Book Remembrances of the Pacific Electric Railway

Download or read book Remembrances of the Pacific Electric Railway written by John Whitmeyer and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the second monograph published by the late Jack Finn as part of his Pacific Electric Railway Historical Society historical documentation initiative. Featuring the late John L. "Jack" Whitmeyer, the monograph was created from interviews recorded on May 24, 1998. The focus of this volume is on the Pacific Electric's Eastern District, where Jack grew up and spent much of his train-watching youth. Also known as the "Inland" or "Orange Empire," the Eastern District remains one of the more interesting areas of the far-flung Pacific Electric interurban network. Jack Whitmeyer passed away July 5, 2012, surrounded by his surviving family members. He was much loved by all who knew him, and we honor his legacy by re-releasing this valuable monograph in softcover format for future generations of Pacific Electric fans to enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Los Angeles native born in 1932, author Alan K. Weeks is a lifelong railfan who was present at the end of the Pacific Electric and Los Angeles Railways, taking photos and building memories of the two historic lines that once crisscrossed Southern California. In this monograph, Weeks shares his memories with a new generation of railfans who actively work to preserve the heritage and legacy of the Pacific Electric and Los Angeles Railways. Alan is a retired Schedule Maker for the Southern California Rapid Transit District (RTD), predecessor to today's Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). He shares his photo collection on various websites, including our own PacificElectric.org. From the days when he would frequent the 5 Line with his childhood box camera to today, Alan Weeks is a Southern California treasure, without whose tireless documentary efforts, we would all be much poorer. We hope you enjoy his memories in Monograph No. 9 from the Pacific Electric Railway Historical Society.

Book Red Car Era an Album

Download or read book Red Car Era an Album written by Raphael F. Long and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-07-19 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first six decades of the Twentieth Century, Southern California boasted a comprehensive network of suburban electrically powered trains and trolleys. Known as the Pacific Electric, it was the world's largest interurban electric system. In their bright red livery, the Red Cars went everywhere. Lines extended along the beaches from Balboa to Santa Monica Canyon; from the cool snow covered alpine heights of Mount Lowe to the hot dry sandy desert of the San Fernando Valley; and from Los Angeles to the rural orange groves of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. At its peak, Pacific Electric operated 6,200 trains daily over 1,061 miles of track. Raphael Long was there at mid-century photographing the system during its final years under Pacific Electric management. Presented here are 230 images from Mr. Long's private collection. Red Car Era is filled with memories of a Southern California and Pacific Electric Railway that once was and will never be again.

Book Los Angeles Railway Yellow Cars

Download or read book Los Angeles Railway Yellow Cars written by Jim Walker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local rail-borne transit in Los Angeles began with horsecars in 1874, evolving with cable-powered and later electric-powered passenger vehicles. "Yellow Cars" describes the principal local transit system in and around Los Angeles in the first half of the 20th century. The canary-colored local streetcars formed the inner-neighborhood lines between a vast rail network of main lines known as the "interurban" system, primarily the Pacific Electric Railway "Red Cars," which spiderwebbed throughout Los Angeles County and into Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties. Rail tycoon Henry Edwards Huntington consolidated several independent lines into this great interurban empire. He sold it in 1910 to the Southern Pacific Railroad, keeping the Los Angeles Railway Yellow Cars. These evocative photographs illustrate travel during decades of change, progress, economic setbacks, war, and postwar retrenchment, when streetcar service was taken over by bus lines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST and REAL SIMPLE A profound and enchanting new novel from Booker Prize-longlisted author Niall Williams about the loves of our lives and the joys of reminiscing. You don't see rain stop, but you sense it. You sense something has changed in the frequency you've been living and you hear the quietness you thought was silence get quieter still, and you raise your head so your eyes can make sense of what your ears have already told you, which at first is only: something has changed. The rain is stopping. Nobody in the small, forgotten village of Faha remembers when it started; rain on the western seaboard was a condition of living. Now--just as Father Coffey proclaims the coming of electricity--it is stopping. Seventeen-year-old Noel Crowe is standing outside his grandparents' house shortly after the rain has stopped when he encounters Christy for the first time. Though he can't explain it, Noel knows right then: something has changed. This is the story of all that was to follow: Christy's long-lost love and why he had come to Faha, Noel's own experiences falling in and out of love, and the endlessly postponed arrival of electricity--a development that, once complete, would leave behind a world that had not changed for centuries. Niall Williams' latest novel is an intricately observed portrait of a community, its idiosyncrasies and its traditions, its paradoxes and its inanities, its failures and its triumphs. Luminous and otherworldly, and yet anchored with deep-running roots into the earthy and the everyday, This Is Happiness is about stories as the very stuff of life: the ways they make the texture and matter of our world, and the ways they write and rewrite us.
