Book excerpt: Stormwater road runoff is a widespread non-point source of contaminants such as nutrients, which endangers water bodies, especially in vulnerable karst areas such as Florida. While roadside vegetated filter strips (VFSs) and stormwater basins are generally accepted best management practices (BMPs) for stormwater management, uncertainties about VFS nutrient removal are reported and stormwater basins are concerned of facilitating contaminant transport. In this dissertation, the application and efficacy of engineered infiltration media was tested as a subgrade for the enhanced nutrient removal from roadway runoff. Results of field-scale laboratory testing indicated that a VFS with engineered biosorption activated media (BAM) outperformed a Control with sandy soil concerning nitrate removal (mean 94±6% reduction vs. 23±64% increase) and total nitrogen removal (mean 80±5% vs. 38±23% reduction) within a 6 m filter width. However, BAM and soil performed similarly with respected to total phosphorus removal within the first 1.5 m filter width (84±9% vs. 82±12% reduction). Next, field sampling was conducted to characterize nutrient load and delivery in stormwater road runoff in different events, providing insights to improve design of BMPs. Three types of runoff events were characterized, where nutrients are transported differently under the controls of nutrient supply and transport conditions. Antecedent dry period was strongly related to nutrient supply and runoff volume was correlated to nutrient transport capacity. Finally, the configuration of the subsurface in stormwater basins and runoff movement to and within karst aquifer near Silver Springs in central Florida were investigated using geophysical surveys (ground penetrating radar and frequency domain electromagnetics) and tracer tests. Numerous subsurface anomalies and surface sinkholes were detected in the basins. High groundwater velocities in the surficial aquifer (10−6 to 10−3 ms−1) and Upper Floridan Aquifer (maximum on the order of 10−1 ms−1) indicated that the basins act as hotspots of groundwater contamination in the area.

Book excerpt: Highway stormwater runoff from large, multi-lane highways is one of the leading causes of watercourse impairment worldwide. Road runoff frequently carries within it a substantial physicochemical pollutant burden which includes sediments, nutrients, petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals. In seasonally-cold climates, winter maintenance activities entail the use of road salts, which constitute an additional source of pollutant loading to the road surface. A multi-pronged approach was used to improve the state of practice surrounding highway design, management and the methodological application of treatment approaches. First, a simple road salt application optimization tool was developed in order to help highway maintenance managers utilize a sound, scientifically defensible methodology when making determinations related to the frequency, timing and rate of road salt application. Data from three sites was used to modify the temperature index (TI) model to include sinusoidal variance in the daily melt coefficient, in addition to considerations related to the surficial rerouting of snow as well as the melt point depression caused by salt's interaction with snow and ice. The second avenue of investigation led to the development of artificial neural networks (ANNs) capable of predicting the runoff concentration statistical distribution parameters for common heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb) and total suspended solid (TSS) event mean concentrations (EMCs) within highway stormwater runoff. The third avenue of investigation focused on the assessment and testing of novel treatment media for the purpose of enhancing existing roadside ditches in environmentally sensitive areas (ESAs). Blast furnace (BF) slag, basic oxygenated furnace (BOF) slag, iron-enriched overburden (IRON) and wood chips (WC) were tested. The long-term removal of Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn within repacked soil columns ranged from 46-98%. The fourth research effort focused on the development of a methodological framework for designing enhanced roadside ditch systems for application in ESAs. The feasibility of this framework is demonstrated through a field-scale pilot study, complemented by three years of real-time monitoring data. Three different types of impermeable liner - compacted clay (CC), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) - were tested for their ability to prevent stormwater egress from the facility.

Book excerpt: The overall goal of this field study was to evaluate the potential effectiveness of vegetated highway embankments as a stormwater runoff best management practice (BMP) for retention of metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and particulates. The study characterized roadway sediment particulate matter, annual pollutant mass loading, and long-term pollutant retention for three field sites in eastern Kansas. The field study indicated that pollutant retention was primarily a surficial phenomenon, limited to the top 0 to 2 inches of highway embankment soils. Effectiveness of vegetated embankments for net particle retention was found to be greater than 70% for particles of 0.020 mm or greater. The 18 ft long vegetated highway embankments evaluated in this study were effective stormwater runoff BMPs for zinc with 42 to 100% long-term pollutant mass retention. Moderate performance was observed for pyrene and chrysene with 20 to 100% mass retention. Vegetative embankments were less effective for copper and benzo(a)pyrene with 9 to 42% mass retention. The key benefits of utilizing highway embankments for runoff control include cost-effectiveness relative to other engineered systems and compatibility with roadway design and maintenance requirements. While specific pollutant mass retention was observed to be variable and dependent on metal or PAH properties in runoff, the overall result is a significant reduction in pollutant mass to the local watershed, particularly when embankments are greater than 30 to 45 ft in length.
