Book Sketches of the Campaign in Northern Mexico

Download or read book Sketches of the Campaign in Northern Mexico written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Campaign in Northern Mexico: In Eighteen Hundred Forty-Six and Seven If the time has not yet come for the grave and impartial summing up by the historian, of that interesting event - the Mexican war - it is believed that a sufficiently remote period has arrived for the publication of those Notes and Memoirs which have been prepared, and are designed, not so much to gratify any existing popular interest, as to "serve the cause of History." The writer of the following pages is aware that his subject lacks the charm of novelty. A strong and experienced corps of intelligent officers and literary camp-followers, armed cap-a-pie for the campaign, have taken the field before him. Still, as the same landscape or picture, when observed from different points of view, will not unseldom present new and attractive features; the reader may perhaps discover in these Sketches, some lights and shadows to which his attention has not heretofore been directed. The history of the First Regiment of Ohio volunteers (incorporated with the narrative) may be interesting to many of his fellow-citizens; and his account of some of the leading events of the war, he trusts, will not be altogether valueless. An untrained volunteer in authorship as in arms, the writer - though not indifferent to, nor ungrateful for the approbation of others, - has been more intent upon the performance of his duty, than solicitous for the favorable opinion of his readers. Download or read book Mexico in Peace and War Classic Reprint written by Thomas H. Russell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico in Peace and War It was never intended that "Mexico in Peace and War" should be limited in scope to a mere "war book," although many months ago it was thought that war was imminent, and quite probable, before a solution of existing difficulties could be brought about, or before this volume could go to press. For several years the eyes of the civilized world have been directed toward Mexico because of the revolution of the masses against certain classes which had been fiercely waged. The American public seemed eager for details of this civil war, and such details were furnished by the daily press. Then came a demand for all kinds of information about Mexico. What seemed necessary to the situation was a popular, readable book that would embrace all the facts concerning this land of conquest, revolution and treasure. Such a history must necessarily be authentic and comprehensive. It was part of the plan that should war actually take place between the United States and Mexico ere its publication, allowance would be made in this history for the incidents and causes leading up to and into the beginning of such a war. In the event of conflict it would be only reasonable to expect that whether or not the opposing forces should be in actual conflict, or in a position of armed belligerency pending peaceful settlement, the ultimate solution would be long drawn out; and to postpone the volume for a "last word" of war developments would be to deprive the public of an immense fund of information never before issued in popular form. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War of the Rebellion, and of the Mexican War In the summer of 1861 three young patriot officers found themselves fellow-captives of war within the gloomy walls of the old tobacco-warehouse. In Richmond. One of these, Colonel J. R. Hurd, then Captain, was a Ken tuckian, faithful found among many faithless. The love of adventure had lured him in very early years from his home, and, reveling in the wild and semi-barbaric life of a frontiersman, he had become inured to hardship, peril and self-reliance. As we have mentioned, Colonels Hurd and Raynor had been companions and friends in childhood. They now became inseparable. Through a friend ly guard they obtained a few yards of calico, and some cotton and thread, with which they made a quilt, which, with a block of wood for their pillow, constituted their only bed. Mr. Murphy was regarded as a surgeon by the rebels, and was consequently allowed, under close surveillance, to visit the hospitals where our wounded were languishings He was thus enabled to con tribute very much not only to their relief, but_to the aid of his suffering com panions in the warehouse. In one of these hospitals he found Mrs. Major General Ricketts, who had heroically consented to become a prisoner-of - war that she might attend upon her wounded husband. This noble woman moved through the Sad wards of that hospital at Richmond an angel of mercy, an other Florence Nightingale, sharing the misery she attempted to alleviate. Officers and soldiers alike were cheered by her tender hand\ and her sympa thizing heart. She was obliged, writes Mr. Murphy, to quarter in the same room with her husband and some six other officers, with only a small shawl used as a screen to shield her from observation. Excerpt: ... as it suited the peculiar views of the commander-in-chief. When Gen. Lane made his report he was not aware that Colonel Bowles had ordered the retreat, consequently he did not justify the act of retreating, but he stated the facts so far as they came to his knowledge. One important fact embodied in General Lane's report was, that the retreating troops rallied, with the exception of a few, and fought like veterans--a fact which was due to the second regiment, and which has not only been withheld, but contradicted by the commander-in-chief, while the author of the article in the Delta, with all his misrepresentation, had the magnanimity to state that the Indianians "subsequently rallied, and fully reinstated themselves by the most gallant and effective fighting." Gen. Lane made no attempt to screen the few who left the field and did not return, but was particular to draw a distinction so that all who rallied and fought until the action was closed, should not suffer for the conduct of the unfaithful. Gen. Lane says: "The 2d regiment of my command which opened the battle on the plain, in such gallant sty le, deserves a passing remark. I shall attempt to make no apology for their retreat i for it was their duty to stand or die to the last man until they received orders to retire; but I desire to call your attention to one fact connected with the affair. They remained in their position in line, receiving the fire of 3,000 or 4,000 infantry in front, exposed at the same time on the left flank to a most desperate raking fire from the enemy's battery, posted within point blank shot, until they had deliberately discharged twenty rounds of cartridges at the enemy. "Some excuse may be framed for those who retired for a few...

Richardson: A Private Soldier in the Campaign of New and Old Mexico, Under the Command of Colonel Doniphan of Missouri Win - At day-light this morning our train was under way, arrived in town for breakfast, after which our Captain marched us all over the city. It is a beautiful inland place of 1000 inhabitants. Fifteen miles further on we met our first Lieutenant, just from the Fort. He told us to hurry on and get mustered into service before the other companies should crowd in. We hurried accordingly and reached Platt City at sun-set. I was fatigued and hungry, and went into the hotel to get my supper; when I came out, I found our third Lieutenant had come up with the rest of the men, and were ready to start for the ferry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Mexico: And the Battle of Buena Vista, Feb; 22 and 23, 1847 States, at Bardstown Ky., with the son of Henry Clay, a lieut.-colonel of Gen. Wool's forces at the time that command passed through Parras, en route to Saltillo The true and cor dial spanish-mexican embrace was given to the colonel by Don Manuel, and a hearty welcome to our troops and our officers could hardly restrain him from turning the whole army into his wine-cellars in his excess of hospitable feeling He, with many of the best Mexicans, had an intense hatred of the tyranny of Santa Ana, and held himself ready for resistance to him. As instances of the wealth at com mand of these ricos in that country, I would mention, that we were told of one gentleman, who, when Santa Ana's army started from San Luis to cross the arid desert to attack us, had presented five thousand mules to that general to transport water for the troops; and of another, who had mounted a whole regiment of lancers on horses of one color, and that no common color for that animal, nan keen, as a present to his country.
