifice in today's generation of Christians.
