Book Impressions and Reminiscences Classic Reprint

Download or read book Impressions and Reminiscences Classic Reprint written by George Sand and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions and Reminiscences I acknowledge that, every evening, I am simple enough to record, in more or less words, the events of the day; and this I have done for twenty years. It does not follow, however, that this journal merits publication; and I doubt if even a few of its pages would be worth the trouble. On reviewing it, I am convinced that it would be principally interesting to myself, resembling, as it does, a journal from shipboard; for we live, for the most part, in the country; and this life is similar to that on a ship that is lying-to. Book The Gaze of the Listener

Download or read book The Gaze of the Listener written by Regula Hohl Trillini and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes representations of music in fiction, drama and poetry as well as normative texts in order to contribute to a gendered cultural history of domestic performance. From the Tudors to the First World War, playing the harpsichord or piano was an indispensable asset of any potential bride, and education manuals as well as courtship plots and love poems pay homage to this social function of music. The Gaze of the Listener charts the fundamental tension which determines all these texts: while music is warmly recommended in conduct books and provides standard metaphors like ?concord? and ?harmony? for virtuous love, a profound anxiety about its sensuous inarticulateness and implicit femininity unsettles all descriptions of actual music-making. Along with repressive plot lines, the privileging of visual perception over musical appreciation is the most telling indicator of this problem. The Gaze of the Listener is the first coherent account of this discourse and its historical continuity from the Elizabethan to the Edwardian period and provides a significant background for more narrowly focused research. Its uniquely wide database contextualizes numerous ?minor? works with classics without limiting itself to the fringe phenomenon of ?musician novels'. Including a fresh account of the novels of Jane Austen in their contemporary (rather than Victorian) context, the book is of interest to scholars and students in gender studies, English literature, cultural studies and musicology.

Book Musical Visitors to Britain

Download or read book Musical Visitors to Britain written by Peter Gordon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-07 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain has attracted many musical visitors to its shores. A varied and often eccentric collection of individuals, some were invited by royalty with musical tastes, some were refugees from religious or political oppression, some were spies, and others came to escape debt or even charges of murder. This book paints a broad picture of the changing nature of musical life in Britain over the centuries, through the eyes and ears of foreign musicians. After considering three of the eighteenth century’s greatest musical figures, the authors consider the rise of the celebrity composer in the nineteenth century, and go on to consider the influence of new forms of transport which allowed travel more freely from the Continent and the USA. Musical Visitors to Britain also charts the new opportunities presented by the opening of public halls, the growth of music festivals, and the regular influx of composers in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, ending with the impact of new musical forms such as jazz. As much a social as a musical history of Britain, this book will be of interest to anyone studying or working in these fields, as well as to general readers who want to discover more about our musical heritage.

Book The Invisible Woman

Download or read book The Invisible Woman written by Claire Tomalin and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Dickens and Nelly Ternan met in 1857; she was 18, a hard-working actress performing in his production of The Frozen Deep, and he was 45, the most lionized writer in England. Out of their meeting came a love affair that lasted thirteen years and destroyed Dickens’s marriage while effacing Nelly Ternan from the public record. In this remarkable work of biography and scholarly reconstruction, the acclaimed biographer of Mary Wollstonecraft, Thomas Hardy, Samuel Pepys and Jane Austen rescues Nelly from the shadows of history, not only returning the neglected actress to her rightful place, but also providing a compelling portrait of the great Victorian novelist himself. The result is a thrilling literary detective story and a deeply compassionate work that encompasses all those women who were exiled from the warm, well-lighted parlors of Victorian England.

Book The Companion to A Tale of Two Cities

Download or read book The Companion to A Tale of Two Cities written by Andrew Sanders and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1988, reveals the great care Dickens took with the planning and preparation of A Tale of Two Cities and its roots. It also explores the aspects of Dickens’s life, especially his interest in private theatricals, which contributed to the genesis of the novel. For the first time the historical sources for the very individual account of the French Revolution presented in A Tale of Two Cities are examined, and the book investigates the novelist’s debt to French and English eye-witnesses. This Companion identifies the multitude of allusions to what Dickens often regarded as the whims of eighteenth-century justice, religion, philosophy, fashion and society. It provides the modern reader with both fundamental sources of information and a fascinating account of the creation of a complex historical novel.
