Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Christianity in the making, James D.G. Dunn examines in depth the major factors that shaped first-generation Christianity and beyond, exploring the parting of the ways between Christianity and Judaism, the Hellenization of Christianity, and responses to Gnosticism. He mines all the first- and second-century sources, including the New Testament Gospels, New Testament apocrypha, and such church fathers as Ignatius, Justin Martyr, and Irenaeus, showing how the Jesus tradition and the figures of James, Paul, Peter, and John were still esteemed influences but were also the subject of intense controversy as the early church wrestled with its evolving identity.

Book Remembering Boethius

Download or read book Remembering Boethius written by Dr Elizabeth Elliott and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remembering Boethius explores the rich intersection between the reception of Boethius and the literary construction of aristocratic identity, focusing on a body of late-medieval vernacular literature that draws on the Consolation of Philosophy to represent and reimagine contemporary experiences of exile and imprisonment. Elizabeth Elliott presents new interpretations of English, French, and Scottish texts, including Machaut's Confort d'ami, Remede de Fortune, and Fonteinne amoureuse, Jean Froissart's Prison amoureuse, Thomas Usk's Testament of Love, and The Kingis Quair, reading these texts as sources contributing to the development of the reader's moral character. These writers evoke Boethius in order to articulate and shape personal identities for public consumption, and Elliott's careful examination demonstrates that these texts often write not one life, but two, depicting the relationship between poet and aristocratic patron. These works associate the reception of wisdom with the cultivation of memory, and in turn, illuminate the contemporary reception of the Consolation as a text that itself focuses on memory and describes a visionary process of education that takes place within Boethius's own mind. In asking how and why writers remember Boethius in the Middle Ages, this book sheds new light on how medieval people imagined, and reimagined, themselves.

Book Revival and Awakenings

  • Author : Riaan Engelbrecht
  • Publisher : XinXii
  • Release : 2023-03-05
  • ISBN : 3987623047
  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book Revival and Awakenings written by Riaan Engelbrecht and published by XinXii. This book was released on 2023-03-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revival is back in the spotlight with what is happening in America at the start of 2023. This book explores what is true revival and a spiritual awakening. Prophetically, it delves into what God has been saying for a long time, which is that the Lord will sweep the earth with revival in the end times which will ignite many followers with His holy fire. What will this revival look like? This is the big question, and one would rather say it will not be a singular event, but a sequence of Godly movements across the globe that will be infectious, contagious and real. In an awakening, the Holy Spirit gives unbelieving people - who are dead in their trespasses and sins -a new awareness of their needs. A revival is connected to the people of God and it is when those who are in churches - those who are professing believers - are ministered to by the Holy Spirit in such a way that they are renewed in their devotion to the Lord. The time is ripe for the one final great harvest, yet this calls for the revived church, full of the fire of the Holy Spirit, to go into the fields, to awaken the lost and the forgotten and broken, and to bring them into the loving embrace of a God who is full of compassion, grace and mercy. This is the time of spiritual latter rains, and now is the time to welcome the embrace of a God who is real, alive, and who calls us all into His arms to reflect His beauty and greatness. It is not God’s Will that any soul He created should perish, but that all men should come to the knowledge of God and be saved. God is calling on all believers to cast their net in the deep for the harvest of souls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Proverb a Day Keeps the Devil Away applies the principles of God found in the Book of Proverbs to daily living. These illustrations stem from relationships, home, work, play, decisions, reactions, thoughts, injustice and justice. Some are humorous and some very serious. Each one demonstrates the theme of that verse. The Book of Proverbs is as timely as time itself. Times have changed but people have not. They still face the hard issues of life: the same fears and hurts, the same temptations and sin, the same struggle with what is right and wrong, and the same questions about what role God really plays in their life. This devotional study aids its readers in getting a grip on these challenges. Philip Ayers was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on March 2nd, 1948. He is the second born of a family of five. Very early in his life, his family moved to Salem, Virginia, where he resided until he joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of seventeen. He served in the Viet Nam conflict. Book excerpt: When we find something valuable that helps us accomplish the things that matter most, we don't let go of it. Life is not a game. However, on multiple occasions, the Bible uses competitive sports metaphors to demonstrate the discipline and training necessary to grow and become everything God created you to be. The things we care about most -- our identity, our purpose, our relationships -- are far more important than a game. We have to learn to win in these areas. We understand development when it comes to sports, our careers, our hobbies, and even our personal lives. There are tangible goals we can shoot for. And yet, when it comes to our spiritual lives, it often feels more elusive. This book is not a fail-proof formula to avoid pain, challenges, or adversity. It's a journey to a deeper relationship with God. This is the reason you were created. This is winning in life. This is what you're going to care about when you come to the end of your life and wonder, "Did my life matter?" What if you could be developed in your professional career through a greater understanding of God's Word? What if you could learn to build a healthy culture both in your workplace and in your home? What if you could win in the areas of life that you care about the most?
