Book Gettysburg July2 The Ebb and Flow of Battle

Download or read book Gettysburg July2 The Ebb and Flow of Battle written by James Woods and published by James Woods. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of "Gettysburg, July 2: The Ebb and Flow of Battle" reconstructs the 2nd Day's battle at Gettysburg and follows the troop movements of the two opposing armies as it has never before been attempted. The clock starts running at 12:01 a.m. and stops at midnight. In between those hours 164 full page color maps and accompanying text (with an additional 9 detailed maps) present the reader with a chronological progression of the battle that, at times, slows the action down to minute-by-minute increments as the movements of each Union and Confederate regiment and battery is tracked. Thus the fight for the Peach Orchard, Wheatfield, Little Round Top, East Cemetery and Culp's Hill is depicted in such a way as to bring those actions into context with activity occurring on other parts of the field. Fully illustrated, the author has drawn from the Official Reports, regimental histories, diaries, and numerous other sources to enliven and support the narrative. "A must-have reference tool for anyone wishing to understand the second day at Gettysburg", "Invaluable" and a "Masterful book" according to The Civil War News book reviewer.

Book Stand to It and Give Them Hell

Download or read book Stand to It and Give Them Hell written by John Michael Priest and published by Savas Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-19 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] stirring narrative of the common soldier’s experiences on the southern end of the battlefield on the second day of fighting at Gettysburg.” —Civil War News “Stand to It and Give Them Hell” chronicles the Gettysburg fighting from Cemetery Ridge to Little Round Top on July 2, 1863, through the letters, memoirs, diaries, and postwar recollections of the men from both armies who struggled to control that “hallowed ground.” John Michael Priest, dubbed the “Ernie Pyle” of the Civil War soldier by legendary historian Edwin C. Bearss, wrote this book to help readers understand and experience, as closely as possible through the written word, the stress and terror of that fateful day in Pennsylvania. Nearly sixty detailed maps, mostly on the regimental level, illustrate the tremendous troop congestion in the Wheatfield, the Peach Orchard, and Devil’s Den. They accurately establish, by regiment or company, the extent of the Federal skirmish line from Ziegler’s Grove to the Slyder farm and portray the final Confederate push against the Codori farm and the center of Cemetery Ridge, which three Confederate divisions—in what is popularly known as Pickett’s Charge—would unsuccessfully attack on the final day of fighting. “‘Stand to It and Give Them Hell’ puts a human face on the second day of the nation’s epic Civil War battle . . . Mike Priest has taken a familiar story and somehow made it fresh and new. It is simply first-rate.” —Lance J. Herdegen, award-winning author of Union Soldiers in the American Civil War “Remarkable . . . Priest’s distinctive style is rife with anecdotes, many drawn from obscure diaries and letters, artfully stitched together in an original manner.” —David G. Martin, author of The Shiloh Campaign

Book A Bloody Day at Gaines Mill

Download or read book A Bloody Day at Gaines Mill written by Elmer R. Woodard, III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1862, two great armies met outside of Richmond in a series of battles that would determine the course of the Civil War. The Union had time, men and materiel on its side, while the Confederates had mobility, esprit de corps and aggressive leadership. Untried General Robert E. Lee was tasked with driving the Yankees from their almost impregnable positions to save Richmond and end the war. Lee planned to isolate part of the Union Army, crush it, and then destroy the only supply base the remaining Federals had. To do so, he had to move thousands of troops hundreds of miles, bringing multiple forces together with intricate timing, all without the Yankees or their spies finding out. The largest and most important of these battles occurred at Gaines' Mill.
