Book excerpt: Award-winning SFF author Vonda N. McIntyre died April 1, 2019. The world lost a force of nature, a brilliant, kind, generous, fiercely talented artist. Friends, colleagues, admirers, fans all pay tribute to a radiant life here. McIntyre's oeuvre includes Dreamsnake (Hugo & Nebula award winner, '78), The Moon and the Sun (Nebula '98; & movie, awaiting release); plus stories, novelizations & tie-ins, including Star Trek novel, The Entropy Effect. She founded the Clarion West workshop and was a "fairy godmother" to 100s of students; a quiet, tireless feminist, Kentucky-born McIntyre moved to Seattle & became a life-long resident, as well as a prolific creator of crochet topoplogy; McIntyre also collaborated with Ursula K. Le Guin, and was a founding member of the Book View Cafe, an author-owned publishing cooperative. McIntyre both shaped and nurtured the SF/F community; as her friend Jane Hawkins has said "we shall not see her like again." All proceeds will benefit Clarion West Writers Workshop.
Download or read book Strange Novel Worlds written by Caroline-Isabelle Caron and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first James Blish novelizations of Star Trek episodes in 1967, close to 900 tie-in novels, anthologies, and omnibus editions have been published. Star Trek tie-in novels have had a significant influence on Western popular culture. The works of beloved science fiction authors have shaped the way fans understand Star Trek and its universe, and many stand as near equal builders of the Star Trek franchise, next to Gene Roddenberry, his producers, and the many creators of the later series. With such a vast and varied body of work, tie-in books form a rich and deep cultural phenomenon, the history and content of which are worthy of concerted study. Despite the enduring popularity of the franchise they are based on, no previous essay collection has ever focused on the numerous and widely diverse books of Star Trek tie-in novels. This collection does just that by examining the tie-in works as relevant literature. The essays primarily focus on tie-in books published from 1990 to 2022, and each author discusses the plot and context of separate novels while simultaneously exploring major themes such as canon vs. fanfiction and merits of the genre. The collection ends with an exploration of the continuity of this period of Star Trek as it stands following a narrative conclusion announced in 2021.
Download or read book Little Sisters and Other Stories written by Vonda N. McIntyre and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected short stories by one of the most acclaimed voices in post-war US American science fiction. This volume presents a selection of short fiction by Vonda Neel McIntyre (1948–2019), one of the most acclaimed writers of post-war US American science fiction, and the winner of multiple awards for both novels and short fiction. These stories, which span the whole of McIntyre’s career, show the broad range of her interests and her voice, taking us from bleak dystopian worlds on the verge of environmental collapse to baroque intergalactic civilizations populated by genetically modified humans, from cries for freedom to sharp-eyed satire to meditations on aging. Throughout run her distinctive themes of gender and power dynamics, human and species diversity, and a pragmatic utopianism that emphasises our mutual dependency. The stories included in the volume are: "Breaking Point," "Thanatos," "Shadows, Moving," "Elfleda," "A Story for Eilonwy," "Malheur Maar," "The Adventure of the Field Theorems," "Little Faces", "Little Sisters," and "XYY" (previously unpublished).
Download or read book Night Shift written by Eileen Gunn and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2022-08-16 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wry, dark humor burnishes visionary SF in these often prophetic, sometimes troubling, but always fascinating tales that combine and masterfully conflate the disparate worlds of corporate tech and literary art. “After the Thaw” is a hi-tech take on an ancient idea: immortality. “Terrible Trudy on the Lam” based on actual events, is a modern fable about a zoo escape, a private eye, a vaudeville act and keeping your mouth shut. “Night Shift at NanoGobblers,” written for a NASA website, is about asteroid-altering AIs and their world-weary earthbound handlers. “Transitions” deals with jet lag when your flight is decades late. Gunn’s long-awaited third collection is rounded out by incisive and affectionate portraits of her SF colleagues, mentors, and friends, beginning with Ursula Le Guin. All illuminated of course by our artfully intimate interview.

This time, there are still secrets, issues and their own specialized “brands” of drama, but it does seem like they are being intentional about getting their act together…especially Vonda. After years of enduring basically every kind of abuse you can think of from her lawyer husband Trent, finally life is coming together for her—peace of mind and some real success of her own are well on their way. Due to Trent’s controlling attitude and out-of-control appetite for women, his narcissistic approach to both his career and his marriage are finally costing him in ways he didn’t see coming—and Vonda’s friends (along with their significant others) are totally here for it. Vonda’s even met someone who is helping her to remember that not all men are bad; that there can be light at the end of a broken marriage. All signs really do point to Trent’s life unraveling at the seams as Vonda finally receives the justice—and freedom—that she finally deserves. With everything in her favor, what could possibly go wrong?

Without warning his ex-wife springs from the ashes of the past and reaches out to him in his capacity as a veteran Immigration Custom Enforcement agent. When Sam’s ex-wife dumps a father’s living nightmare into his lap, he must choose between doing his duty as a law enforcer and jeopardizing his cherished relationship with his daughter. Circumstances beyond his control leave him no choice. Before he can seek forgiveness, TERRI ANNE disappears. Sam neglects his duties as an ICE agent and becomes obsessed in finding her. In the wake of his search he discovers a trail of murder, illegal Green Card marriages, and unveils a jihadist’s plot to launch a terror attack on American soil. Truth and time are ICE agent SAM STEELE’S enemy. SYLVIA MAROUN, the ex-wife, is a self-absorbed middle-aged woman with an appetite for young foreign men. Money and her sexuality have always been the solution to her problems. Sylvia becomes mired in a predicament she can’t buy her way out of and is unprepared for the reality of her young husband’s latest love interest. She will face the sins of her past. TERRI ANNE is a young naïve college student with above average book smarts, but lacks a thimbleful of common sense. These characteristics combined with the desire to escape the confines of a smothering and overprotective father will land Terri in the middle of murder and into the arms of a terrorist sleeper cell. MAGGIE O’MALLEY is Sam’s spunky assistant and lover for twelve years who has a difficult time keeping her thoughts to herself. She harbors a secret past she hopes will help Sam unravel the disappearance of his daughter. In her zealous attempt to save the day she not only jeopardizes her relationship with Sam, but also her own life. RASHID MAROUN is an impulsive, charming, narcissist playboy who successfully arranges Green Card marriages. On the surface, his main motivations are money and a good time. Beneath that glitz lurks a cunning villain looking for an escape from his rich wife and fanatical cousin, Jaali. JAALI DIAAB is a renegade and impatient radical who is rejected by the inner circle of jihadists. He is determined to prove to the world that there are other warriors besides Al Qaida, Hamas, and Isis that can strike a blow in the heart of the Great Satan. When his foolish cousin, Rashid, becomes involved in murder, it jeopardizes the mission he has been planning for months. INTO THE DEVIL’S DEN weaves a tangled tale of suspense, murder, and treachery. Each twisted circumstance is triggered by the one (albeit well intentioned) lie Sam Steele told his daughter — a lie that erupts into more lies and leaves lives dangling by a single thread.
