Book Malta Remembered

Download or read book Malta Remembered written by Margaret Dexter and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-03-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1963, Margaret Dexters husband made an impulsive decision to pack up and move to England for a year. They leased their home in Santa Barbara, California, and together with their four children made an unforgettable journey by land and sea, throwing caution to the wind. The move to England exposed the Dexters to much of the cultural richness of Europe; unfortunately, they returned to face financial ruin and cliff-hanging events. In 1967, Stillman Dexters work led him to Libya, forcing him to leave the family. In 1969, Margaret, five children and two poodles moved to the island of Malta, not far from Libya and closer to Stillman. Their life became almost idyllic, promising a rosy future. By November 1970, Libyas tense political situation changed everything. Libyas leader, Muammar Qaddaffi, denied renewal of all American work permits. The family plans for what might have been were swept away by one telegram. Margaret Dexter pens a loving tribute not only to the island of Malta and its special inhabitants, but also to her familys remarkable peregrination. Malta Remembered is an inspiring story of how one couple blessed and united by good fortune braved waves of adversity with hard work and love.

Book The Spiritual Practice of Remembering

Download or read book The Spiritual Practice of Remembering written by Margaret Bendroth and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often dismiss history as dull or irrelevant, but our modern disengagement from the past puts us fundamentally out of step with the long witness of the Christian tradition. Yet, says Margaret Bendroth, the past tense is essential to our language of faith, and without it our conversation is limited and thin. This accessible, beautifully written book presents a new argument for honoring the past. The Christian tradition gives us the powerful image of a vast communion of saints, all of God's people, both living and dead, in vital conversation with each other. This kind of connection with our ancestors in the faith, Bendroth maintains, will not happen by wishing or by accident. She argues that remembering must become a regular spiritual practice, part of the rhythm of our daily lives as we recognize our world to be, in many ways, a gift from others who have gone before.

Book Dexter and Philosophy

Download or read book Dexter and Philosophy written by Richard Greene and published by Open Court. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What explains the huge popular following for Dexter, currently the most-watched show on cable, which sympathetically depicts a serial killer driven by a cruel compulsion to brutally slay one victim after another? Although Dexter Morgan kills only killers, he is not a vigilante animated by a sense of justice but a charming psychopath animated by a lust to kill, ritualistically and bloodily. However his gory appetite is controlled by “Harry’s Code,” which limits his victims to those who have gotten away with murder, and his job as a blood spatter expert for the Miami police department gives him the inside track on just who those legitimate targets may be. In Dexter and Philosophy, an elite team of philosophers don their rubber gloves and put Dexter’s deeds under the microscope. Since Dexter is driven to ritual murder by his “Dark Passenger,” can he be blamed for killing, especially as he only murders other murderers? Does Dexter fit the profile of the familiar fictional type of the superhero? What part does luck play in making Dexter who he is? How and why are horror and disgust turned into aesthetic pleasure for the TV viewer? How essential is Dexter’s emotional coldness to his lust for slicing people up? Are Dexter’s lies and deceptions any worse than the lies and deceptions of the non-criminals around him? Why does Dexter long to be a normal human being and why can’t he accomplish this apparently simple goal?

It tosses you from one emotion to another from chapter to chapter. Its also a mystery with lots of twists and turns. Be warned Sinister has a sensitive side too, you may even shed a tear. In the end, I'm quite certain that you will be thrilled with SINISTER. Dexter Remmington's meteoric rise in the field of law astonished everyone but Dexter. In no time at all he became the high water mark for D.A.'s across the country. He didn't just win every case he took on; he literally embarrassed the defense with his brilliance. This did little to enhance Dexter's popularity among his adversaries, not to mention their clientele. Being popular held no importance to Dexter, inside or outside the courtroom. He just wasn't a people person. Some even thought Dexter became a district attorney to eliminate as many people as he could within the law. Now he was missing without a trace. Detective Alister Woodrow was assigned to track Remmington down before the case became federal. Woodrow's long time friend Jack Stringer who worked for Remmington as his personal private investigator joined in the search. What they found was a horror so dark and despicable; their very sanity would be jeopardized

Book excerpt: On March 14, 1912, Hillsville, Virginia, native Floyd Allen (1856–1913) was convicted of three criminal charges: assault, maiming, and the rescue of prisoners in custody. What had begun as a scuffle between Allen's nephews over a young woman ended with him being charged as the guilty party after he allegedly hit a deputy in the head with a pistol. When the jury returned with the verdict, Allen stood up and announced, "Gentleman, I ain't a-goin." A gunfight ensued in the crowded courtroom that killed five people and wounded seven others. The state of Virginia put Floyd and Claude Allen to death by electrocution the following spring. More than a century later, the event continues to impact the citizens and communities of the area as local newspapers recirculate the sordid story and give credence to annual public reenactments that continue to negatively impact the national perception of the region. In this first book-length scholarly review of the Hillsville shoot-out, author Travis A. Rountree examines various media written about and inspired by the event and explains how the incident reinforced the nation's conception of Appalachia through depictions of this sensational moment in history. In all, this book provides an extensive analysis of this historic conflict and reveals a new understanding of the shaping of memories and stories from the event.

Book excerpt: Soon after the Porters adopted the former bait dog, Sheba, they decided to add another Staffordshire Bull Terrier to their pack of rescue dogs. A visit to their local rescue sanctuary saw them adopting a six-month old puppy, part of an abandoned litter that had literally been dumped at the gates of the sanctuary. They named him Muttley and he was soon assimilated into their canine family. They were't aware at the time, but poor Muttley had not one, but two unusual psychological problems that would lead to this little boy needing special treatment for the rest of his life. Most importantly, they had to learn to cope with an agoraphobic dog. This beautiful dog was quite simply afraid of wide open spaces! Can you imagine owning a dog that's afraid to go out for walks, or to enjoy running and playing with his packmates? How they learned to cope with Muttley's problem and his secondary issue of being afraid of other dogs is here in his story. Muttley's Tale is a story of love, understanding and patience, as Brian and Juliet gradually learned ways to bring happiness into Muttley's life, at times seemingly against the odds. Muttley is a real character who, despite his problems, has brought fun and laughter to the family.

Book Family of Rescue Dogs Collection

Download or read book Family of Rescue Dogs Collection written by Brian L. Porter and published by Next Chapter. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 965 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All seven books in Brian L. Porter's 'Family Of Rescue Dogs' series, now in one volume! Sasha: A Staffordshire Bull Terrier abandoned close to death at the age of 6 weeks old, Sasha was rescued from a street gutter and had the good fortune to be adopted by author Brian L. Porter and his family. Despite suffering from a catalogue of injuries, including two broken legs and skin allergies, and being diagnosed as an epileptic at just two years old, Sasha's story is one of triumph over adversity; of love, happiness and inspiration. Her love of life and capacity for enjoying every day to the fullest is nothing short of miraculous, and her story is told here by the person who shares every moment of her life on a daily basis. Sheba - From Hell to Happiness: Rescue dog Sheba, Sasha’s best friend, was starved, beaten and used as bait for the training of fighting dogs and then thrown on a rubbish tip and left to die, a barely living skeleton. The author and his wife adopted this unfortunate waif and so began a long period of recuperation and training as they gradually helped Sheba back to full health, and to live sociably and happily within their pack of rescue dogs. A story of real triumph over adversity, full of emotion and a fair amount of humour too, Sheba’s is a real-life tale of just what can be achieved in rehabilitating a dog, having suffered a living hell, from the brink of death to a life full of happiness. Cassie's Tale: Cassie was just over two years old when she joined Brian and Juliet’s family of rescues, having already had three previous owners in her short life. The tiny little terrier soon wormed her way into the hearts of the family, and her antics and oversized attitude quickly earned her the nicknames ‘The Mad Ferret’ and ‘The Wicked Witch of the West.’ Cassie can best be described as a ‘pocket dynamo’ or, as the author puts it, “She is filled with boundless energy, and despite being fourteen years old now, she’s like a Duracell bunny without an off switch.” Penny The Railway Pup: Penny, a tiny terrier, was abandoned in a particularly cruel manner. From being attacked and needing emergency surgery, to days out at the coast, chasing seagulls, and stately homes, Penny's life in Brian's pack of rescue dogs has never been anything but interesting and eventful. Remembering Dexter: After being thrown out from a moving car on a motorway and rescued from the dog pound by Brian Porter and his wife, Dexter had a happy life in their family of rescue dogs. On the 8th June, 2019, Dexter - a Labrador-Staffy Crossbreed - passed away after a year-long fight against illness. Part funny, part serious and part tragic, this is the story of Dexter’s life. Dylan - The Flying Bedlington: Whipped, beaten and abused for the first year of his life, Dylan was eventually left tied to the gates of a dog sanctuary, with a note telling of his treatment. The fates were smiling on the little Bedlington terrier, however, as the author and his family adopted him the very same day, and Dylan began his life as part of the author’s Family of Rescue Dogs. From his appearance at a national dog show, to chasing squirrels in the forest, Dylan has led a wonderful, happy life since being rescued. Muffin, Digby And Petal: When Juliet Porter saw an advertisement for Puppies For Sale, little did the author expect that instead of one puppy, they would end up adopting 3 adorable little pups from the same litter. This is the story of those three puppies, who in nine years have remained inseparable, to the extent the family refer to them as ‘one dog with twelve legs,’ literally doing everything together and bringing laughter and joy to everyone with their antics.
