Book A River Runs through It and Other Stories

Download or read book A River Runs through It and Other Stories written by Norman MacLean and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-05-03 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling classic set amid the mountains and streams of early twentieth-century Montana, “as beautiful as anything in Thoreau or Hemingway” (Chicago Tribune). When Norman Maclean sent the manuscript of A River Runs Through It and Other Stories to New York publishers, he received a slew of rejections. One editor, so the story goes, replied, “it has trees in it.” Today, the title novella is recognized as one of the great American tales of the twentieth century, and Maclean as one of the most beloved writers of our time. The finely distilled product of a long life of often surprising rapture—for fly-fishing, for the woods, for the interlocked beauty of life and art—A River Runs Through It has established itself as a classic of the American West filled with beautiful prose and understated emotional insights. Based on Maclean’s own experiences as a young man, the book’s two novellas and short story are set in the small towns and mountains of western Montana. It is a world populated with drunks, loggers, card sharks, and whores, but also one rich in the pleasures of fly-fishing, logging, cribbage, and family. By turns raunchy and elegiac, these superb tales express, in Maclean’s own words, “a little of the love I have for the earth as it goes by.” “Maclean’s book—acerbic, laconic, deadpan—rings out of a rich American tradition that includes Mark Twain, Kin Hubbard, Richard Bissell, Jean Shepherd, and Nelson Algren.” —New York Times Book Review Includes a new foreword by Robert Redford, director of the Academy Award–winning film adaptation

Book Memories of a Fisherman s Wife

Download or read book Memories of a Fisherman s Wife written by Alma Jean Irving and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story starts on the day Jean was born into a family of strife with an alcoholic father and parents that fought every weekend. She was raised with a sister and three brothers. The three oldest of the children were very close in age and did everything together as young children. The other two children came along later. So they were not as close as the older three were. She went on to marry her first love at age fifteen. He was twenty. He drank a lot of beer so consequently there were a lot of problems. Over the years, he was unfaithful to her multiple of times. He was not yet ready to settle down. Yet they had three children to raise. Roland was a commercial fisherman and times were hard. He would go out and get whatever seafood was in season to sell and bring some home to cook. He spent lots of time away from home, sometimes two or three days. Sometimes he would be working, but most of the time, he was just goofing off or spending time with other people, and sometimes it would be with other women. Sometimes Jean would go out and find him and get him to come home. Jean spent a lot of time cleaning the house and moving the furniture around from boredom. Other times, she would work outside the home. She tried to keep a stable home for the kids as best she could under the circumstances. Sometimes Roland would take the children out on the boat, fishing and clamming. One time, there was an accident that occurred while he had the two boys out in the ocean on a small boat. Roland escaped near death several times from events that happened while working in his fishing profession as a commercial fisherman. What happened to him? And what happened to the girl in this story? This is a story that never gets boring. It keeps your interest to the end.

Drawn from rare periodicals and obscure archival sources from the 1880s to the 1930s, these accounts, few of which have ever before been translated to English, address his affairs with female admirers, his passions and hobbies, his visits to shelters for the homeless, his support of aspiring writers, as well as his advice to theater directors, actors and writers. A complement to the wealth of scholarly material on Chekhov, this work offers new discoveries for both specialists and general enthusiasts.

I share tips and directions to twelve other hot spots in Colorado. I also reveal what lures and artificial flies to use and at what times of the year to use them, utilizing the techniques that have provided excellent results for me. I will show you tricks such as how to use the drag on your fishing reel so big fish wont break your line. Also, you will learn the secrets of line watching and the difference between fishing with a fiberglass pole and graphite pole. Fishing has always been about harmony for me; I find it in the fluidity between wilderness, man, and water. I started fishing with my father when I was six years old. My father was sixty-six then and was still a spectacular fishermanalways respectful of what lies below the surface. Now that Im in my sixties, I can see all the ways Ive become like my father. Taking home your perfect catch takes skill, so let me guide you. I invite you to put your waders on and come test the waters.

  • Author : Charlie Groth

Download or read book Another Haul written by Charlie Groth and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lewis Island in Lambertville, New Jersey, is the site of the Lewis Fishery, the last haul seine American shad fishery on the nontidal Delaware River. The Lewis family has fished in the same spot since 1888 and operated the fishery through five generations. The extended Lewis family, its fishery's crew, and the Lambertville community connect with people throughout the region, including environmentalists concerned about the river. It was a Lewis who raised the alarm and helped resurrect a polluted river and its biosphere. While this once exclusively masculine activity is central to the tiny island, today men, women, and children fish, living out a sense of place, belonging, and sustainability. In Another Haul: Narrative Stewardship and Cultural Sustainability at the Lewis Family Fishery, author Charlie Groth highlights the traditional, vernacular, and everyday cultural expressions of the family and crew to understand how community, culture, and the environment intersect. Groth argues there is a system of narrative here that combines verbal activities and everyday activities. On the basis of over two decades of participation and observation, interviews, surveys, and a wide variety of published sources, Groth identifies a phenomenon she calls "narrative stewardship." This narrative system, emphasizing place, community, and commitment, in turn, encourages environmental and cultural stewardship, tradition, and community. Intricate and embedded, the system appears invisible, but careful study unpacks and untangles how people, often unconsciously, foster sustainability. Though an ethnography of an occupation, the volume encourages readers to consider what arises as special about all cultures and what needs to be seen and preserved.
