Book excerpt: "He knew things about me that no one could. His explanation was impossible, but the alternatives were worse..." After putting everything on hold to care for her dying father, Ivy Nichols feels lonely and disconnected. She's struggling to jump in and start again--especially when it comes to dating. The mysterious William Cole walks into her life, like a beacon of light in a fog. He's sensual and captivating--awakening Ivy in ways she's never experienced before. But he knows things about her--deeply personal things. His story is unbelievable, but the truth might be worse. Her friends insist he's either a con artist, or he's crazy. With her heart on the line, Ivy has to decide who--and what--she believes. The rational explanation from her trusted friends? Or the impossible story from the man without a past? The man who swears he will do anything to protect her. One thing she is sure of--William doesn't just know facts about her life. He knows her, inside and out. He knows her as intimately as if he's spent every moment of his life loving her. And according to him, he has. Author's note: a steamy, stand-alone contemporary romance with a bit of suspense and a mysterious twist. It will make you question what you know about love, chance, and fate, and keep you turning the pages to find the answer to one question. Who is William Cole?

  • ISBN : 1982100613
  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book White Ivy written by Susie Yang and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A truly addictive read” (Glamour) about how a young woman’s crush on a privileged former classmate becomes a story of love, lies, and dark obsession, offering stark insights into the immigrant experience, as it hurtles to its electrifying ending in this “twisty, unputdownable, psychological thriller” (People). Ivy Lin is a thief and a liar—but you’d never know it by looking at her. Raised outside of Boston, Ivy’s immigrant grandmother relies on Ivy’s mild appearance for cover as she teaches her granddaughter how to pilfer items from yard sales and second-hand shops. Thieving allows Ivy to accumulate the trappings of a suburban teen—and, most importantly, to attract the attention of Gideon Speyer, the golden boy of a wealthy political family. But when Ivy’s mother discovers her trespasses, punishment is swift and Ivy is sent to China, and her dream instantly evaporates. Years later, Ivy has grown into a poised yet restless young woman, haunted by her conflicting feelings about her upbringing and her family. Back in Boston, when Ivy bumps into Sylvia Speyer, Gideon’s sister, a reconnection with Gideon seems not only inevitable—it feels like fate. Slowly, Ivy sinks her claws into Gideon and the entire Speyer clan by attending fancy dinners, and weekend getaways to the cape. But just as Ivy is about to have everything she’s ever wanted, a ghost from her past resurfaces, threatening the nearly perfect life she’s worked so hard to build. Filled with surprising twists and a nuanced exploration of class and race, White Ivy is a “highly entertaining,” (The Washington Post) “propulsive debut” (San Francisco Chronicle) that offers a glimpse into the dark side of a woman who yearns for success at any cost.

Pretia‘s best friend, Rovi, is ecstatic when he hears that the Junior Epic Games will be held in Phoenis, where he lived before attending Ecrof. True, his time in Phoenis wasn‘t ideal—he‘d lived on the streets as a Star Stealer, part of a gang of kids who stole what they needed to survive—but he‘d found a home there. He‘s excited to return as a Dreamer, an athlete at the top of his game. But all is not well with the Star Stealers. Rovi‘s old friends are being blamed for the unrest surrounding the Games, even though he‘s sure they have nothing to do with it. Now that he‘s back in Phoenis, Rovi is faced with a difficult question: Is he a Dreamer or a Star Stealer? Can he be both? As tensions mount, Pretia and Rovi, along with their friend Vera, find themselves in a race to save the Star Stealers. And they begin to understand that if anyone is going to make a new future for Epoca, it just might be them.

Book Remembering the Kanji Volume 1

Download or read book Remembering the Kanji Volume 1 written by James W. Heisig and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide the student of Japanese with a simple method for correlating the writing and the meaning of Japanese characters in such a way as to make them both easy to remember. It is intended not only for the beginner, but also for the more advanced student looking for some relief from the constant frustration of how to write the kanji and some way to systematize what he or she already knows. The author begins with writing because--contrary to first impressions--it is in fact the simpler of the two. He abandons the traditional method of ordering the kanji according to their frequency of use and organizes them according to their component parts or "primitive elements." Assigning each of these parts a distinct meaning with its own distinct image, the student is led to harness the powers of "imaginative memory" to learn the various combinations that result. In addition, each kanji is given its own key word to represent the meaning, or one of the principal meanings, of that character. These key words provide the setting for a particular kanji's "story," whose protagonists are the primitive elements. In this way, students are able to complete in a few short months a task that would otherwise take years. Armed with the same skills as Chinese or Korean students, who know the meaning and writing of the kanji but not their pronunciation in Japanese, they are now in a much better position to learn to read (which is treated in a separate volume). Book Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home

Download or read book Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home written by Peter Hughes Jachimiak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using an innovative auto-ethnographic approach to investigate the otherness of the places that make up the childhood home and its neighbourhood in relation to memory-derived and memory-imbued cultural geographies, Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home is concerned with childhood spaces and children's perspectives of those spaces and, consequentially, with the personalised locations that make up the childhood family home and its immediate surroundings (such as the garden, the street, etc.). Whilst this book is primarily structured by the author's memories of living in his own Welsh childhood home during the 1970s - that is, the auto-ethnographic framework - it is as much about living anywhere amid the remembered cultural remnants of the past as it is immersing oneself in cultural geographies of the here-and-now. As a result, Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home is part of the ongoing pursuit by cultural geographers to provide a personal exploration of the pluralities of shared landscapes, whereby such an engagement with space and place aid our construction of cognitive maps of meaning that, in turn, manifest themselves as both individual and collective cultural experiences. Furthermore, touching upon our co-habiting of ghost topologies, Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home also encourages a critical exploration of children’s spirituality amid the haunted cultural and geographical spaces and places of a house and its neighbourhood: the cellar, hallway, parlour, stairs, bedroom, attic, shops, cemeteries, and so on.

Book excerpt: Reading Late Lawrence is a study of a number of the neglected fictional works of D. H. Lawrence's last period: these include Glad Ghosts , Sun, The Lovely Lady, The Blue Moccasins , and the first two revisions of Lady Chatterley's Lover . The particular focus is upon Lawrence's revisions, and the insights they offer into the complexity of his writing processes and the depth of his commitment to renewal and re-imagining. The study draws extensively upon the manuscript and variant material recently made available in the new scholarly editions of Lawrence's work.
