Book Remembering Delaware

Download or read book Remembering Delaware written by and published by Remembering. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dela-where? is a joke that all too often hits a nerve with residents of the second smallest state, but Dela-here is a great place to be--amid all the big cities of the Eastern Seaboard but just far enough from the beaten path to have its own unique identity. With a selection of fine historic images from her best-selling book, Historic Photos of Delaware, Ellen Rendle provides a valuable and revealing historical retrospective on the growth and development of Delaware in Remembering Delaware. This collection of photographs celebrates the First State's history with an eclectic mix of rural and urban, from the rolling hills and swift streams of New Castle County to the flat and rich agricultural lands of Kent and Sussex counties to the enduring beauty of the beach communities of the Atlantic Coast. Subjects range from horse-drawn farm machinery and black powder wagons to the celebratory openings of the Delaware Memorial and the Chesapeake Bay bridges. Years of growth and growing pains are buoyed with proud and happy moments at ship christenings, the Delmarva Chicken Festival, and cultural achievements. A tour of Remembering Delaware is sure to provide an illuminating and fond journey back into the state's rich history.

Book excerpt: This compelling book includes 186 case studies of patients who were admitted to the Delaware State Hospital at Farnhurst between 1894 and 1920. Until now, their stories have remained hidden away, lost, forgotten, inaccessible. This book changes that by providing a detailed look at the lives of a wide variety of patients. Farnhurst is usually thought of as having been simply a "mental hospital" or "lunatic asylum." In reality, the institution cared for people with many different conditions ranging from "congenital imbeciles," to traumatic and acquired brain injuries, syphilis, epilepsy, delusions, schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, Huntington's disease, acute intermittent porphyria, deafness, blindness, age-related senility, pregnancy-related conditions, substance abuse disorders, etc. - at a time when there were few or no other options for care and treatment. An important resource for reducing the stigma associated with being diagnosed with a mental illness or spending time in a mental institution, this book shows that every patient came from somewhere and had meaningful lives before, during, and after their time at the Delaware State Hospital. They were real individuals, each with their own story. Come meet them.

Book excerpt: This thesis tells the previously untold story of how environmental activists in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in the 1980s waged a nearly decade-long and ultimately losing battle against a plan to pump water from the free-flowing Delaware River. As a case study of grassroots community activism during the presidential administration of Ronald Reagan, the struggle known locally as "Dump the Pump" and spearheaded by a nonprofit organization called Del-AWARE supports and provides a regional take on recent scholarship that has illuminated the vibrant underlying dynamics of local civic engagement occurring amid the overshadowing political conservatism of the Reagan years. Also a case study in public history, this thesis demonstrates how collective historical memory fueled not only Del-AWARE's protracted struggle, but its enduring legacy in public policy and community life. It concludes with suggestions for preserving the history of Del-AWARE before it is lost forever.

Book The Delaware Indians

Download or read book The Delaware Indians written by Clinton Alfred Weslager and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1972 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the best tribal histories . . . the product of decades of study by a layman archeologist-historian. With a rich blend of archeology, anthropology, Indian oral traditions (he gives us one of the best accounts of the Walum Olum, the fascinating hieroglyphics depicting the tribal origins of the Delaware), and documentary research, Weslager writes for the general reader as well as the scholar."--American Historical Review In the seventeenth century white explorers and settlers encountered a tribe of Indians calling themselves Lenni Lenape along the Delaware River and its tributaries in New Jersey, Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania, and southeastern New York. Today communities of their descendants, known as Delawares, are found in Oklahoma, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Ontario, and individuals of Delaware ancestry are mingled with the white populations in many other states. The Delaware Indians is the first comprehensive account of what happened to the main body of the Delaware Nation over the past three centuries. C. A. Weslager puts into perspective the important events in United States history in which the Delawares participated and he adds new information about the Delawares. He bridges the gap between history and ethnology by analyzing the reasons why the Delawares were repeatedly victimized by the white man.

Book Keeper of the Delaware Dolls

Download or read book Keeper of the Delaware Dolls written by Lynette Perry and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich in images and gently told, Keeper of the Delaware Dolls is the story of a Delaware Indian woman, Lynette Perry, and the remarkable life she has led in rural Oklahoma throughout the twentieth century. As Perry reflects, hers is a life "lived to old rhythms played by a country fiddle and an Indian drum," a fluid merging of square dances and Delaware stomp dances. Through her eyes, readers are afforded a rare glimpse of how the world of the Delawares has persisted and remained meaningful into the modern era. A recurring theme in Perry?s life has been the making and keeping of dolls, a practice joining her to her female Delaware ancestors. Her great-grandmother Wahoney (Ma Wah Taise) was a doll keeper who died at the age of 108 in 1909. Believing the Delawares? old world to have slipped away, Wahoney asked that her dolls be buried with her. Unlike her great-grandmother, however, Perry feels that the abiding force of traditional Delaware culture has returned to her, time and again, throughout her long life. In an effort to connect to her Native past, she has revived the doll-making craft.

Book On Records

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Newman
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2012-12-01
  • ISBN : 0803244916
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book On Records written by Andrew Newman and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of indigenous, early American, memory, and media studies, On Records illuminates the problems of communication between cultures and across generations. Andrew Newman examines several controversial episodes in the historical narrative of the Delaware (Lenape) Indians, including the stories of their primordial migration to settle a homeland spanning the Delaware and Hudson Rivers, the arrival of the Dutch and the first colonial land fraud, William Penn’s founding of Pennsylvania with a Great Treaty of Peace, and the “infamous” 1737 Pennsylvania Walking Purchase. As Newman demonstrates, the quest for ideal records—authentic, authoritative, and objective, anchored in the past yet intelligible to the present—has haunted historical actors and scholars alike. Yet without “proof,” how can we know what really happened? On Records articulates surprising connections among colonial documents, recorded oral traditions, material and visual cultures. Its comprehensive, probing analysis of historical evidence yields a multi-faceted understanding of events and reveals new insights into the divergent memories of a shared past.
