Book The Follies of Richard Wadsworth

Download or read book The Follies of Richard Wadsworth written by Nick Mandaag and published by Drawn & Quarterly. This book was released on 2021-04-14 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dark, bizarre comedy where teachers push boundaries into preposterous places The Follies of Richard Wadsworth showcases Nick Maandag’s signature blend of deadpan satire and exceedingly unexpected plot twists. In “Night School,” a Modern Managerial Business Administration and Operational Leadership class goes awry when a fire alarm brings the Chief to school and he decides to stick around to teach the students a thing or two about leadership—and discipline. “The Follies of Richard Wadsworth” follows the title character, a professor of philosophy, as he begins work as a contract instructor at yet another university. When Wadsworth finds himself smoking reefer at his student’s party and discovers she works at a rub ’n’ tug, an off-kilter plan is hatched. And in “The Disciple,” a yarn about a coed Buddhist monastery, Brother Bananas, the resident gorilla, isn’t the only one having difficulty keeping his lust tucked safely under his robe. In Maandag’s hands—hands that love to toy with morally ambiguous characters and flirt with absurdity—troubled men make poor decisions, unlikable characters gain our sympathies through their very haplessness, and riotous laughs ensue. Maandag has achieved cult acclaim through his self-published and micro-published comics, and The Follies of Richard Wadsworth is his debut book. His mechanical, affectless characters and economical artwork efficiently deliver cringes, heightening the awkward silence and stillness of his hilarious comics.

Key figures include George Washington, Myles Standish, Daniel Morgan, Banastre Tarleton, Benjamin Franklin, Oliver Hazard Perry, Nathan Bedford Forest, Joseph Stilwell, Chiang Kai-shek, and George Marshall. The battles covered are the Plymouth Plantation militia attack on the Massachusett Tribe, the defeat of General Edward Braddock in the French and Indian War, Cowpens in the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812, the Fort Pillow Massacre in the Civil War, and the Battle for the Burma Road in World War II. In some cases, controversies remain, ranging from the depiction of Myles Standish on the Massachusetts flag to statues of Nathan Bedford Forrest. The book includes some never-reported information on the Battle for the Burma Road and the role of Pennsylvania militia in the War of 1812.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wadsworth Memorial, 1875: Containing an Account of the Proceedings of the Celebration of the Sixtieth Anniversary of the First Settlement of the Township of Wadsworth, Ohio It is the history of manhood left to develop itself in its normal method. Mind asserting and maintaining its eu premecy over matter. Man taking the dominion of the world, as originally intended by the Creator. Each within himself a lord. Walking erect in the conscious dignity of the divine image. Men, no longer mere creatures of cir cumstances, like the serfs and peasants of the Eastern Hem isphere, ground into nothingness between the upper and nether millstones of an artificial and false social system, but making their own circumstances. The ground swell of rising humanity breaking up the stagnant sea, and moving forward the rising wave of a new civilization, destined in its course to sweep the whole earth, and prepare a. New soil where a new order of things may spring up and grow. American history begins not with a nation, but with small communities. N o invading armies or barbarous hoards overrunning a land, but here and there a shipload of peaceful immigrants, coming to found, not find, a new or der of things. N ot to receive, but to make a country. The primitive settlement grows into the town, the town into the county, the county into the State, and the State into the nation. The social compact signed voluntarily in the cabin of the immigrant: ship, grows into the town ordinance, -the town ordinance into the county regulation, the county reg hlation into the State law, and the State laws into the national constitution. Thus a country, a people, and ana tion form themselves 011 the Creator's model - the germ the blade, the developing and matured fruit. Book Memory and Medieval Tomb

Download or read book Memory and Medieval Tomb written by Elizabeth Valdez Del Alamo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Reverent memorial for the dead was the inspiration for the production of a significant category of artworks during the Middle Ages - artworks aimed as much at the laity as at the clergy, and intended to maintain, symbolically, the presence of the dead. Memoria, the term that describes the formal, liturgical memory of the dead, also includes artworks intended to house and honour the deceased. This book explores the ways in which medieval Christians sought to memorialize the deceased: with tombs, cenotaphs, altars and other furnishings connected to a real or symbolic burial site. A dozen essays analyze strategies for commemoration from the 4th to the 15th century: the means by which human memory could be activated or manipulated through the interaction between monuments, their setting, and the visitor. Building upon from the growing body of literature on memory in the Middle Ages, the collection focuses on the tomb monument and its context as a complex to define what is to be remembered, to fix memory, and to facilitate recollection. Remembering depended upon the emotionally charged interaction between the visitor, the funerary monument, strategically placed images or inscriptions, the liturgy and its participants. Commemorative artworks may consolidate social bonds as well as individual memory, as put forth in this volume. Parallels are drawn between mnemonic devices utilized in the Middle Ages, the design of monuments and contemporary scientific research in cognitive neuropsychology. The papers were originally presented at the 1994 meetings of the College Art Association and the International Congresses of Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, and the University of Leeds, England, in 1995.
