Book excerpt: "Part biography and part regional history, this engaging narrative of one man's complicated life is filled with stories that ought not be forgotten . . . Remembering Ernie Kuck is a great read, good for the soul " --Jane Kirkpatrick, award-winning author of A Sweetness to the Soul Who was Ernie Kuck? A cattleman, a multimillionaire, a man with many facets and few words. Yet Ernie left an indelible mark on the home he loved--The Dalles, Oregon. Ernie experienced ninety-five years of American history watching his small rural town enter the modern era. While his breed of outdoorsman--highly principled and tough--may have vanished, the independent and simple virtues of this common man will long be remembered through the legacy he left the citizens of Wasco County. Remembering Ernie Kuck proves one man can make a difference - because Ernie did

Book Graph Representation Learning

Download or read book Graph Representation Learning written by William L. William L. Hamilton and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graph-structured data is ubiquitous throughout the natural and social sciences, from telecommunication networks to quantum chemistry. Building relational inductive biases into deep learning architectures is crucial for creating systems that can learn, reason, and generalize from this kind of data. Recent years have seen a surge in research on graph representation learning, including techniques for deep graph embeddings, generalizations of convolutional neural networks to graph-structured data, and neural message-passing approaches inspired by belief propagation. These advances in graph representation learning have led to new state-of-the-art results in numerous domains, including chemical synthesis, 3D vision, recommender systems, question answering, and social network analysis. This book provides a synthesis and overview of graph representation learning. It begins with a discussion of the goals of graph representation learning as well as key methodological foundations in graph theory and network analysis. Following this, the book introduces and reviews methods for learning node embeddings, including random-walk-based methods and applications to knowledge graphs. It then provides a technical synthesis and introduction to the highly successful graph neural network (GNN) formalism, which has become a dominant and fast-growing paradigm for deep learning with graph data. The book concludes with a synthesis of recent advancements in deep generative models for graphs—a nascent but quickly growing subset of graph representation learning.

He deflates the myths surrounding scientists -- invincibility, superiority, and genius; instead, he argues that it is common sense and an inquiring mind that are essential to the makeup of a scientist. He delivers many wry observations on how to choose a research topic, how to get along wih collaborators and older scientists and administrators, how (and how not) to present a scientific paper, and how to cope with culturally "superior" specialists in the arts and humanities.

Book Inventing Luxembourg

Download or read book Inventing Luxembourg written by Pit Péporté and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-02-16 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The grand duchy of Luxembourg was created after the Napoleonic Wars, but at the time there was no 'nation' that identified with the emergent state. This book analyses how politicians, scholars and artists have initiated and contributed to nation-building processes in Luxembourg since the nineteenth century, processes that – as this book argues – are still ongoing. The focus rests on three types of representations of nationhood: a shared past, a common homeland and a national language. History was written so as to justify the country's political independence. Territorial borders shifted meaning, constantly repositioning the national community. The local dialect – initially considered German variant – was gradually transformed into the 'national language', Luxembourgish.
