Book Dr Laura

Download or read book Dr Laura written by Vickie L. Bane and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Laura Schlessinger is the hottest thing to hit national radio since Rush Limbaugh. Sixty thousand people call in to The Dr. Laura Show every day to get abused and berated for admitting their flaws and imperfections. Nearly twenty million people tune in across the country to listen to the humiliation, and more than 2.5 million have bought one of her bestsellers-with the latest book hitting bookstores this September. Dr. Laura has been the subject of countless articles, including features in Vanity Fair and New York magazine. And she recently announced that she has signed an exclusive deal for an hour-long, daily, innovative daytime TV program showcasing her unique insights into today's issues and problems, which will begin airing in the fall of 2000. Catering to a nearly spellbound cult following, Dr. Laura has built a veritable media empire by spreading moral wisdom and commonsense advice. But what the enchanted public doesn't know is that Schlessingers' own life is a labyrinth of contradictions-from her own divorce (she openly and adamantly chastises divorcees on the air) to her estrangement for her sister and mother (she is known for her supposedly emphatic adherence to family). And is the doctor really a licensed physician? Find out what classmates, colleagues, patients, and pals have to say about the real Dr. Laura! This book turns the tables on America's number-one moral drill sergeant and professional perfectionist, revealing the personal inconsistencies that define the guru himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990, the groundbreaking television series Twin Peaks, co-created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, opened with a murder mystery when a beautiful homecoming queen, wrapped in plastic, washed up on a cold and rocky beach. Laura Palmer's character began as a plot device that triggered a small town to face its fractured self. But after three seasons and a film, Laura Palmer is no longer just a plot device. Instead of solely focusing on the murderer, like most traditional storytelling at the time, the audience gets to know the victim, a complex young woman who explores her sexuality and endures incredible abuse. Laura's Ghost: Women Speak About Twin Peaks is an examination of Laura Palmer's legacy on the 30th anniversary of Twin Peaks. Palmer's character was one of the few frank and horrific representations of sexual abuse victims which did not diminish the strength and complexity of the victim. Sheryl Lee, who played Laura Palmer, discusses the challenges of the role and how it has impacted herself as well as women she has met over the years, many of whom are survivors of sexual abuse. The role demanded Lee give all of her vulnerability as an actor to this role. This role is one she cannot escape, one with which she will forever be identified. It's a role that still haunts her today. For many women, this character represents them. Here was a woman who was not just a victim, but who was owning her sexuality as well—a woman coming into her own and discovering her sources of power. This book is a reckoning in which women from the show and community speak about grief, mischief, humor, sexuality, strength, weakness, wickedness, and survival.

Book Living Up the Road from Laura Ingalls

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Ingalls and Almanzo Wilder lived in the Missouri Ozarks for over a half century. They loved the scenery, the mild climate, their little Rocky Ridge Farm, the people – They loved their life in the Ozarks. So what’s it like to live a life like that, just up the road from Laura's place? Dan L. White and family have done that, for over a quarter century. During that time, they wrote a number of books about Laura and her books and her life. Living Up the Road from Laura Ingalls – With Excerpts from Seven Books about Her is a sampler of some of those books, along with the story of their personal life in the Ozarks. They found out that living up the way from Laura's place led to much the same way of life. As she so well stated: “I believe we would be happier to have a personal revolution in our individual lives and go back to simpler living and more direct thinking. It is the simple things of life that make living worthwhile, the sweet fundamental things such as love and duty, work and rest and living close to nature.”

Book Laura

Download or read book Laura written by Jeni Ellen Yamada and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The case of Laura (also known as Marta), a young retarded woman with a testable IQ of40, provides the opportunity to address key issues concerning the relationships between language andother mental functions as well and among the components of language use. The case shows thatlanguage can develop and function in spite of marked, pervasive cognitive deficiencies, and itprovides clinical evidence in support of the notion that language is an independent cognitiveability.Possibly the most in-depth and comprehensive study of selectively intact language done todate, this case counters claims that cognitive, social/interactive, and perceptual factors canwholly account for language acquistion and upholds the notion that language is a highly evolved, specialized human ability driven at least in part by a set of principles seen in no other cognitivedomains.Jeni Yamada presents Laura's provocative performance profile of relatively advancedlinguistic abilities alongside significantly impaired nonlinguistic skills. Laura differs from othersubjects studied in that her cognitive impairment is particularly marked. In addition, her syntacticand semantic knowledge are more dissociated than previously studied subjects. As the data on Lauraunfold, they show that language can emerge and develop despite limited nonlinguistic cognitiveabilities, including those hypothesized to be prerequisite for language or to reflect underlyingprinciples necessary for both nonlinguistic and linguistic development. In addition, the caseindicates that various components of language are separable and differentially related tononlanguage abilities.Jeni E. Yamada is coauthor with Susan Curtiss of the Curtiss-YamadaComprehensive Language Evaluation Test and is currently an independent scholar working in the Bostonarea.

Download or read book Indian Conquistadors written by Laura E. Matthew and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-02-13 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conquest of the New World would hardly have been possible if the invading Spaniards had not allied themselves with the indigenous population. This book takes into account the role of native peoples as active agents in the Conquest through a review of new sources and more careful analysis of known but under-studied materials that demonstrate the overwhelming importance of native allies in both conquest and colonial control. In Indian Conquistadors, leading scholars offer the most comprehensive look to date at native participation in the conquest of Mesoamerica. The contributors examine pictorial, archaeological, and documentary evidence spanning three centuries, including little-known eyewitness accounts from both Spanish and native documents, paintings (lienzos) and maps (mapas) from the colonial period, and a new assessment of imperialism in the region before the Spanish arrival. This new research shows that the Tlaxcalans, the most famous allies of the Spanish, were far from alone. Not only did native lords throughout Mesoamerica supply arms, troops, and tactical guidance, but tens of thousands of warriors—Nahuas, Mixtecs, Zapotecs, Mayas, and others—spread throughout the region to participate with the Spanish in a common cause. By offering a more balanced account of this dramatic period, this book calls into question traditional narratives that emphasize indigenous peoples’ roles as auxiliaries rather than as conquistadors in their own right. Enhanced with twelve maps and more than forty illustrations, Indian Conquistadors opens a vital new line of research and challenges our understanding of this important era.

Book excerpt: A Letter from the Author I have been working on this book which is very dear to me, along with having the satisfaction of the finish project, being prove I can honesty say I wasn't sure if I could really even accomplished this. But the finish project says something very much opposite that's why all the more I complete the bigger space in my heart I got for this book. It's a book about the tragedy surrounding the September 11 2001 attack in our own country. I collected so much needed information pertaining to the terrorist attack September 11, 2001. There is not anything like this. But you will find quite a few on the topic but it won't all be in one book. And the little children won't be able to under stand what is going on in their world. My book contains most wanted, names of the victims that lost their lives. Faith much more information is in the book of about 500 pages. That leads me to the title of the book "Never Forget" secondary title "Always Remember." I know that you will just love this book. What a special treasure to have in remembrance of the September. 11, 2001 a book full of colorful bright pages. I can honesty tell you that I have completed what I set out to do Over the last four in a half years I've been dedicated to this project that I've felt I needed to complete not only for me, but for many other people just like me out in the World. The more I completed the stronger the urges were for me to share this project with as many people as I could touch in one way or another. I wanted as many as possible to review this book maybe give a good or even bad review, So they can have the knowledge of why we're at war and secondly and most importantly that all those affected by the tragedy that their names will not go in vain or never be forgotten. I know there are hundreds of thousands of people out in our world who feel the same as I've felt since that tragic day back on September 11, 2001.Therefore I started the book as a scrapbook for my daughters to be able to share with their kids. I was inspired by dad whom has done one on WWII but back than there wasn't the acid free paper as there is today. He had lost all pages due to that fact. I felt so bad that all his hard & dedicated work was gone forever. My Father whom lost his life 8 months before this event has inspirer me to do this for him, and others like him. I've been so dedicated to my work that's pertaining to all those tragic events surrounding Sept.11, 2001 will never be forgotten.
