Book Politics Of Remediation

Download or read book Politics Of Remediation written by Mary Soliday and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2002-09-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While some students need more writing instruction than others, The Politics of Remediation reveals how that need also pertains to the institutions themselves. Mary Soliday argues that universities may need remedial English to alleviate their own crises in admissions standards, enrollment, mission, and curriculum, and English departments may use remedial programs to mediate their crises in enrollment, electives, and relationships to the liberal arts and professional schools.Following a brief history of remedial English and the political uses of remediation at CCNY before, during, and after the open admissions policy, Soliday questions the ways in which students' need for remedial writing instruction has become widely associated with the need to acculturate minorities to the university. In disentangling identity politics from remediation, she challenges a powerful assumption of post-structuralist work: that a politics of language use is equivalent to the politics of access to institutions.

Book Diagnosis and Remediation of Language Disabilities

Download or read book Diagnosis and Remediation of Language Disabilities written by Arvind Sharma and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growing awareness of children with specific learning disabilities the primary task confronting a teacher is successfully identifying assessing and providing remedial measures to the children in accordance to their specific problem. One has to look out for paradoxes a child who is unable to read but good at arithmetic, one whose spellings are confusing but who is up-to-date and informed about current events, science & history. The general education framework has a system of automatic promotion to next class irrespective of the marks obtained by the student. This leads the child to a class which may be much above his ability level, thus widening the discrepancy between the actual performance of the child & the expected performance of that class. Added to these is the various syllabi system, varied second languages, media of instruction and also a third language to be learnt. With the post school/college education having become so competitive in general, our children with hidden handicap get nowhere in the educational system, thus receiving no attention to their talents. If the purpose of Education is to impart knowledge to learner, the evaluation system should focus on them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remediation in medical education is the act of facilitating a correction for trainees who started out on the journey toward becoming excellent physicians but have moved off course. This book offers an evidence-based and practical approach to the identification and remediation of medical trainees who are unable to perform to standards. As assessment of clinical competence and professionalism has become more sophisticated and ubiquitous, medical educators increasingly face the challenge of implementing effective and respectful means to work with trainees who do not yet meet expectations of the profession and society. Remediation in Medical Education: A Mid-Course Correction describes practical stepwise approaches to remediate struggling learners in fundamental medical competencies; discusses methods used to define competencies and the science underlying the fundamental shift in the delivery and assessment of medical education; explores themes that provide context for remediation, including professional identity formation and moral reasoning, verbal and nonverbal learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders in high-functioning individuals, diversity, and educational and psychiatric topics; and reviews system issues involved in remediation, including policy and leadership challenges and faculty development.
